‪Historic Mansion in Fairmount Park‬

‪Make sure you go upstairs where all the old toys and dolls are located. Such a huge collection of expensive and home-made toys.‬

‪If old homes could talk...this historic home in Fairmount Park could certainly talk of its glory days as a home for the wealthy and privileged of its time.
Beautifully restored and decorated for the holidays, it is worth a visit to not only appreciate the natural surroundings but to also experience the period rooms and learn of the surprising functionality of many of the antique pieces found throughout the home.
If possible, visit the home during the week and perhaps have an opportunity to linger a bit. Unfortunately, due to crowding, we were hurried through rooms and our guide had a tendency to start talking before everyone had caught up.
If you are truly a history buff, I would suggest doing some research on your own before visiting any of the mansions in the park. Although beautiful to see, there is not too much focus on the residents or their stories, so that part of the history is covered very lightly.‬

‪I was on a bus trip and this is one of the houses in Fairmount Park we visited. Our guide was excellent and explained the history of this amazing house. What I really enjoyed was how beautifully it was decorated and all the dolls and toys displayed. The furniture in this house was just as amazing to see.‬

‪We had some extra time while we were visiting in Philadelphia and took a ride out to Fairmont Park. My wife suggested visiting one of the houses where tours are given for a low admission fee of $8 (I think we paid $2 many years ago when we visited another in the park) The tour guide was very informed on all the collections and history of the house. It was nice seeing pictures of the area during the time when the house had been occupied. We enjoyed the 50 minute tour and might some day go back to one of the others scattered throughout the park.‬

‪VIsited this Federal style mansion as part of the FAirmont Park holiday mansion tour. This summer villa of the abolitionist, lawyer and judge William Lewis was beautiful decked out in its holiday finery, The second owner Mr Hemphill added the Greek revival wings. The home features a fine collection of dolls and antique toys.‬

‪My wife and I visited today. I'm into history, but not so much historic houses, so I was expecting to be bored for an hour or so while my wife soaked in the experience. Surprisingly, I found it quite interesting myself. I think this was due in large part to our tour guide, Liz. She was very pleasant and even bubbly, not to mention very knowledgeable of the Mansion despite only being on staff since February. Clearly, she is passionate about sharing her knowledge and has no difficulty sharing that passion.

One hopefully helpful note: bring cash. Upon our arrival, Liz informed us that the Mansion does not take cards.I was a bit befuddled by that, as I am used to business at least having the Square Reader or PayPal reader. It is $8.00 a piece, cash only.

After the tour, we were able to walk the grounds of the backyard, which is pretty and includes a garden. The yard is encircled by a path.‬

‪We visited the mansion today as part of a visit to several historic sites in Fairmount Park. Though not officially connected, there are several mansions in the area that can be toured, and it would make for a nice day visiting several locations, although I don't know that a person could fit all of them in one day. Woodford Mansion is a stone's throw away, so I would definitely recommend doing both in one visit.

Strawberry Mansion runs their tours on the hour, but has a lovely garden outside, so you can wander a little bit if you need to kill some time. Our tour guide today was a costumed Southern gentleman named Tyson. He was so knowledgeable. He pointed out several key pieces and the design of the house and then also gave us the opportunity to ask questions. I was particularly interested to learn about the connection with a women's committee for the 1926 Sesquicentennial Exhibition. Another high point for me was a special upstairs dining room that includes a beautiful painting of Fairmount Park that spans around the walls of the entire room. Apparently, Eleanor Roosevelt was a visitor to this particular spot!

I am looking forward to coming back to the area and visiting the other mansions soon!‬

‪My husband and I love Philly, I suggested we take a tour of the Historic Strawberry Mansion. Not to be confused with the strawberry mansion houses in a not so nice part of town. We took a cab so if you do be very specific, the cab driver tried to drop us off here, and we told them where we wanted to go. the bad part of town stores and houses boarded up out of business, reminded me of the Bronx in the early 80s.
Okay back to the mansion. Nice little house, cab left us near mansion by the music center had to walk in muddy grounds. We finally get there. The tour guides are very nice, we were charged 8.00. I thought reading articles, flyer, website, Facebook etc. Holiday open house meant see the whole house on certain days and times. But not just 4 rooms. The guide was very nice and knowledgeable, and the 4 rooms beautifully decorated for Christmas, each had a different country. We were told we could not see the upstairs. We were not part of a " tour group". We had no problem waiting until tour group was finished, maybe a chance to go upstairs see the rest of the house. Alas we were told no.It was just the 2 of us and another 3 people just finished their tour. I kind of felt ripped off. It would not take anymore time than the tour group.
I have been to small musuems and historical houses in my travels. I also understand monies help keep the house operating. But 8.00 for 4 rooms. If you are going to advertise open house, not just show half a house. After the trouble we had getting there, unless you are a tour group or school class.Good luck‬
