‪If you like bells, slowly played in a park setting, then you will like this. You also must be at least 80 years old - I grew instantly bored. Hearing chime versions of pop songs is excruciating.‬

‪Botanical garden and park around the bell is really beautiful. Another free activity in the area and stretch out your legs.‬

‪We were visiting Washington Park when we heard the bells. The park is very nice and hearing music was a pleasant surprise. ‬

‪Do the tour! The tour of the Carillon’s is about 30 minutes and you learn about how they’re played and how they came to be and how they’re made. Then if you can stay or come back for the concert when they play, it’s worth it. The concert is about another 30 minutes and sounds just wonderful. There are places to sit and relax and geese to feed too. The tour costs a nominal amount but listening to the Carillons is free.‬

‪I went to Washington Park to listen to the free 6:30pm Carillon Concert. Hint - I was able to watch the musician live on Facebook while listening to the concert outside! The concert was 30 minutes long and there was parking nearby. There are a few park benches scattered nearby, otherwise bring a picnic blanket or camp chair. The music was beautiful and well chosen with a theme. The night's theme was "Music for Children" and it was nice to see some multi-generation families out enjoying the evening with picnics. You can visit their Facebook page for up to date information on concerts or to hear previous concerts.‬

‪What a unique experience. We had been looking for unique ideas to experience when we moved to the area. We read about this attraction in Washinton Park and noted it. We finally realized our goal to experience one of these concerts in September. There was an Art Fair being held at the park so we decided to visit the art fair and take in one of the Carillon's regular weekend concerts.

This Carillon is one of only a very limited few that is open to the public in the world. This is a bell tower comprised of 67 bells and is played by a carrillonist. It is a huge musical instrument.

The concerts are held at different times based off the season you are in. You can check the Visit Springfield webpage for the exact concert times but typically from May to September they are offering two concerts a day for Saturday and Sunday at 2pm and 6:30pm. They offer some weekday concerts but check the calendar for when they will have them.

This was an enjoyable unique experience. When you can experience something that you do not get to see often it adds to the experience. This place is unique and highly recommended. Will this experience fill you with wonder and joy, not likely. However if you enjoy something different and unique this is worthy of a stop. It is a free experience what do you have to lose?‬

‪Check the schedule on-line. We went on Wed, they had theme concerts each week at 6:30. Fun to feel the power of the carillon. 67 bells, largest weighs 7.5 tons! Special hint, we found a monitor near the door that allowed us to watch the musician live.‬

‪Try to hit during the Carillon Festival in June but if not they have Christmas time concerts and/or just listen to the bells. We are very fortunate to have this thanks to a very generous contributor in the past. One of the best around the world!‬

‪I would suggest checking their website before planning your visit. They have music concerts only at certain times. If it rains, they will not have the concert. Your visit will include an elevator ride and watching a video. However you will have amazing views from the top. When we were there someone was practicing playing and that can only be heard from the inside. If for some reason you go during the times they have tours and it says on the door “will be back,” it’s because they can’t be open while having a tour and will close the doors. Just wait, might take 30 minutes.‬

‪Washington Park is home to a Dutch-cast 67 bell carillon, one of the world's largest, with a 5-1/2 octave range. It was a gift of local newspaper publisher and one-term state senator, Thomas Rees, who fell in love with Carillons while in Europe during World War I. Housed in a bell tower near the botanical gardens in the park, the Carillon is used for concerts throughout the year.

We happened to be in Springfield at the start of the week-long international festival so decided to attend the first evening's concert. This consisted of alternating carillon and live band performances on a pleasant evening with the park and gardens as a backdrop. The band started with a selection of marches which was followed by the Dutch-born director of the Rees Carillon, Carlo Van Ulft, performing a series of classical selections. The band then returned for another short session and then Lisa Lonie, the resident carillonneur at Princeton University and two Philadelphia area churches, performed.

If you happen to be in the area when they have a concert, be sure to take it in - it is great music and a lot of fun.‬
