‪Firstly the sat nav directed up wrong we only found it by chance it’s not brown signposted and between business units opposite the estuary on the main road. It was a nice walk especially walking to the top with estuary views. We spotted some slow worms under a sheet. There’s a few description boards around. The buildings though are small and not much to look at. I enjoyed this mainly for the views which were superb. It’s not a circular walk when you reach the bottom you are a short distance along the main road where you started. Parking is free‬

‪This is one of the most amazing and interesting places I have ever visited. A former explosives factory overlooking an estuary in North Wales. It closed in 1995 and nature has reclaimed most of the site although there are a few buildings left to indicate its former purpose. The old roads climb upwards through attractive trees and vegetation and eventually one reaches the top of a craggy hill where an old building houses a unique piece of industrial equipment (I won't spoil the surprise by saying what it is).
The views from this high point are spectacular. Gwaith Powdr makes a superb day out for families with children - and it's free 1‬

‪We had a nice walk around here, but it really needs a good map of the reserve layout at the start.
We tend to take a photo of the map at the start of each walk with our phone so we have a ready reference.
The views were lovely.
The path along the cliff bit needs clearing.
The history is very interesting.
Swallows, red kites, both spotted here.‬

‪Stillness and beautiful views, not forgetting the history and tragedies that happened here. How quickly nature takes over such an industrial site.‬

‪We came across the reserve by accident and ventured, what a discovery.
The reserve is beautifully kept with plenty of wildlife if you keep quiet. The history of the site is interestingly explained, I had no idea that such a place existed despite being a regular visitor to the area for 35+ years.
Congratulations to the trust for an excellent reserve.‬

‪Me and Hubby enjoyed a very pleasant walk around here yesterday morning (Wednesday). We started from the entrance by Cookes Industrial Estate. We walked along the tarmac paths and read with interest all of the information boards about the hazardous history of this industrial site = it used to manufacture explosives for 130 years between 1865 and 1995. It was the biggest in Europe. We were able to explore derelict explosives sheds and old machinery. We had a nice chat with a group of North Wales Wildlife Trust volunteers. We walked up a few steps to reach the top where there was a welcoming bench. We rested for a short while to take in the views over the Dwyryd estuary towards Portmeirion, Harlech Castle and the surrounding Snowdonia mountains. Don't forget to take your camera and binoculars.

Then we carried on behind the bench to reach the isolated Pendulum Shed which was open. We went inside where some of the machinery remains. This was used to test the strength of the explosives! We then walked back to the bench and continued forward to reach the dippling pond area where we saw pretty water lilies, dragonflies and damselflies. We made our way down to a memorial area where there were slate plaques commemorating all those who worked/died on this expansive site. We sat on another convenient bench and had a quiet moment.

As we walked down the path we were rewarded with a fantastic view of the new Pont Briwet bridge (which replaced the old toll road). We also saw salt-marsh lamb grazing. Due to the heat-wave, we didn't see (thank goodness) any snakes!!

We exited via the official entrance where there were a few picnic tables and a very small parking area. We were "blown away" by this nature reserve which has turned this decommissioned dangerous explosive works into a haven of peace and quiet where wildlife can thrive naturally. I highly recommend this free and surreal experience.‬

‪Situated on the northern side of the Dwyryd River at Pont Briwet this is the site of an old explosives works that has been dedicated as a nature reserve. Well made internal roads enable a walk up to vantage points overlooking the estuary and across to Porthmadog and beyond. Some interesting remnants of the industrial site can be explored amidst the woodland including the "pendulum building"where the strength of explosives was once tested. An ideal place to break and breathe in the fresh air during a long car journey.‬
