Todays motorbike trip to Bokor was a mixed bag.
The first few hours of the trip were stunning. We saw wild monkeys, gibbons, so many birds, even giant hornbills which were so amazing to see in person.
It is such a shame then, that an area of such intense natural beauty descends so rapidly into one of the most disgraceful displays of greed I have ever seen in real time.
For the next 1-2 hours of our journey we got lost in a mess of concrete, abandoned houses, and empty superhighways, all on top of a once beautiful eco system. It was sad to see such destruction in real life especially having just bore witness to the animals that once lived there.
The building developments were genuinely just weird, it was us, the workers, and the occasional bus load of Chinese tourists who were looking at what? I genuinely do not know. There was an abandoned mega highway presumably for new parts to be pulled in, as well as a few show houses, that themselves looked dilapidated.
I fear the work has gone beyond help and it’s sad to see the collapse of this park. Shame on the corrupt and greedy government that sold out their magnificent nature and wildlife to Chinese investors.
What a crying shame.

Красивый парк с бесплатным въездом. Красивые пейзажи и вид с горы. В парке есть озеро и водопады. Из животных видели только обезьян.

I took a bike up there. What’s good is the perfect road surface, cooler air (take layers in case), various spots where monkeys hang out hoping for food, views above the clouds at the top among delaminated temples / old buildings. What’s bad is the outrageous building of concrete monstrosities up there - ongoing, with large trucks along the way, -the half-built /Chernobyl feel to those monstrosities, the litter that is left everywhere. A car of Chinese visitors stopped to give the monkeys loads of bananas - nice. And as they left, they just chucked the plastic bag out of the window. Unbelievable. As you leave the area you pass under an oversized archway with the ironic words: “Together we preserve our natural and cultural heritages”. (!)

The drive up the mountain was very interesting, the jungle growth was fascinating, the monkeys on the road were cute (especially the many babies) and the road, although winding, was in excellent condition. It has been sealed since the review I read prior to my trip. On the top I preferred the historical, cultural and religious sites more than the new development. The short walk around the waterfall is worth it, but don't continue too far in to the jungle without being aware of the danger of meeting a tiger! Relax at the lake for a picnic. Lunch can be bought at the cafe near the waterfall. The view from the top is awesome.

This place is truly appalling, wholesale and wanton destruction of the environment. How they call it a national park is beyond me, more a testament to corruption, greed and how to destroy the natural environment. The historic building part is strewn with rubbish and zero maintenance the waterfall is top of the lowlights, (2000 riel to enter), although this has clearly been adjusted by human hands to look like this, although this small piece of harmony was ruined by karaoke being played at 1000db at the entrance. Moving onto the building site aspect. Of the actual finished projects I saw, some 100 flats and villas, only 4 were occupied, but hey let's builds thousands more and I mean thousands, theyve cleared the jungle wholesale and built/building massive roads, that look like scars on the landscape. Then you have the massive concrete factory, greenhouses and aircraft hanger sized storage areas They seem to have gone out of their way to be as destructive as possible, let alone consider the environment. The highlight, is the drive up there, lots of monkeys and fauna. However this will soon go the same way, given the convoys of juggernauts going up there, and if they place ever gets fully occupied, the road will never cope and the monkeys will end up roadkill. This place truly sucked at my soul, its heartbreaking.

Bokor is the most beautiful place in Kampot. It a little bit faraway from kampot town about 30 km. It kind of Historical, Heritage and enjoyable.

The tour and the guid was really nice. You can learn more about the history of Cambodia. I recommend this if you are staying a bit around Kampot.

Waste of time we didn’t realize that the old buildings were being converted/renovated. Only 2 old buildings left to see. Don’t waste your time it’s not a national park not they’re destroying it with development.

Hi, I'm interested in Nepenthes Bokorensis, is it easy to find inside the national park ? Or is there a restricted place to find that? Thanks

I'm wondering if Phnom Bokor National Park is suitable for small children (5 and 7 years). There doesn't seem to be much there, only deserted buildings.
And then I saw the reference to big snakes ............ oohhhh!!
How long would it take to get there from Kampot - by car?

Hi, there isn't a great deal to 'do' at Bokor, its mostly the scenery. There are a couple of walks to do, but its mostly the old casino and church to see. The kids will love exploring the old casino. You can walk safely right through the building and onto the top balconies. One of the best things about Bokor is it's about 10-12 degrees cooler up there (a very refreshing change to the constant heat of Cambodia).
Its about an hour drive from Krong Kampot up to Bokor, and its very windy road (just in case the kids get car sick). Also, Bokor is often in the clouds, so best to go on a cloudless day (otherwise there is no view of anything).
Hope this helps. Tim.

Hi, thanks for review; we're biking up tomorrow. Was it relatively colder up there, i.e. should we bring warm jumpers/trousers?

Hi, at the end of November, it was warm too. I think the temperature was quite the same as in Kampot, just humidity was lower, so we felt more comfortable. Regards, Jakub
