My wife and I visited a number of Arizona's great national parks and monuments in November 2024 and none impressed us as much as Chiricahua National Monument. It is primarily visited for its fantastic pinnacle rock formations, but it is also a 'sky island'. one of the most unique ecosystems in the world with elements of the Rocky Mountains, the SierraMadres and both the Sonora and Chihuahua deserts. On top of that is was the final hideout for legendary Apache warriors Cochise and Geronimo. You can get a lot out of a one day visit by taking the paved road to Massai Point and doing some hiking from there. Trust me, you will not get tired of the photos you can take in this place. Definitely a bucket list destination in Arizona.

What a really cool place! The Visitor's Center has a small museum along with a short movie about the site in addition to the gift shop. It is easy to navigate the driving route with stopping points to take in several highlights. We didn't get to do the hikes, but I am sure those views are just as breathtaking.

This is truly one of the most unusual and spectacular places I've been in all my travels. Thousands of giant rock formations and hoodoos everywhere. And you can see most of it in one day. The scenic drive from the visitor center to Massai Point is marvelous, and pullouts along the way are great. The views from Massai Point are amazing, but I would definitely suggest walking the short Massai nature trail that circles the area...great views in all directions and must-see exhibits in the little hut. I also highly recommend hiking down into the rock formations on one of the many trails. They are all very well marked and allow you to meet the rock formations up close and personal. We hiked the Big Loop, which allowed us to see pretty much everything. Definitely a top ten hike all time! It was a bit strenuous for a guy my age (63), as it covered about 10 miles with considerable elevation gain and loss, but well worth it. It's also the only way to see Heart of Rocks and Big Balanced Rock. If you want a shorter hike, I recommend the Echo Canyon Loop (counterclockwise), which is only about 3 miles and goes through some mind-blowing formations.
One more thing...the 40-mile drive from Willcox to the park is also quite scenic.

We were short in time, so we followed a ranger advice to drive by car and stop at a few lookouts. At the end of the road at Maasai Point we took a short trail (about a mile). Very nice views, beautiful nature.
We may return back to explore this are more.

This National Monument has multiple beautiful hiking trails with gorgeous views. There are a few places you can see from the car but the beauty of the park is really in the trails as you walk among the rocks. The best views are on the moderate to strenuous walks so plan accordingly to enjoy this site.

Absolutely amazing rock formations! We've visited before, but always wanted to return to do more hiking among the rocks, to walk where Geronimo & Cochise walked, so we did. This place really has to be seen to be believed. WELL worth a visit. There is a small gift shop, but that's about it, so take a picnic/etc with you.

We saw a deer and some beautiful birds that we found out were Mexican Jays before we arrived at the visitor center. The two employees were fantastic. They said there is a resident coati that hangs around that area. Unfortunately we didn't see it. We didn't give ourselves enough time to see everything but we did the trail at Massai Point. We bumped into other hikers who said they had been lost for awhile. We also ended up getting confused on a section but were close to the parking area.
The view from Massai Point was spectacular. It was also wonderful to be in such a beautiful area and basically have it all to yourself. We only saw four other vehicles.

You can why since 2022 some people in government have been trying to get Chiricahau National monument changed to a full national park. In my opinion it deserves to be. It gets better the further you drive into it on the 8 miles scenic drive. The gorgeous hoodoos, cliff faces and balancing rocks are majestic. This was all caused by a huge volcanic eruption 25 millions years ago. We saw only 2 other cars the whole time we were there as June is a very quiet to visit due to the heat. The visitor centre was great and all the staff friendly. Its well worth the drive to get here and it should demand your attention.

A ridiculously long drive to see nothing but stacks of rocks baking in the extreme heat. Trails were also nothing but rocks and obviously built by giants. Save your time and you legs. Don't go.

