‪Listen to your trail app when it tells you that this one is “DIFFICULT”. I’m pretty able-bodied but unfortunately mildly asthmatic. The first half mile was challenging but worth it, as the views were spectacular. It is steeply downhill, sometimes narrow, and very uneven with steep drops, but manageable if you’re used to hiking. Unfortunately I pushed myself to a full mile down the trail, and the return journey almost killed me. We were stupid and didn’t bring enough water. Come prepared, and know that it IS difficult and you will be forced to go back uphill, so know your limits.‬

‪I parked my rental car on the side of the road, near marker 8.
Started the hike at 7:00 am to avoid hiking back up with the stronger sunshine around 11:00 am
The trail is well marked and I also follow the footprints on the soil over the impressive open area.
Above me, I heard the sound of wild goats, and saw helicopters.
I made it to the river filled with huge rocks.
It was worth getting up early in the morning to start the hike at 7:00 am and
returning to my car at 11:00 am with a sense of accomplishment and hungry for lunch.‬

‪This trail is a serious adventure and not for the average hiker. You need to be in GOOD physical condition and I would only recommend this for an experienced hiker. If I was rating the trail, I would say this is an advanced to expert trail based on the climb out alone.

The trail is 6 miles round trip.‬

‪Took this trail almost to the bottom. It was challenging and rewarding. You are in sun a lot and the are bugs so sunscreen and bug spray a good idea. Need great shoes for the rock climbing.

Highly recommended.‬

‪After camping overnight at Wiliwili we arrived back at our vehicle the following day to discover it had been broken into and we had several hundred dollars worth of our stuff stolen. Typically we would never leave anything of value in our vehicles, but there was no way we would have been able to pack everything into our already 25+ lb bags. The hike itself was beautiful. Very challenging coming back up with the added weight of our camping gear. Also - bring bug spray!! I would definitely recommend this hike, but PLEASE use caution and don't leave anything in your car!!!‬

‪My family wanted to do this, so not wanting to be a party pooper, we went. We started out and I thought “i’ve Got this”. We got about half way and I knew I had made a mistake. So while the rest of the family went the rest of the way my husband and I decided to turn around and go back. Well let me tell you, it’s uphill. I thought I might die, for real. I kept thinking if life flight had to come, there was no way for them to rescue me. After many many stops to try to breathe and pray, and add a few cuss words, we made it. I was never so glad to get to a parking lot in my life. It was HELL!‬

Also je fester das Schuhwerk umso besser. ‬

‪We had planned to hike down and camp at the first site (Williwilli) for two nights. We actually wanted to stay at Hipilau (last site) but it said it was booked full online (thank god!). So we had all our gear with us (I'd say my pack was 30+lbs). Me and my partner are both 30 yr old athletic (but heavy) individuals. The way down was fun. We were running down the straight stretches with our packs on , no problem. It probably took us 1.5 hours with stops for views...which were absolutely amazing. We set up camp at WIlliwilli. All the sites have a covered area with a few supplies, outhouse and fire pit. There was a cleared path by the river and this is where we set up our tent. Each camp site only has one of these though. So I'm not sure if they only allow one booking per site? We were the only people camping the first night and the second night we had another group close by. We had a great time--waking up and taking a dip in the river and having the area to ourselves was fantastic. The second day we wanted to continue the Kukui trail to the other two campsites so set off early before the day hikers came down the canyon past our site to the river. We ventured off. To note: to continue to the other sites requires some river wading and slippery rocks. If you have water shoes, you should be okay but we didn't and had a lot of close calls slipping off rocks and tests of stability. I believe you cross the river 4-5 times to get to the last site. The views on the trail past the Williwilli site are nothing special and the trail is pretty crappy. Meaning, there is 6 foot grasses mixed in with 6 foot burr bushes on a maybe foot wide slippery ledge with hidden rocks to try trip you on. And you don't realize you're right on a ledge because the grasses are high and thick --so be careful! Kudos to those who have camped at the 2nd and 3rd sites as it would be way more difficult with a pack. We legit had a head full of burrs and they were literally on every part of our bodies. Like I said, there are no great views to make this worthwhile as you're in bushes literally for a lot of the hike. We got to the end and decided to follow the river back to Willliwilli to avoid the ledges and burrs--don't do this. It was around 330 when we started the trek back. The river is impassable at some points so we were doing a lot of questionable hops. The sun started going down so we decided to find the path again and dealt with the burrs as the river took so long with taking shoes on and off to rock hop. Finally got back with enough time to get a fire going and go for a dip. I would not recommend going to the furthest site unless you are staying there! HOWEVER, we found tons of Lilokoi on the trail. If you haven't had this fruit you must--soooo good. We were there the 2 nights before the full moon and night views of the river were amazing. You hear wild hogs everywhere, especially at night. There were footprints about 50 feet away from our site by the river. It was almost like cricket chirping. Our last day we packed up and left around 11 AM and got back to our vehicle around 1. It was the most brutal hike I've ever done. I hike in BC mountains often. Carrying an extra 30lbs up the canyon was almost unbearable. If we didn't have a Napali Coast tour booked at 130 pm that day I probably would have given up. I have never been so sore. I was lucky that the sun only was out for about a quarter of the hike and there was lots of cloud cover, however, I still needed so many breaks. I was so happy to see the car when we got up. On that note, we had it parked on the edge of the road and had no problem with break ins. SO, in conclusion: the canyon is beautiful and I would heavily recommend BUT if you are camping, pack light and don't bring extra stuff (we had alcohol, speaker and little things to make it the best experience), look for lilokoi and pack a hat and lots of water! Even though it was a brutal 2 hours up I would do it again, just a little different!‬
