They have free Fridays, which are fun and sometimes with music and drinks. There are other late night events which can be really good. The Alvin Ailey was one of the best exhibits i have seen them do in the last 5 years. Certainly worth it. They keep a good active energy at this museum.

On Fridays admission is free from 5pm - please note that a limited contingent will be activated about a week before.
Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney founded the museum in 1931 with about 700 works of art from her own property. American art of the 20th and 21st centuries is on display. The panoramic view from the roof terrace was magnificent – a nice conclusion for us in N.Y.

An excellent experience. The Alvin Ailey exhibition was particularly superb. Plus the day was gorgeous (cool but sunny) and the views from the rooftop terrace breathtaking.

The current exhibit on Alvin Ailey is amazing. Provides historical, social and artistic context, demonstrating connections between Ailey and other dancers, musicians, and visual artists. I love the videos across the top of the room allowing everyone to see without standing in line or waiting your turn. Volume could have been a little softer, since there were also audio stations for people to listen to other A/V with headphones provided, but the headphones didn't block out the ambient sounds.
But really, so beautiful.
Also enjoyed the other floors, but this was really the highlight.
The roof top cafe was fun, with great views, and food priced similar to a lot of places in NYC.

Great museum, if you like Edward Hopper this is the place to go. The architecture location are beautiful also, right at the end of High Line. I just felt they could give more space to the permanent collection and not just one floor.

Those interested in Hopper, O’Keefe or Basquiat are in the right place. On top is the great architecture and the view from one of the numerous roof terraces.
One of the few museums in New York that can be captured with a visit ;)

Museums in NYC are particularly expensive. I'm not sure the cause of this, but take a look if you don't believe me: from the smallest to the biggest, you will be paying anywhere between 15$ - 40$ USD on any given day. As a Canadian that means biting the metaphorical exchange-rate-bullet every time.
The Whitney, as of this posting, cost us 30.00$ USD each, which translates to a little over 40.00$ CAD. This is incredibly steep in our experience, but we really wanted to visit this world-class museum at least once.
I will say that what the Whitney may lack in quantity of renowned artworks on display, it makes up for in views. You can get wonderful views of Manhattan from terraces on the 7th and 5th floors. Additionally there's a cafe on the 8th with a killer view too. If it hadn't been for the views, this might have been a very different type of review.
My favourite floor was the 5th; artwork by a collection of American artists from the 20th century. George Bellows, Edward Hopper, Charles Burchfield, and Malcolm Bailey, to name a few. I could have spent a lot of time here.
Ultimately I believe the price tag is too high given what you get, but I think if you also have a deep interest in more experimental styles of American art, or a particular affinity for whatever special exhibition they may have on at the time, then this museum could be worth it for you. After all, art is subjective.

This is a relatively small museum but offers an interesting blend of artist installations. Our walk through only took about two hours and we finished our tour with a coffee on the rooftop patio to enjoy the views of the city and river.

Having heard so much about The Whitney and as a lover of American art, I decided to give it a try. The building itself is very large and spacious, with plenty of room (the opposite of MOMA). But the collection itself left a lot to be desired; a few artists I knew and most I didn’t. Good exhibit on Alvin Ailey, but he’s known more for dance. And even thought it’s American anrt, I saw nothing before about 1890. All in all, not worth $30.

Beautiful architectural structure of this museum and equally beautiful works contained inside and on the panoramic terraces.

Every type you can imagine. They have a nice bistro just inside of the restaurant, and although not cheap, it was a great place for drinks while waiting for friends. I'd recommend Buddhakan or Gansevoort Market, depending on budget and inclination.

Hello, my daughter is interested in visiting the Terrace of the museum building, does she need the admission ticket to do so? Tks

How early does one have to arrive to gain entrance in a reasonable amount of time for the Friday "Pay What You Wish" evenings?
كُتب بتاريخ 6 مارس 2018
Normally, the admission is:
Adults
$25
Seniors/Students
$18
18 and Under
Free
Membership costs $90, so you have to decide how often you would go, and you could then go any time and not have to fight the crowds on Friday. I personally would not pay less than $20 as an adult or $15 as a senior. It is an excellent museum in a good neighborhood, so you could go down to the Hudson while there. The museum cafe was reasonable and pleasant. The museum is definitely worth a visit, and to be honest, I made my first visit only recently and joined, despite the fact that I've been in the city since 1972!

Hi Susan - boy are you in for a treat. Not only is the museum fabulous, but it is in the middle of the Meatpacking district, which is filled with good and fun places to eat. It all depends on what you're looking for and whether it's lunch or dinner. My husband and I loved the Gansevoort Market for lunch and really enjoyed Fig and Olive for dinner. I would suggest you take a look at Zagat's "best restaurants near the Whitney" page (apparently we're not allowed to post URLS in our answers) and then review the menus of the places that look good to you.
And don't miss walking the full length of the High Line - one of my favorite places in New York!
