We went with Blue Wilderness Dive and Snorkel company for the nighttime Manta Ray snorkel experience. It was fantastic and the crew ( April, Colin and Sam) were very nice and helpful. I would recommend them for sure. The only thing I did not like was on their website it advertises snorkelers as (ride along) and it was intimidating because were we worried that we would be the only snorkelers with the rest scuba divers and not be paid any attention by the staff. That was not the case as all of others were snorkelers that night. I would recommend that they change the wording of the website.

The Captain and April were fantastic! Our experience was spectacular! April was knowledgeable regarding the manta rays, she even knew their names. The Captain and April made sure we were comfortable. April gave us some tips on local places to visit. My husband and I had a wonderful experience and it will be one of our most memorable. Blue Wilderness, hands down is who peeps should book their manta ray experience.
Also, Blue Wilderness doesn't overbook which allows the experience to be personal able.

AMAZING EXPERIENCE! We did several dives with dive master Flipper and boat captain Collin. Also did the manga dive with Sam. We can’t say enough positive things about this dive operation. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

We did the Two Tank Morning Dives on two days.
The crew was very friendly and decided on the dive sites depending on the conditions.
Putting on the diving equipment in the water was a new experience, as there is limited space on the boat. But it worked very well and the guides were always helpful.
Our DM Flipper looked after us and did a great job.
A refreshment after diving in the shop is also recommended. The freshly made sandwiches, hot panini and pizza were good.

My husband and I went on a night Manta Ray tour and our tour guide April was so welcoming and kind and eased my scared nerves. Captain Colin and diver Fantastic Sam were amazing as well. We saw 4 Manta Rays and they all had names gahhhhh it was the best experience we’ve had together, highly recommend.

We loved our night manta ray experience with Blue Wilderness. It was very close to the Westin where we were staying and run so efficiently. The crew was knowledgeable and very focused on safety and explained exactly what we had to do before entering the water. Once in the water, we waited a few minutes before beautiful manga rays swam right up to us and started doing flips and turns right under us. My kids said it was their favorite experience of the trip and I am so happy we used blue wilderness.

Have 12 and 15yr old, did their intro to scuba diving and a refresher course for me, one hour at the pool and then a two tank dive at two different sites at the ocean ( trigger fish, parrot fish, turtles). We loved it and Dive Master April is stellar. Made it look so easy and so much fun for the kids and I. Flipper's manta jokes, Chandler's easy going nature and the captains' and crew's knowledge were all so much appreciated! Night dive with the 12-16' coastal mantas (Jolene and Kamala) made this trip magical. Communing with nature, sunset boat trip, majestic wildlife, stargazing and comets on the trip back. Must do when at the Big Island!

FANTASTIC scuba instructor and boat captain! Flipper and Colin were the best and we even signed up for a 3rd dive based on their recommendations. We initially did the 2 tank morning dive - it was great! Easy to get there and the communication process beforehand was smooth. The next day we signed up for the Manta Ray dive - WOWZA - so glad we did that! The team is exceptional and so were the dives. They kept us out of the crowds, so it felt really special and individualized. Would highly recommend Blue Wilderness.

Blue Wilderness is among our favorite Big Island dive outfits. Their boat—a rigid inflatable sans-head—is not as plush as some of the others, but it's fast and fun. It's a very quick ride to many of the best Kohala dive sites. Rather than donning gear on the boat, divers put their BCs on in the water and take them off in the water prior to re-entering the boat. This eliminates the need to stagger around the boat deck in full gear, and makes climbing the ladder back into the boat much easier. The hard-working crew place your gear in the water for you and pull it back into the boat after the dive.
Crew—in this case captain Steve and divemaster April—were friendly, fun, and very competent. They took us to two great sites, where we enjoyed viewing a turtle cleaning station, snoozing white-tip reef sharks, a spotted eagle ray, and lots and lots of fish. Highly recommended!

Do the snorkelers wear swim vests? Or hang onto a float or something? And do the snorkelers end up doing a lot of waiting around for the divers? Thanks!

The snorkelers wear wet suits. They hold onto a float. There is no waiting around for the divers, the snorkeling and diving take place at the same time in the same spot.

I only have a day (or 2 max) to dive the Big Island. I’m coming for a wedding in July 2018. So If I did 3 dives, what would be the Best on offer? I’m Padi Advance.
And what’s the water temp in July?

Manta night dive a must do. I go 2-3 times at night every trip.
Anywhere else they take you will be great for a second.

Interested in the night manta snorkel for beginning of September...I have only snorkeled in the Caribbean and I do tend to be on the colder side. Should I plan on renting a full wetsuit for this?
Also, will the snorkel only provide a good experience for viewing the mantas?

They give you a wetsuit on the tour - mine was only short sleeves and legs but definitely ask if a full one is available.
I did not feel like I missed out at all with the snorkel experience!

Shore diving on the Big island will AWLAYS require a full suit and booties. Even divers familiar with local shore dive spots don this gear. The reef can be sharp in many places and stepping on urchins can ruin a dive for sure . In the PADI Training manual one of the factors to consider is " Local Conditions ". Protect yourself and stay warm at the same time.

Almost the same question as above, but we are coming to the Big Island the end of June and will be doing some shore diving. Would you recommend a 3mm shorty or a full 3mm wetsuit. We plan on doing two morning dive per day. We typically do not get cold, but our past diving experience is in Florida and the Caribbean. Thanks for your help!

Yes it really depends on the person. In June it is pretty warm so shorties should be fine if you don't usually get cold and if you do get cold then full would be better.

Noticed from the pictures that they were using shorties. Have never dived in the pacific and had been told I would need a full wet suit.
I dive in the Caribean with either no suit or a shortie. Do I need a full suit there (planning October)

Aloha, Most people dive with a full suit year round in Hawaii. A few people will dive in a shortie in the summer months. For October I would definitely recommend a full wetsuit either 3mm or 5mm. In our rental locker we use a full suit which is a mix of both 5mm and 3mm.
