‪A Nice Visit in October

It had been several years, since I had visited the Museum of African Diaspora, located just off of the lobby of the St Regis Hotel - even when we had stayed at the St Regis. In October, I walked down to Mission St, just for another visit.

The MoAD is small, but well laid out, with great signage and lighting, and though its space is limited, it manages to fit a lot of material, within its walls.

The artwork, and art objects are beautifully displayed, and maintain a continuing theme. On this visit, there were no special exhibits, as I had encountered before, and no performances, though notices of several were displayed.

In all, I spent about an hour, which is what I would budget, time-wise, for a visit - unless there is a program, at that time.‬

‪I was enticed to visit MOAD yesterday, because I had read that admission was going to be free in honor of MLK Day. It turned out to also be a family day, which was very nice because some of the activities and performances were geared toward (family art activity, kids' scavenger hunt, sidewalk chalk art, Prescott Circus) or at least fun for children. The two performances, a local dance company and jazz workshop, had children/youth as performers. They were both quite good, reflecting the dedication of their mentors and the hard work of the young people. The place was crowded with children and adults of many ethnicities. The four exhibitions were interesting, and worth a stop even if it weren't free. (Admission is quite reasonable, especially for seniors and students; children under 12 are always free.) I'd especially recommend this special day, particularly for African-American families, but its an interesting visit for anyone on any day.‬

‪A small amount of time to kill before the trip to the airport. This was close by so we did a quick visit. Very well displayed exhibits and art and the short time we had did not do it justice. Would have been great to have had more time. An enjoyable couple of hours‬

‪A small museum but packed with such interesting and diverse displays. Paintings, sculptures, exhibits and displays that make you think and consider. Lovely staff who were very helpful and well read.‬

‪I've been a few times. The MOAD is a smaller art museum with changing exhibits that takes on unexpected dimensions of African Diaspora art from ever-changing traditions like Carnival to a speculative Afrofuturist classroom installation by Oakland-based Nyame Brown. The staff were friendly and helpful and the low admissions price and easy access from BART makes it an attractive option when you don't have the time or patience for the big museums.‬

‪Visited MOAD for the first time over the weekend, and I'm sorry I didn't get there sooner.

The museum has a Afro-centric theme, But I, a non-African, found it very interesting, and a lot of fun. The exhibits are on three floors, and each has its own delights. Exhibits at this time include an Augmented Reality presentation, a couple of interesting art videos, a photo exhibit about fashion in South Africa. and several more presentations.

The museum is very well laid out, and I found the exhibits well curated -- interesting, and juxtoposed in a way that easily and naturally led me from one artist to the next.

MOAD is very easy to get to and is in a cluster - SFMOMA, MOAD and the Jewish Museum - that can give you a full day of culture with only a couple of blocks of walking in the Third and Mission nexus.‬

‪The staff were excellent and the exhibits themselves too, but the venue is too small. There must be more to present on this subject. So a bigger venue and more exhibits are needed. Free entrance on Saturdays by the way. ‬

‪I LOVED this museum. I can not understand the negative reviews left on here at all. Whilst it is not big I managed to spend over two hours in here - they had a exhibition on the carnival tradition which was really insightful, innovative and interesting. There was one exhibit for example that had people talking like they were musical instruments - hard to describe but one of the most beautiful audio-visual displays I have ever seen in an arts/museum setting. This place is around the corner from the MLK exhibit so you can see both in one stone if you're looking to get a SF black history hit in one go. Again do not understand the negative reviews so can only assume that those leaving negative remarks do not have a direct link with the African diaspora and thus have a limited understanding into the relevance and importance of museums like this.‬

‪Like others have mentioned, this is an art gallery rather than a museum. We went expecting to learn about the African diaspora but it only had a few contemporary art installations. I don't like writing a negative review of this nonprofit enterprise but potential customers have the right to know what they will and won't see for their admission fee.‬