All I can say is wow! I know a lot of Arizona is beautiful but this is something special.
We planned to just drive it and look over Massai point but once we got to the visitors centre and saw how beautiful the place was we changed our mind and did one of the hikes.
We chose Echo Canyon it’s only 3.5 miles but is a decent hike.
The views are fab! Check out a few our the pics.
I can’t believe this isn’t a National Park!

are there campgrounds in Chiricahua national monument?
كُتب بتاريخ 10 نوفمبر 2023
Yes. Bonita Campground is there and reservations are needed. If you go on the Chiricahua National Monument site there is a link to Bonita Canyon campground. Reservations are needed. There are also campgrounds outside near Willcox.
Great hiking within the park and can also see wonderful vistas just driving through the park.
Check the weather as well.
Have a wonderful time!

Is there campgrounds here? Is there any hookups?
كُتب بتاريخ 2 فبراير 2020
Yes, there is great campground there and I spent 3 enjoyable months being a volunteer campground host there. No hook ups but a warm heated bathroom. Sites are not large and there is a 29 foot limit on RV's. Best sites if they are not reserved are 11, 6, 18, 20 and. Have fun!

Planing on coming in mid January and will be staying in Wilcox. How many days should we plan to stay? Looking at two days in Wilcox and a day trip to Tombstone and a couple of nights in Tucson. Thoughts?
كُتب بتاريخ 28 ديسمبر 2019
I would make a point of going to Kartchner Caverns. - between Tombstone and Tucson. You pretty much need a whole day to see Chiricahua. I would choose Karchner Caverns over Chiricahua NM. I have done both.

Where did you stay overnight to hike a couple of days in Chiricahua National Park?

We were in a trailer and stayed at a KOA in Wilcox/Cochise

Are there ways to observe the rocks without going on the roads with treacherous drop offs?
كُتب بتاريخ 22 فبراير 2019
There are no scary drop offs like you find in Colorado on some of those high-elevation roads. The road is only 6 to 9 miles long, it is paved and two lanes. There are spacious parking lots at to Lookout areas. I would encourage you to go because it's not like driving on the side of a mountain when you have switchbacks. Enjoy the Rocks they are like none you've ever seen.

We are looking to visit Chiricahua National Monument in Mid April . We are assuming it will be open by then. We are wondering if the balanced rocks are viewable from the road as we cannot do trails.
كُتب بتاريخ 15 يناير 2019
There is a nice road that takes you through the park & yes you can see some of the balanced rocks & spirl rocks - there are small pull offs - the visitor center is very nice & the rangers are helpful to guide you to what your able to do while visiting. The road takes you to the top where there is lots to see & a building at the parking lot that has historical info inside - make sure to check out - National parks website for this National Monument on your drive out you pass Fort Bowie which is a small side trip - we didn’t have time to stop Bec it was already late afternoon & we had already been to the Titan Missle Museum, but wished we had. Look for both parks on the NPS Arizona website. (I tried to attach links but this site wouldn’t let me Btw there are picnic tables at the top to enjoy the views - hope you enjoy!!! It’s beautiful! Thanks for reaching out - I love sharing adventures with others! You will be so glad you went!

Has anyone tried to drive into the park since the government shutdown? Are there barricades or gates?
كُتب بتاريخ 9 يناير 2019
From memory they have gates to the park so would guess it will be closed, we visited the USA in 2013 during that closedown and could not get into national parks, luckily this year we visited many on our 3 month trip to USA and Canada
كُتب بتاريخ 10 يناير 2019
can you still drive through the park? I know the government shut down has affected a lot of the parks. I don't care about the visitor center or restrooms, just want to catch a hike while i am out that way
كُتب بتاريخ 3 يناير 2019
I heard that Grand Canyon is still open despite the shutdown. Chiricahua should be open too, on the same criteria
كُتب بتاريخ 3 يناير 2019
Are the roads open during the government shutdown?
كُتب بتاريخ 3 يناير 2019
It’s a long drive out - I’d wait until the shut down ends to visit.
كُتب بتاريخ 16 يناير 2019
How is it visiting on January? Snow?
