It was such an amazing experience to stroll along Dyker Heights during Christmas time. It feels like being in a magical worlds where all the houses are illuminated and decorated with beautiful lights. Many house owners go extra miles to present the best decoration. It's truly beyond expectation. If you have time while visiting NY around Christmas, I would recommend to experience the tour that will take you to a fairy land.

If you happen to be in New York over the Christmas period, this place is something else, and an absolute must if you are a lover of things that are a bit quirky, a bit over the top, a bit unique. This place is Dyker Heights in Brooklyn, at Christmastime. You should visit; a feast for your eyes awaits you.
What you will see are hundreds of the grand houses in this well-to-do neighbourhood resplendent in their Christmas dress. It’s a plethora of lights, blow-up Santas and snowmen, life-size figurines, tinsel, huge baubles, and more lights - if it’s to do with Christmas, it will be there, decorating the houses in a grand scale. It’s beautiful. It’s ugly. It’s kitsch. It’s over-the-top. It’s almost obscene. Some houses were actually decorated very beautifully and very tastefully. Others were just a vulgar mishmash of Christmas tat. But whatever your personal view, it’s a spectacle to behold. I’ve never seen anything like it before. In street after street the houses create one big Christmas show. One can only imagine what it must be like NOT to decorate your house in this neighbourhood.
It draws in a huge crowd every evening, as soon as the darkness envelops the neighbourhood, to the point that there are police controlling the traffic on the streets where the major show houses are located. There’s coffee carts and food carts for hungry sightseers. You need to give it at least a couple of hours, as the decorated houses are just not in two or three streets that you can walk in 15 minutes. There are scores of streets with houses in Christmas dress. Just wander to your heart’s content. It is certainly safe to do so early in the evening. There were thousands of people out on the evening of our visit.
I believe there are tours offering sightseeing trips. Apart from getting you there and shepherding you around, you’ll see exactly whet the tour guides will allow you to see, if not more. And it’s probably best just not to try to drive down the streets here. The streets were crowded with traffic and cars were invariably driving at a snail’s pace.
We were staying in Downtown Manhattan and took an express bus from Trinity Place (I think it was the BX28 bus); the trip to Dyker Heights took about 40 minutes, and we alighted the bus just where the decorated houses started.
It really is worth a visit. It’s a spectacular Christmas spectacle like no other! The photos I've attached show what it's like. Enjoy!

Visiting New York in December I'd read seeing dyker heights is must do. I booked a tour with get your guide and went with my daughter in her twenties. We met outside the hotel yotel and the bus and hotel were really easy to find. On the bus the tour guide does tell you interesting facts about new york land marks you are passing. Once we got to dyker heights we ended up only actually getting an hour there. Truthfully it wasn't long enough. Although it was really cold there, there are a few vans selling hot drinks so once we walked with a drink we were really enjoying the large houses covered in amazing lights. Some houses were playing music and it felt really festive. Whilst not all the houses are decorated there are plenty are. Our tour felt rushed and we didn't get to see all the houses and enjoy them enough. I would definitely recommend visiting dyker heights but would get the tube, train there or bus and make your own way there to spend enough time to realky enjoy it.

45 mn drive from Manhattan but it's worth it.
About 10 blocks with houses so nicely illuminated.
It's a safe walk, with police controling traffic.
Lot of people, parents and children .
Don't miss it.
With a Uber or a taxi about USD 60 fare,
Taking a tour is not a bad option

We heard about the Dyker Heights lights on the local news while we were visiting New York and decided to drop by. We took public transportation from Manhattan to Dyker Heights and then took our own tour on foot. We used a few suggestions from a few websites that both highlighted the best-decorated houses and mentioned a few details of each of these houses which made this much more than just a sightseeing expedition. Quite a few houses were extremely well done and a few were definitely "over the top"!

Booked a Christmas lights tour to Dyker Heights through Get Your Guide. I had no idea how amazing the experience would be. Enrico was a fantastic guide who was so friendly, gave us information on NYC on the way to Brooklyn (which we appreciated as tourists) and made us feel like we were taken care of throughout. The Christmas lights at Dyker Heights completely exceeded our expectations - the perfect suburban neighborhood where almost all the houses were decorated for Christmas. If you love Christmas time, this is the tour for you!!

Juste magique !

So was muss man gesehen haben.

Can you drive through Dyer Heights to see the lights

Yes however, the blocks are jammed with cars. It would be faster and more enjoyable if walked. Been walking the Dyker lights for 30 years.

Hi Everyone, me partner and I are hoping to go this one evening during our 5 day stay. Is it easy enough to find yourself or best to book onto a guided tour?
Is there any best time to go? Early evening etc? Any suggestions welcome, thank you.

We are thinking about visiting Brooklyn in December and wanted to see the Dyker Heights lights. What's the best way to view them? Are there tours that will drive you there and then you walk around? If so, can you recommend a good company?
