Stopping at the Concord Museum was a bit of an afterthought, but it turned out to be a good decision. The museum is very informative, contains many Revolutionary War artifacts, and visiting it really helped bring to life the people and events of 1775.
The museum is easily accessible from the Cambridge Turnpike (which is what you end up on after traveling from Boston on Route 2), and there seems to be ample free parking on the east side of the building.
There are two floors of exhibits, and visitors are provided with a free map of the exhibits of each room. One of the galleries provides an excellent wall-sized video show of the timeline for the events leading up and following the Battles of Lexington and Concord, tracing the path of the British regulars and of the colonial militias who met and engaged them that day.
Small details speak loudly: a powderhorn carried by the first American casualty at Concord Bridge; a collection of flints, recovered from where the assembled militia dropped them in order to install fresh flints in their weapons; recreated living spaces of local residents. All of these worked together to provide a greater appreciation of the circumstances surrounding the actual battle location (about a mile and half further, on the other side of Concord town) which we traveled to next.
The museum staff were very friendly and helpful. The adult tickets ran $15 each (worth it!), and there is a giftshop well-stocked with books, prints, postcards, and the like. There is even a very thoughtful set of free lockable lockers, for storing large items and backpacks while one is visiting the rooms of the museum. An elevator is available, for the mobility-impaired to access the 2nd floor.

The highlight of the museum for us was the minute by minute virtual map of the shot heard round the world starting the Revolutionary War. We viewed it three times! Seeing the actual lantern from the Old North Church made history come alive.
A plus was all the other local Concord history.

Wow we were lucky as we made it before it closed for renovation! This was a highlight of our trip to Maine as we drove to Concord to see several historical attractions. So many historical facts we didn't know or remember. The timeline on the state on the first day of what became the Revolutionary War made it REAL. Also, had no idea the movers and shakers of society pre Civil War were Abolitionists. Just a must for anyone interested in American history!

This small museum is not to be missed. Even if in the area only for revolutionary war sites. The electronic display on 2nd floor is one of the best telling of the battles I have seen and in less than 10 minutes. Better than anything at NPS. Plus you get so much more re Emerson, Thoreau, Alcott.

What an amazing museum! While we were waiting for our tour of the Emerson House (right across the street), we stumbled into this museum. We wished we spent more time at this museum. It is full of amazing actual artifacts, such as Thoreau’s writing desk, the lock from the cell where Thoreau spent a night in prison, and the complete study from Emerson’s house. It was amazing to stand in front of these actual items. In addition, the front desk staff and staff located in each room are friendly, welcoming of questions, and very willing to share their extensive knowledge. This is an excellent museum to visit!

I came here because of the Mass Audubon exhibition since their museum is currently closed. I came for the bird art, but really enjoyed all the other exhibits as well! The local history was really fascinating as someone who knew nothing coming in. I appreciated that they included important local figures from other genders and ethnicities, a welcome take that I did not expect in a museum that could have just as easily kept their exhibits about the handful of white men who get written about in history books. Also, weird compliment, but I thought their map was very well done and easy to follow, more so than some other larger museums I have visited. Overall, this small museum was a true delight to find.

This museum cost us $15 dollars and gave us access to the 2 story museum. The museum was very informative and was a great introduction to the history that took place in Concord, MA.
My one complaint is that there was no true flow to the museum. Information about the significant figures from Concord were very mixed in together.
I would plan to spend at least an hour and a half here.

This small museum is packed with significant historical items. One of the lanterns from the Old North Church is there. The whole of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s library was moved there. It has a great display of items and information from the local area.

This museum offers an awesome historical perspective on Concord with great displays and content.
Beginning with Indigenous history, it highlights the Ameri an Revolution period and its notable Transcendentalists. Emerson's study has been recreated and the museum displays many unique items associated with Thoreau.
Every first time visitor should begin orientation process here.

This museum is a mess. The interpretations of Thoreau and Emerson do not flow or make any sense. The signage is almost impossible to read in many parts of the museum. Interspersed with Thoreau and Emerson are artifacts and material from the Revolutionary War? I would assume in an attempt to be Politically correct there is a section dealing with slavery in Concord but it has no context. I asked a Docent about the interpretation of the museum and signage or issues with it and was blown off. Do not waste your money on this museum.
