‪Not sure if it's always so busy or just because it was a gorgeous late fall weekend and everyone wanted to take advantage. The trails are fun! Sounds like changes are being made to the dispersed camping to make it less of a free-for-all and more structured. I'm hoping they add more vault toilets since there were two at the main parking lot that served all the day bikers as well as probably 40+ parties "dispersed" camping across the road.
Tons of trail systems in the area so it's all about the experience. This one provides easy access to trails that are good for all abilities. Our party had beginner through expert and kids that like to bike on their own.‬

‪We drove around the area to check out the boon docking opportunities. Lots of wide open space and a few RV's. Ruts in the entrance road but that is to be expected on BLM land. Looking forward to camping there in the near future. ‬

‪Only a few technical sections. Most of the climbs are moderate. A few areas on some trails are not for the faint of heart as there is chance to slide off and down a steep hill or over a short cliff. Joe's Ridge rides along the crest of a ridge and Zip-pity Do Da also has a ridge and a steep decent. Everyone raves about PBR. I found Mojo to be more enjoyable, but unfortunately short. The BLM road is not great, especially near the entrance, for the drive to parking, but there is a large parking area with vault toilets. Also ample area to camp if you desire.‬

‪The trails at the North Fruita Desert, (aka 18 road) are pretty fun for most cyclists. Even the easier trails provide a rather high fun factor. That said, the other major networks in the area (Kokopelli, Lunch Loops) offer more variety, and much more in the way of entertainment and challenge for advanced riders.‬

‪This area has a little for (almost) everyone. A designated shooting area is right by the road. There is an area set aside for motorized activity, often dirt bikes and ATVs can be seen zooming around the Bentonite hills. There is both a campground and an area for dispersed camping. The campground has many juniper trees, offering some shade and places to hang hammocks. The dispersed camping areas offer...space. Not much in the way of shade, and when it's windy (often) it WILL be dusty. Also, this entire area boasts 100% expansive soil. So, if it rains, you aren't going anywhere. You can't drive, ride or even walk. Fortunately it IS the desert, so it doesn't rain very much. Or very often. But even if you have mud tires, you won't be driving off the road (very far). There are many miles of dirt roads and bike trails here, and mountain biking is the predominant activity. Note that when 18 Road turns to dirt, the first few miles are pretty rough. The road actually improves considerably after a couple of miles, so be patient.‬

‪not being real ardent mountain bikers (we can WALK a single-track faster than we can bike) we visit this area when there are few(er) others out there. Not only can an outdoor-exercise enthusiast visit the "actual" BLM-maintained campground, etc. (up 18 Road) -- just about any road towards the Bookcliffs headin' north will result in areas to have a tranquil ride. You don't like tranquil? At the 18-Road ("official" North F. Desert) there are a variety of s-t-s which range from black diamond (in downhill-skiing parlance) to "easy rolling" routes. I enjoy RUNNING the single tracks in this area, whereas my wife sticks to the dirt/gravel roads.‬

‪If you haven't been Mtn Biking at N. Fruita Desert/18 Rd. you need to go. We go at least once a year and camp in the developed area. It has campsites that will work for 2 cars/tents, more if you can get a couple next to each other. Nice fire pits with grills. Vault toilets are a short walk from all campsites and usually clean but not always. The riding there is off the hook!! You can have a casual breakfast then do a couple trails and then swing by your campsite for lunch and a beer before heading out for some more amazing riding. Most all the trails are directional so you have no worries about encountering uphill or downhill traffic. The trails are progressive and there is one for all abilities. The Kessel Run is a great warm up then head over to Pumps, Bumps & Rollers (P.B.R.). Take lunch then hit Joes and Mojo if you are looking for something a bit more technical. You can spend a full weekend out there and not get board. Camping is $10/site. GO!!! remember...The faster you go the smoother it gets!!‬

‪If you're looking for technical trail, head a few miles south to the kokopelli trails (which are excellent as well), but if FAST and FLOWY is what you want, these trails are it. If you want to introduce your kids (or anyone) to mountain biking, these trails will get anybody hooked. It may be cheating a bit but the ability to let my 7yo flow down Kessels Run (so fun) multiple times with easy shuttles to the top let her fall in love with riding without killing her tiny legs climbing was priceless. Add to that the tons of other trail at 18rd, the proximity to Kokopelli, Lunch loops, Rabbit Valley and even Moab (fun, but not like Fruita) just 90 miles away and you're in for all the adventure your family can handle. The beach no longer wins our family vacation vote.‬

‪The Kessel Run is great for beginner mountain bikers. When my kiddos were little, we could even drive them to the beginning of the trail on the campground road and then ride down hill over this fun roly-poly trail.‬
