When I read the reviews of this temple first, I was hesitant about visiting. I read that there were hordes of touts and hawkers who would pester you before entering the temple. Also, others would demand additional money to enter the complex. Glad to report that I didn't encounter any of this during my visit. Instead, my visit to this temple went smoothly.
The temple is about 70-80 minutes drive from Ubud. The temple is located on the slopes of Bali's tallest mountain - Agung. The mountain provides a stunning backdrop to the temple. Besakih is located at the height of about 1000 mtrs.
As soon as you enter, you will find a huge car parking area, which also has free restrooms. Your entrance ticket covers the entrance to the temple, a sarong to wear while at the temple, and a free shuttle to the main entrance. But there's no shuttle on the way back! The ticket (150000 IDR) also includes a guide, who will accompany you through your visit, explain about the temples within, and also help you take great pics! Of course, you are expected to tip him after though it is not mandatory.
This is the biggest temple in Bali and is dedicated to the 3 main gods - Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiv. Actually, there are over 20 temples within the complex. You are allowed within the temples only if you plan to offer prayers. However, it is well worth walking around the complex. When I visited, there were hardly any people.
I would recommend all to definitely visit this majestic temple.

Visited Besakih temple in early January during rainy season. It was cloudy but not many visitors - so it was nice. It was about a 45 min car ride from Ubud.
Once you pay the entrance fee, you get a local tour guide assigned to you who walks with you and explains the history - and of course - receives a tip at the end of the tour.
You get an one way shuttle up to the temple and get vendors asking you to buy items, but a friendly decline was good enough.
Temple is beautiful and a delight to walk around the area. Many areas are forbidden to visitors though.
Toilets are available for 5000 IDR, but there is also a free one in the parking garage. Food vendors are also available in front of the temple.

Arriving by a new road have been directed into new multi-storey parking lots for motorcycles and cars which in beginning takes away magic.
On arrival the price is $ 150,000 rupees per person including sarun guide and small electric car ride to climb higher which suits us perfectly
To the guide I ask questions and he answers me, but is more interested in taking pictures in the steps with a mirror and insists on taking the photos himself and when I start asking him again about Balinese religion and its places of worship .. he always answers me quickly returning to the photos they want to take from everywhere
At the end of the course I give him $100,000 rupees and look at me saying that it’s not enough for what he took as a photo and ask me another $100,000 rupees to tell him that I was very disappointed with his religion that I thought was one of the only ones that remained pure .. to which he answers me 50,000 rupees more is that okay?
Completely stunned I give him and express my disappointment and turn my back on him and leave
In addition parking is paid in addition to toilets that do not flush $ 5,000 rupees each
I have not felt so much exploited and manipulated in a place of worship... but touristic
So Bali and its people are wonderful but go spend your money elsewhere and there are plenty of other temples in Bali where you will feel at peace after our visit and not disappointed and frustrated by the whole,
Because the place and the view are beautiful. Too bad to have turned it into Disneyworld

It's unfortunate that the most sacred & important temple in Bali has been reduced to a tourist trap, but evidently some actions by poor tourists in the past prompted the Indonesian government to apply new visitation rules rather than close the complex entirely to visitors
You'll be brought to a central area to pay the IDR 150k per person.
You are provided a sarong & assigned a local guide, which is mandatory then board a golf cart shuttle bus.
Yes, upon leaving the shuttle bus you will be swarmed by vendors demanding that you must purchase an offering. This is not necessary & politely decline & keep moving.
Based on previous reviews. I guess it depends on the time of year & the guide you get.
For us, visiting in the morning during the rainy season, it was very quiet. Only a couple other tourists.
Our guide was polite & patient & allowed us to move at our own speed so we were fortunate.
Due to the layout, you are very limited in what you can actually see. Most is around the perimeter of the complex with the majority of the interior closed off.
Plan for about 45 mins.
A commercialized experience but if managed correctly is OK.
Just be aware of what to expect & be polite.

Worth it. Watch out, then everything is fine;)
Admission now costs 150,000 per person. This includes the obligatory sarong (you hand it in afterwards), a guide and the ride on a small train to the entrance.
Our guide spoke great English, explained everything to us well. He didn't force anything on us (he explained briefly that we could pray in the temple, but we already knew that we needed a special costume for this, so no). And that's all the magic: walking around with the guide in peace for an hour, having him explained, asking questions yourself. Our guide has offered us in many places to take photos - has also entered a temple with his mobile phone, photographed a ceremony there for us.
And to all other offers (children sell postcards, photographers want to take special photos, buy offerings you don’t need) just say “no” clearly. Then that's it.
What's right is: You can't get into the temples as a touri, that's reserved for the Balinese. But you get a lot, understand a lot, see a lot.
A beautiful experience! And since he was so nice we tipped our guide. Tip from our driver was: give what feels right for you.

THE WORST ORGANIZED GANG SCAM IN BALI!
I regret not reading the reviews before going because it was a horrible experience.
I, who am already a Hindu, have never seen so much lack of spirituality in a temple:
-The large shopping center/airport style parking on 3 floors is weird from the start
We're being put on a sarong that looks more like a sheet
-We pay a price that is expensive for Bali (150K)
We can't go into temples.
(I have visited many temples in Asia and this is the first time I pay without seeing anything)
-We are imposed a mediocre guide who is useless , who does not speak English , who does not even know how to take a photo but who asks for a tip while he spends his time cursing tourists in Indonesian.
We'll walk around the temple walls in 15 minutes
-We have the right to the cart on the way but not the return because we have to spend our money in the shops
-My driver is not allowed to return
Don’t waste your time in this place because I came out angry with the malevolence that reigns there for a place that is supposed to be sacred.

Besakih Temple is the largest and holiest Hindu shrine in Bali.
To earn a few rupees the first steps of the temple are monopolized by pseudo photographers who dictate the poses to tourists: arms up, yoga pose, head back, velvet look... An obscene spectacle in a sacred place.

It’s a community of the oldest and largest temples in Bali. Combining 25 different temples. We were a bit away from other places, but a 2-hour taxi ride from Ubud. It was a great experience, absolutely a must. Worth the journey

Very large temple that in summer I think welcomes thousands of visitors a day, given the immense underground parking and an entrance to Disneyland.
The most beautiful thing is the grand staircase that leads to the prayer part and that is not open to visitors. Beautiful processions with offerings that are brought by the faithful. Tour around the long but interesting temple

Hi!!! What is the entrance fee for foreigners to this temple? Is it closer to Ubud?
Thanks in advance !!!
كُتب بتاريخ 12 مارس 2019
Sorry for this late reaction.
The entrancefee is not so high, you have to be sure that your legs are coverd for the ladies and man. The distance for Ubud to the temple complex is not so far in miles but it takes time you can go with a taxi you have to agocieed about the price. From Sanur to the Besaki about 500000,00 rupia

With the current activity of the vulcano Agnung, is it still possible to visit Besakih?
كُتب بتاريخ 26 نوفمبر 2017
is the Temple still closed due to Agung Volcano acitvity?
كُتب بتاريخ 29 أكتوبر 2017
Government still set 6-7.5 danger radius from Mount Agung including Besakih...but the danger status has been lowered...
كُتب بتاريخ 30 أكتوبر 2017
Hi,
I was told Besakih is closed to tourists because of the volcano activity or land erosions, is that true?
كُتب بتاريخ 8 أكتوبر 2017
As far as I know Besakih is closed effectively since September 23, 2017 due to Mount Agung increasing activity.
كُتب بتاريخ 10 أكتوبر 2017
