Dear tfizzle. Thank you for visiting The Kampot Pepper Shop. There are many reasons why Kampot Pepper is expensive. Very little of it is produced - less than 80 tonnes last year, just half a percent of Cambodia's, and only 0.016% of global, annual production. It is extremely high labour to produce to the highest standards, sorted by hand (corn by corn with tweezers!); it is 100% organically grown and we get very low yields; it is the only pepper in the world recognised as exceptional enough to awarded Protected Geographic Indication. There are also reasons why you can sometimes buy "Kampot Pepper" cheaper elsewhere. Some of it is counterfeit, some is mixed with peppercorns from other parts of Cambodia or from Vietnam, but much of what you find in and around Kampot is genuinely from a certified Kampot Peper farm but not sorted to the standards specified in the The Kampot Pepper Promotion Association's "Book of Requirement". (The KPPA is the body that is responsible for setting and monitoring Kampot Pepper production). I.e. they leave the "B" grade in the mix. As you saw, we do not do that but offer it separately as a lower grade product, NOT named "Kampot Pepper". At the Kampot Pepper Shop we are rigorous in following the correct procedures that make Kampot Pepper the best in the world and our prices are similar to other producers that market the highest quality, genuine Kampot Pepper. Indeed we are quite often a little bit cheaper. I am delighted the girls in The Kampot Pepper Shop looked after you well during your and gave you a useful introduction to pepper production. I hope that, despite the price, you did manage to buy a little for yourself and will get to realise how much difference using a good pepper can make to your enjoyment of everything that you eat. We would love to hear how the Kampot pepper Christmas presents went down So please come and visit again, but next time come and visit Bo Tree Farm which now has a fully up and running little visitor centre and cafe serving great pepper infused food. Tours of the plantation are complimentary to anyone who makes the effort to come out there! (Plus there are hammock houses to chill out in and a natural swimming pool to cool off!) Dear Erick, Aly & I thoroughly enjoyed having you at Bo Tree Farm and much appreciate the help you gave us during those 2 weeks at both farm and shop. The cafe at the farm is now fully functioning with Tim, our local chef, producing fabulous pepper-infused lunches to feast on.
