We visited August Laura before grabbing dinner at Za Ya Ramen restaurant (also wonderful). One of the owners was at the bar and I tried the Amaretto Sour which has egg whites in it and it has just the right balance of sweetness and tanginess. My partner had the Coop which she loved.
The owner came out an talked to us for a bit and we learned that her Dad has run a bar in jersey for 40 years (keeping it in the family). This is well worth the trip, just get there early 'cause the place is small.

August Laura is 16 month-old Specialty Cocktail Venue that's a cross between a mini-Speakeasy and that 1940's Rumpus Room you'd find tucked away in your Uncles' Basement.
This dimly lit Cocktail Lounge is not what you'd expect in modern Carroll Gardens.
It has more class & style than one expects from a neighborhood whose newer patrons generally look for expensive drinks to brag over and/or to hyper-critique.
The Drink Menu: Unique choices and classic cocktails with a twist. Each is a must try!
The Well: The 'Well' is not a well. It's all top shelf. The bar is stocked with so many modern-traditional liquors and old-fashioned boozes that ANY cocktail from any generation can be mixed-up for any taste bud. Straight Scotch Drinkers will also be happy with their 2 or 3 high-end single malt choices.
Note: As with any bar, their menu drinks are pricey; but no more so than what the traffic will allow. Non-menu drinks may be less expensive, but we stuck to the menu to try their new & re-invented selections. They were worth every penny.
Décor - A: Dimly lit for atmosphere, but not so dark that you'll wonder what's lurking in the corners. Like any good bar, the mirrored back-bar shows-off their fine selection.
Décor - B: The place is clean. The bar in clean, the back-bar is clean, the mirrors are clean. The seats aren't sticky, the floor isn't sticky, the staff isn't sticky. The bottles and glasses sparkle! And each glass is fussed-over before its used.
Inside Seating : 10-12 stools line the bar, plus there are 6 tables for 2 that can be joined for larger groups. Note: Groups larger than 6 are asked to make a reservation.
Outside Seating: 8-10 small tables just outside the door. A perfect spot to enjoy a cool breeze and table service.
Staff: Polite, Professional, and Proficient. They can mix a drink with style, yet not over dramatize the method as to slow down the process.
The Crowd: 30 something to 50 something was the average on the night we went. Note: We were the 50 something's and were not made uncomfortable by the other patrons, and we were especially welcomed by the staff.
Snacks: Limited but acceptable. They could use a few salty/sweet/moist cake-bites to go along with a few of their citrus leaning specialty drinks.
Music: House Music is perfect for the Cozy Lounge Feel they seem to aim for. PLUS -
On Thursday nights they have live jazz.
August Laura is a great place for couples or friends to pop-in for a cocktail. It's the type of place where you can relax before or after dinner.
