Take the Gatlinburg bypass. It’s an easier mountain ride than some others. There are 2 spots to stop and get out for pictures. It also has the National park sign at the beginning to take a picture by.

Take the Gatlinburg bypass road and stop at the overlooks. It allows you to see town and the majestic mountains of the National Park. We stop almost every trip and take pictures.

Always have to stop here on our way back from the park and get a photo. It's a must-do. Plus the road is less traveled so not a lot of traffic.

Nice view of the surrounding area from a pull-off on the side of the road. The parking is adequate and you can see the town of Gatlinburg.

This location offers a great view out over Gatlinburg and was well kept up and clean. There wasn't any trash out on the ground anywhere.

Great views over the city with just enough parking (in December) to enjoy the views. Very easy on and off from the Bypass.

We took the short ride up the bypass to look back at our resort and it was well worth the trip to see these Smokey blue mountains.

This is one of the most popular spots for taking pictures of the city of Gatlinburg with Mt. Leconte for a backdrop. Views from here are always beautiful but if you want a spectacular view then do what my wife & I did & visit during the fall when the leaves turn to brilliant colors. Located on the Gatlinburg bypass, where there are four parking areas to choose from. There is no admission fee. The Bypass is open 24/7 year round except during inclement weather (snow & ice).

This drive is a by pass instead of driving through town and it was well worth driving this way. The foliage was amazing and very relaxing.

Google Maps says the Scenic Overlook is "permanently closed" - is this really the case? I am not sure if it's temporarily due to COVID or truly permanently closed. We are in the area and would like to visit but don't want to make a special trip there if it's closed.
Thanks!

Try the Little River Trail. See
See hikinginthesmokys web site - littleriver.
A Park Ranger lead us on the trail. We booked it at the main park headquarters near Gatlinburg. The ranger info was fascinating as we learned a lot about the park. The path is very wide (an old road) and it's an easy walk. It parallels a gorgeous stream. Good luck.

We will be in the area mid September. Both are senior citizens. We are not very active. Casual walks are our thing. I would like to know if the walking trails are marked if they are rocky and steep. Thanks for the help.

You can drive to the Gatlinburg Scenic Overlook. There are a lot of places with wonderful views that you can drive to in the park and around the area!

We are planning to be in Gatlinburg the middle of September. Both are senior citizens and not very active. Are the different trails easy for non athletic, but not handicapped seniors. Are they marked? Thanks for the help.

I like the Little River trail which starts at Elkmont campground. This an old road which leads through the abandoned cabins of a former summer encampment and then follows a rushing creek. You can walk as far as you wish, up to several miles, or as little as a few hundred yards and have something interesting to see.
The nature trail at sugarlands is a good choice as is the Mingus Mill walk. The walk around the Oconoluftee pioneer farm at the Oconoluftee Visitors Center is a good choice.

I will be heading to Smoky Mountain area in June with my husband and 2 young daughters. I already posted about accommodations and found answers very very helpful, as we are new to the area. Now I am interested in feedback on recreation. I am trying to avoid burned out areas, which some of course is ok, but I am afraid too much might worry my girls as they wont be able to understand yet exactly what all happened and that it is safe now, etc... Anyhow, my first question is if anyone is familiar with the River Romp tubing company and their river routes. 1. Is it safe enough for a 3 1/2 yr old and 5 1/2 yr old (will have life jackets and be with us of course)? 2. Is the route along the river preserved or burned out? 3. How long does it take to do the 2.5 mi trip on tubes? 4. How long do you wait afterward to be picked up? 5. Is it along a highway or more of a scenic route? We would like to feel in nature, scenic, but also need to be accommodating to little kids, trying to find happy medium. I will also call and ask them directly but would be interested to hear outside feedback as well. Or if you have any other recommendations? Thank you very kindly!

We are not able to answer your questions about the properties that are privately owned. You don't need to be concerned about burned areas. New growth has sprung forth, and the area is beautiful and vibrant.

I would like to know how much of the scenery and forest has been burned out by the autumn forest fires. I understand that not all structures were burned but if we were wanting to go on a hike, to a scenic overlook or most of all rent a cabin, are there still pristine views of the smokies? And if so, where? I am having a lot of difficulty pin pointing this information. I will be travelling with young children and am looking for both outdoor activities, kid friendly attractions and memorable scenery. I will be driving from Illinois so unfortunately anywhere too far past the Sevierville/Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area is too far for us. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Despite the fires, you are coming to the right place! This area is packed full of family-friendly attractions and so much natural beauty. We left the day before the fires swept into town and returned again just three weeks later. Although, many homes and areas and beauty were destroyed, much more was not. We are heading back in a fews. It is still one of my family's favorite places.
If you have small children, consider an afternoon drive up to Clingman's Dome, about 45 minutes from Gatlinburg. Every twist and turn is new, gorgeous scenery and the views from the top are spectacular. There are plenty of places to pull over and take short hikes or a picnic too along the way. The Chimney Tops area might be damaged but there are others; ask at the Sugarlands center. Tourism is the lifeblood of this area, and the people and the mountains are resilient. You will not be disappointed.
Attaching a photo from the Gatlinburg Overlook taken 3 weeks after fire. As you can see, the foreground is blackened but the mountains, forest, and city are still very much there.

Hopefully, no one in this area told you that Hwy 441 up the mountain was closed until April 1st. The road is open 24/7 year 'round except in inclement weather, such as ice and snow. Then it is only closed until they can get the road cleared.

Gatlinburg overlook is along the Gatlinburg bypass. That never closes unless there is inclement weather. Once cleared it opens back up. Not sure who told you it was closed but they gave you false info.
