Impressive display of structures and artifacts that highlight the importance of this area during the Industrial Revolution. Wonderful way to spend a couple hours and enjoy the beautiful grounds, the animals, and the buildings, while learning about an important part of our American history.

This is a hidden gem of the National Parks. We took a day trip there and had a great time. Our grandchildren were interested in it and were wanting to do the JR ranger program. We printed out the booklets on line and while we drove there they worked on the parts that they could until we toured the site.
At the visitor center there is a small museum and film that explains the site. We were lucky that Ranger Bill was there and he gave us a 15-20 presentation that explained more about the site.
Unfortunately the main house was not open but the still working water wheel that ran the bellows was a very ingenious machine and was extremely interesting. In total we spent 2 hours there. You could spend more time as there are 9 hiking trails. Also in the fall there is apple picking nearby.

Was not aware this site existed until a family member took us there while visiting PA. Unfortunately, we arrived 30 minutes before closing and had to walk around really quickly outside and could only see a few things. Looks like there is a lot to offer and could definitely spend a few hours there in the future on our next visit. Grounds are kept up nicely and information stands were helpful. I'm sure we only scratched the surface on what we could see. Will return again and plan on spending several hours there and checking out the visitor center and information inside. Bummer the park closes the gates at 5 pm in the summer.

I like to visit National Park Service sites when I travel. On a recent trip back from Philadelphia, Hopewell Furnace foot the bill for time and location.
When I arrived at the site, I spoke with a ranger. When I said I was looking to spend about an hour, he suggested I check out the exhibits inside the visitor center and then head outdoors as I could watch the film later on YouTube.
The site was in a gorgeous location and does a great job of showing what life was like in an iron furnace settlement. I really enjoyed seeing the waterwheel and bellows operating for the furnace.
I unfortunately was not able to visit the ironmaster's mansion, which was closed. The ranger said they just installed a new HVAC system in the building to protect its contents and hadn't finished reinstalling exhibits. Hopefully others will be able to see that soon.
The only real knock I had on the site was that some of the display panels were older and need updated. It looked like local site staff tried to augment things on their own - some displays don't match the normal NPS style. The audio recordings in some buildings also did not work.
After seeing the site, I took a short stroll over to adjacent French Creek State Park to see Hopewell Lake that provided the water for the iron furnace.
All in all, a nice visit. I highly recommend it.

We went here on Labor Day, on the way to my son's house. It is not far from the PA turnpike. It was all very interesting. Be sure to see the video on Hopewell. They give you a slice of life 200 years ago.

The last time I was here was when I was about 10. It is a well-maintained example of 1700-1800's iron making. We had a 10-minute introduction by Johnny, a volunteer ranger that provided a great overview of the furnace. He painted a great picture of what life was like back in the 1700 - 1800's when the furnace was active. It was amazing to learn that they had to supply an acre of wood to make charcoal to run the furnace for just 24 hours. There is an introductory video available for viewing as well.

This was an off the beaten path national park. There is a decent sized free parking lot, and a small visitor's center/museum/gift shop. I started with a short film about the site and area. Truly interesting learning about an industry/era that defined our nation.

My husband and I visited Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site on March 26, 2022 on a whim after spending some time in French Creek Park. As soon as we arrived a park ranger asked if we've ever been there before and offered to walk around with us to explain the exhibits. We gladly took him up on his offer. He knew tons of information about the historic site even though he had only been working there for a short time. He was enthusiastic about history so we learned a lot and had a great time. The site is beautiful and full of history. We loved it and will return again.

My husband and I went here on a late fall day. Considering the time of the year we went, it was mostly empty. Hopewell Furnace shows what a former iron town used to look like in the late 1700s. It featured houses, a store, a barn with sheep, several buildings with things used for coal mining such as a water wheel and cooling shed. My favorite part was looking at the old children books and toys in one of the houses. They have a lot of hiking trails nearby. While driving to the historical park, we passed by several other furnaces in the area.

This is a must see for any National Park Site lover or history buff. This is a well maintained National Park Service Historic Site. There is a small exhibit about the iron furnace in the visitor center and the Park Ranger and volunteers are happy to share information. The buildings have interesting and informative signage. It is adjacent to French Creek Park with excellent trails.

We have Therapy Dogs and we work with some children from our local schools and they are planning a picnic tomorrow there and we wanted to be sure the dogs were permitted. The teacher had called and was told Service Dogs and Therapy Dogs were allowed. I need to confirm that before we travel up there. There is a difference between Service Dogs and Therapy Dogs.

About how long should we allocate to visit with the family if we are planning on being there in the summer months?

It depends on the age of the party - young children, teens?? and what the level of interest is for history. At times there are also special exhibits which could add time to your visit. You should check with the National Park Service for any special exhibits. If you watch the movie and walk through all the buildings, I would say 1 - 2 hours depending on level of interest.

Greetings,
My ancestors worked at the Hopewell Furnace during the 1800's (and at Warwick Furnace in the 1700's). Decades ago, I saw one of my relative's names in the pay records on display at Hopewell.
Could you tell me, is there digital access to Hopewell Furnace's (and other forge) archives? I'm in DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and am researching furnaces and forges of the era for an historic presentation.
Thank you for any leads.

Pets allowed on the grounds?

Yes, we take our two dogs there for walks through the historic areas and into French creek park. Leash laws are in place and dog waste canisters are located near the visitor center. Our dogs love to visit and we do too.
excerpt taken from website: Pets are allowed in outdoor areas of the park so long as they are on leash. Only service animals or service animals in training are allowed inside park buildings.
