The FQ Visitor Center is amazing! It's on Decatur Street in the upper Quarter, & if you aren't looking for it, you might just walk on by. There is a glass-door entrance from the street, but walk down the open alleyway instead. Lots of informational signs along the way to a lovely open-air courtyard. The interior of the visitor center has the typical National Park stuff - a tiny little gift shop, a place to stamp your National Park Passport, lots of informational & interactive exhibits, & rangers on duty to help. But this place has something extra. While we were there, a live piano performance was underway! Totally worth a half-hour or 45-minute detour in your busy French Quarter day!! Another important thing to note: they have one of the very few public restrooms in the entire Quarter! We did not do the other areas included in this National Park & Preserve, but can highly recommend this little jewel in the Quarter! Go here.

This is a hidden gem in the French Quarter. Walk down a bricked alley with historical information on both sides, and you'll come to a quiet oasis complete with fountain, plants and benches. The Visitor Center is full of books and a variety of souvenirs. Be sure to pick up a schedule of weekly events. These include concerts and speakers. A variety of guided walking tours are also available.

This park consists of 6 sites BUT the New Orleans Jazz Historical Park essentially joined one of the sites so there’s kind of 7 sites included in this park.
We visited three of the original six (1-3 below) and the National Jazz Park.
1) French Quarter Visitors Center -
2) Chalmette Battlefield and Cemetery
3) Barataria Preserve
4) Acadian Cultural Center - did not visit
5) Prairie Acadian Cultural Center - closed temporarily
6) Wetlands Acadian - did not visit
The French Quarter Visitors Center:
An hour would be plenty of time to plan to spend here. Nice walkway entrance with brick walls and a few signs to read along the way. Walkways leads to a beautiful courtyard. If you U-turn left you will be at the entrance doors to the visitors center. They have displays with lots of information and you follow a rectangular pattern as you go around and read everything. In the middle they display a short film. From what I read they used to have a ranger led walking tour but now it’s a stationary talk around 10 am. (We missed it.) Bathrooms were not well taken care of. No soap. Big jugs of hand sanitizer but the pumps didn’t work. We parked at a Premium parking lot close by and it was about $10 an hour to park. We planned to be around for 4 hours so that was pricey and I later realized there were hotels nearby that offered cheaper rates so you may want to do some homework on that or call the park and see if they have recommendations.
New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park - we were told they moved locations a few times and ended here a few years back. From what we could discern they now occupy a room towards the end of the courtyard. They have events most or all days they are open - something like drum circles around 10:30 am and a jazz trio at 2 pm. (Check their website for their schedule) We caught the Jenna McSwain trio and they were great!
We were disappointed with the days of the week these sites were open. Most were open Tuesday- Saturday and not open on Sunday or the Labor Day Holiday.
Chalmette Battlefield and Cemetery - a 15 min drive from the French Quarter Visitors center. Plan for 1.5-2 hours. See my review here:
https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60864-d105866-r967699202-Chalmette_National_Historical_Park-New_Orleans_Louisiana.html
Barataria Preserve - a 30 min drive from the French Quarter Visitor’s Center. Plan for 30 mins ++ depending on how much hiking you want to do. WARNING - gps may take you to a swamp boat tour company. What’s really misleading is there is a sign for the preserve right in front of this business on the road. We had to call to get the address. Good news was, we were only 5 mins away. The correct address is- 6588 Barataria Blvd. We only had time to hike one trail close to the visitors center but we found the boardwalk to be in mild disrepair and about 40% of the trails were closed due to hurricane damage from a year plus ago. We heard lots of animal noises but only saw a locust. The visitors center has very minimal displays.

If you want to immerse yourself in the swamps on foot or by car it is an ideal place. Be careful fauna and flora will be present so keep an eye out

Even the fact that I was alone didn't bother anyone to have a nice chat along the trip. A really nice park and definitely woth the visit. Even the rain wasn't so bad.

It's confusing that the same name applies to an urban visitor center in the French Quarter and a swamp experience a 30+ minute drive outside the city. We visited both. The FQ visitor center was a nice respite from the bustle of the streets with a peaceful courtyard and informative exhibits on Louisiana culture and geography (pubic restrooms, too). The swamp area includes boardwalk hiking trails along which we saw a lot of flora and some fauna including an alligator. The scheduled ranger-led walk was very focused on the young children who dominated the group.

The visitor center was closed.
A small trail from the visitor center with a whole part closed because it is half collapsed.
We still found an alligator at the end
You have to go to Bayou Coquille trail a little further, and at the end of the path turn right over the barrier and there it is superb, with alligators, turtles, snakes and birds

Darren was our tour guide and he was amazing. Lots of knowledge, whitty, and just fun. We had a great time, saw some gators and wildlife. This was definitely worth the money and the time! I even got to hood a baby alligator.

Is there a place to rent kayaks near by?

I.m not sure of the temperature right now.I assume it's close to New Orleans weather. You will have to check the latest weather forecasts on your phone ,etc. It is summer now and it's in the lower 90's with no rain predicted this week. It's humid as the weather here is tropical.
I saw mentions of parking outside the gates if you'll be in the park past 5pm - can you also just park outside the gates if you'd like to go before 9am? I'd like to do the Bayou Coquille trail around 8am if possible, but I wasn't sure if that would work out or not.
If the area isn't designated for parking, I'm not sure what might happen. Why not contact the specific park to find out what they suggest?
Yes you will but Wildlife activity will have diminished to some part due to it being a bit colder. That being said, I visited the area in early February and it was 80 degrees one day. Highly recommend this place for wildlife sightings. This is coming from a biologist.
Which are the best trails to do? Please, i need some suggestion!
There are only two trail, one at each of the stops. Both are very good and you should walk both of them. Keep your eyes out for wildlife, there's plenty of it but you have to have a keen eye. Definitely watch out for snakes, some are venomous.
Which section of the park (I believe there are six locations) were you in when you did this walk? It sounds interesting
Barataria: stop in at the visitor's center if you are there for the guided tour (which I recommend), then get back in car and go back to the trailhead. Staff at the visitor's center will tell you where.
How early do we need to be there to get a free ticket?
No tickets required. Just head out on the trail.
If the tour is advertised as 1hr45min - 2hrs, what else happens during the scheduled 10am - 430pm time span?
It's a self- guided tour anytime between 10am and 4:30pm
