‪This house was a stop on our Open Air Tour of Natchez. Sally shared the story of William Johnson, the barber of Natchez, a man of color and a man of business. His success story was impressive and inspiring.‬

‪Very interesting story of a freed slave who became a wealthy businessman and plantation owner in Natchez during its heyday. The Park Ranger was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Highly recommend it.‬

‪Nice museum to read about William Johnson. And how a emancipated slave lived .. This is a national Park sight. The ranger was very friendly and informative. ‬

‪History lends itself to bumper sticker understandings sometimes. William Johnson's story is a reminder that there are always exceptions. Manumitted, creating a business, acquiring wealth and property, slaves included... and still denied justice... and for all that, a great journalist of his times. While the downstairs exhibition is very, very selective, it is worth a look. ‬

‪Upstairs still not accessible as of Jan 2020. The down stairs is full of very interesting stories about the house and of course William Johnson. No cost to visit and it’s worth the stop. ‬

‪Unfortunately, when we visited the William Johnson House the main area of interest, the upstairs was not accessible, apparently due to the stairs being "no longer safe". This was a disappointment as we had wanted to see the "Barber of Natchez" family living area, built in 1840 and showcasing many original furnishings. Instead, the only part of the house accessible was the modernised ground level exhibits of William Johnson's diary. The diary plaques give a fascinating insight into William Johnson's exceptional life story as a former slave who gained his freedom at the age of eleven and worked his way up society as far as that was possible in those times. I would advise you check the upstairs is accessible again, however, to avoid disappointment.‬

‪We finally completed visiting all the open homes in Natchez. This house gives a person a view of how a free black American lived in Natchez. The price is FREE and I must say we found it interesting and educational. The staff was very friendly and take time to read the plaques - there is a lot of history here that you normally do not see elsewhere. This is a self guided tour.‬

‪This home belonged to a freed Black Man who became a very successful businessman. His history is eye opening and provides a glimpse of his life and interactions in Natchez before the Civil War‬

‪We arrived very early and were able to snag a choice parking spot right in front of the museum. Staff greeted us so warmly. She explained the significance of the life of William Johnson. We read many of the plaques located downstairs. Mr. Johnson's journal was soooo special. You must walk up the stairs to see the family living area. The huge armoire is beautiful. Great museum!!‬
