We had a beautiful fall day with nothing to do. We decided to take a drive in the country. I have been trying to hit as many NPS parks as I can. The visitor center was friendly and clean. The staff was lovely and the short film was well do and informative. The buildings were interesting and the park was well maintained. It is adjacent to French creek state park. We enjoyed the exhibits and then we walked around the lake. Our total walk for the day was about 3.5 miles. It was a great way to spend a day outside.

We enjoyed the self-guided walking tour in a beautiful setting, learning about the making of iron ore by the early settlers in America. Hopewell Furnace is well worth the visit. Don't miss the introductory film and pick up a map in the Visitor's Center.

Great place to learn about the beginning of iron foundries in America. Found out what pig iron is and saw some beautiful gardens.

Hopewell Furnace is an excellent example of the process that the early settlers went through to make the tools needed to build the country. As someone familiar with the process to produce iron and steel I really appreciated the difficulty in producing iron. It is a hidden gem and worth the visit.

I never knew the beginnings of Iron or Iron ore and learned so much. We’ll set up to easily explore on your own. Make sure to get a map in the visitors center. Rangers give talks as well to give a great overview before starting as well as a film inside. Those of our past were beyond impressive. This stop is well worth your time if you have a love of or interest in history.

This is a great hidden gem that has a great story about PA’s role in the iron industry. It has the most well preserved furnace and gives a good history of the iron ore process, along with what life was like for those that lived and worked there. Definitely recommend stopping if you’re in the area. The National Park Service does a great job at all their sites and I stop at one any chance I get.

Impressive display of structures and artifacts that highlight the importance of this area during the Industrial Revolution. Wonderful way to spend a couple hours and enjoy the beautiful grounds, the animals, and the buildings, while learning about an important part of our American history.

This is a hidden gem of the National Parks. We took a day trip there and had a great time. Our grandchildren were interested in it and were wanting to do the JR ranger program. We printed out the booklets on line and while we drove there they worked on the parts that they could until we toured the site.
At the visitor center there is a small museum and film that explains the site. We were lucky that Ranger Bill was there and he gave us a 15-20 presentation that explained more about the site.
Unfortunately the main house was not open but the still working water wheel that ran the bellows was a very ingenious machine and was extremely interesting. In total we spent 2 hours there. You could spend more time as there are 9 hiking trails. Also in the fall there is apple picking nearby.

Was not aware this site existed until a family member took us there while visiting PA. Unfortunately, we arrived 30 minutes before closing and had to walk around really quickly outside and could only see a few things. Looks like there is a lot to offer and could definitely spend a few hours there in the future on our next visit. Grounds are kept up nicely and information stands were helpful. I'm sure we only scratched the surface on what we could see. Will return again and plan on spending several hours there and checking out the visitor center and information inside. Bummer the park closes the gates at 5 pm in the summer.

I like to visit National Park Service sites when I travel. On a recent trip back from Philadelphia, Hopewell Furnace foot the bill for time and location.
When I arrived at the site, I spoke with a ranger. When I said I was looking to spend about an hour, he suggested I check out the exhibits inside the visitor center and then head outdoors as I could watch the film later on YouTube.
The site was in a gorgeous location and does a great job of showing what life was like in an iron furnace settlement. I really enjoyed seeing the waterwheel and bellows operating for the furnace.
I unfortunately was not able to visit the ironmaster's mansion, which was closed. The ranger said they just installed a new HVAC system in the building to protect its contents and hadn't finished reinstalling exhibits. Hopefully others will be able to see that soon.
The only real knock I had on the site was that some of the display panels were older and need updated. It looked like local site staff tried to augment things on their own - some displays don't match the normal NPS style. The audio recordings in some buildings also did not work.
After seeing the site, I took a short stroll over to adjacent French Creek State Park to see Hopewell Lake that provided the water for the iron furnace.
All in all, a nice visit. I highly recommend it.

We have Therapy Dogs and we work with some children from our local schools and they are planning a picnic tomorrow there and we wanted to be sure the dogs were permitted. The teacher had called and was told Service Dogs and Therapy Dogs were allowed. I need to confirm that before we travel up there. There is a difference between Service Dogs and Therapy Dogs.

About how long should we allocate to visit with the family if we are planning on being there in the summer months?
كُتب بتاريخ 28 يناير 2017
It depends on the age of the party - young children, teens?? and what the level of interest is for history. At times there are also special exhibits which could add time to your visit. You should check with the National Park Service for any special exhibits. If you watch the movie and walk through all the buildings, I would say 1 - 2 hours depending on level of interest.

Greetings,
My ancestors worked at the Hopewell Furnace during the 1800's (and at Warwick Furnace in the 1700's). Decades ago, I saw one of my relative's names in the pay records on display at Hopewell.
Could you tell me, is there digital access to Hopewell Furnace's (and other forge) archives? I'm in DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and am researching furnaces and forges of the era for an historic presentation.
Thank you for any leads.

Yes, we take our two dogs there for walks through the historic areas and into French creek park. Leash laws are in place and dog waste canisters are located near the visitor center. Our dogs love to visit and we do too.
excerpt taken from website: Pets are allowed in outdoor areas of the park so long as they are on leash. Only service animals or service animals in training are allowed inside park buildings.
