This was formally the Henry Miller theatre built in 1917. It went under an extensive renovation in 2019 and they did an awesome job. The end result was the feeling of keeping history of the theater with a very careful and determined update. They did an awesome job. Throughout the common space, they have artifacts on display from the old theater.
Nearly all of the seating have great views of the stage.

Came here to see & Juliet. The bar does sell candy & snacks, but they are not allowed in the theatre. Drinks from the bar are allowed inside. Average sized seats, not wide but not as narrow as others.

Stephen Sondheim Theatre -- designated Broadway theatre -- is located in the Theatre District on Times Square. The theatre has been in entertainment business over a hundred years.
Opened as Henry Miller's Theatre in 1918, it has gone through several restorations and renovations, its original facade was designated as New York City Landmark in 1987. The Theatre was renamed for Stephen Sondheim -- an American composer and lyricist, in 2010.
The current seating capacity of the theatre auditorium is 1,055.
I was lucky to get a ticket for a new, ultra hip musical "& Juliet"; the seat was in the middle of Row J in the orchestra section, providing the perfect view of the stage. The show was sold out.
"& Juliet" is the highest quality musical, excellently scripted and superbly staged, choreographed and performed by a cast of very talented actors. The idea of "bringing" Shakespeare to modern times was quite bold and contemporary, especially with its strong message of gender nonconformity and feminism. The show was masterfully performed, leaving the audience in awe and admiration of the whole production.
The dancing and vocal numbers, excellently performed by the cast and ensemble were very strong and memorable. Thirty two songs by Max Martin from the 90s and 00s were presented on a high professional level, with some striking visual effects and properly projected acoustics; the artists costumes were stunning.
The main characters, exceptionally played by Lorna Courtney (Juliet), Betsy Wolfe (Anne), Stark Sands (Shakespeare), Justin David Sullivan (May), the ensemble dancing talent Bobby "Pocket" Horner (Rumour) -- and actually, all the actors made the show a total success. The musical was fun to watch and the pleasure to enjoy and remember the standout performances!
When I am in New York City again, I plan to see "& Juliet" again at Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Thank You for the Art!

The Stephen Sondheim Theatre is a wonderful performance arts venue, located in the Theatre District of Midtown Manhattan, New York.
The theater was established by Henry Miller, an actor and producer in 1918 and named after American composer, Stephen Sondheim.
The Stephen Sondheim Theatre has featured numerous and world renowned theatrical performances, ranging from Pee-Wee Hermann & Ms. Doubtfire.
When celebrating my wife’s Happy Birthday in September of 2018, I brought and treated her and myself to view the broadway hit, Beautiful: The Carol King Musical at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
We both found Beautiful: The Carol King Musical to be thoroughly entertaining and we definitely enjoyed the viewing of the show and the comfort of our seats.
The Theater’s staff were also very welcoming and courteous and did a great job on helping us to locate our seats in a timely fashion.
Should you attend a show at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, you’ll definitely fall in love with this venue and have a great time!!!

This is a lovely older theatre named for an acclaimed Broadway veteran who just turned 90. Right now there is nothing at it because in the next few weeks Mrs. Doubtfire will open here. The orchestra is actually downstairs. Like so many theaters the seats are small so be prepared.

Saw Slavas snow show was a great show . The theatre is quaint and very nice . The staff was disappointing when asking them for help. They were more concerned about going to Starbucks afterward then the current situation.

This review is not for this show but the theater and its management. Despite the appearance of a lobby at street level the actual theater is subterranean for example the orchestral is 3 deep levels below the entrance. A M.C. Escher-esque series of staircases and a large freight elevator are the only way to your seat and hopefully in case of an emergency would function as a safe and viable escape.
Warning! Unlike Broadway theaters of the past, if you step out during intermission you will be asked by the 21 year old "security officers" to prove you have a ticket to be there and they may asked you to tell them the seat number to prove so. Even when you show them your ticket they might accuse you of having found it on the sidewalk and prevent you from entering the theater. This happened to me and I asked to speak to the theater manager. I was told the usual excuses (security.....) although nobody checks for security beside looking in to handbags pre-show, I was carrying nothing I demanded an apology but of course was given a standard "corporate lawyer speak" we are sorry you "feel" that way while admiring to doing nothing wrong. If my companion had not spotted me and could vouch for my presence I would have missed the second half of the show. If you want to see a show in what may be consider a pit please buy tickets for this or whatever show will follow it. Memorize your seat number, and keep a friend inside to prove you belong there.

Not a bad seat in the house. Play was great. Snacks sold there are over the top expensive. $5.for a small box of Junior mints. Lobby is small and seats are a little tight-no leg room. Other than that the theatre is clean, view of stage a acoustics were good.

We saw the show about Carol King and her life - it was fabulous, but the theater is self is really amazing. If you get to see a play here, do it!

The answer given above is my thoughts as well. Any seats in the center part of theater gives you a good view. I also prefer the front few rows of the 1st mezzanine. Enjoy!!

Have an opportunity to get front row seats--wondering if it is worth it? Or better off back from the stage a little?

Front row not necessary and would not even consider unless you are center; you will probably be looking up. If you are to the side, you want to be further back to have a better perspective of the stage; a better angle if you will. Suggest somewhere around row L a few seats off the center aisles works just fine. If you are in the center section any seat works.

locally we ate and reviewed Bobby Vans Grill and Hard Rock Cafe both good for the type of food they serve and close. The location of the theatre means you have an abundance of restaurant choices, enjoy.
