Other than the incredible place we stayed (Las Terrazas de Dana), our hike through the forest to the series of waterfalls was my very favorite part about our time in Mindo. We were able to walk to the chair lift from our lodge, and from there catch the tarabita to the trailhead. Our host told us to stay left, and take the path leading to the series of seven waterfalls. I found it just beautiful - the falls which just kept coming, the foliage, and the butterflies! It was great for us, though I will say not a super easy hike...quite a bit of uphill and steps. But, worth every step. We were so lucky and had fabulous weather and it wasn't super busy (went on a Thursday morning in June). My son loved the dogs that rode the tarabita with us and one that hiked the first 20 minutes or so with us - no idea who they belonged to, but very sweet, and seemed to simply belong there.

The most impressive waterfall among all other cascades. Very easy to reach either from car park or Tarabita cable car station on the other side of the river. Truly nature experience.

There are two ways you can go: right to one tallish waterfall, or left to pass seven small waterfalls. All the waterfalls are small, even the “tall one” - don’t expect to be blown away.
Each hike takes about 45 minutes each way.
This wasn’t amazing, just a fun day out hiking through the rainforest.
The best part is the cable car! It’s just a quick ride though.
I also saw an armadillo on the hike, that was cool.

We hiked from Mindo Canopy Adventures to the tarabita (cable car) that crosses over a big gorge to the path to the waterfalls. The walk was pretty with giant junglelike plants all around and not strenuous at all. Once we arrived at the tarabita, we were able to hop into the car as soon as it arrived from the other side. It moved faster than I expected and was a fun ride with spectacular view. $5 if purchases separately, but it was part of our combo ticket at Mindo Canopy.
Since we had things we wanted to do back in town, we only hiked to two or three of the waterfalls (not sure if the first trickle counted as a waterfall). We enjoyed the walk—a bit steep in parts, but there are steps. I put my feet in at one pool, my daughter took a full dip, and it was COLD but refreshing. Wish I would’ve brought a pair of water shoes with for walking over the painful rocks. It was a nice little excursion. After tarabitaing back to the other side, we followed the road downhill back into town, picking up a little dog friend along the way.

A steep hike to the nearest falls, water was cold and fast flowing so declined an opportunity to swim. We were on an escorted tour so only had time to visit one waterfall. Enjoyed the trip.

While the waterfall is modest, the larger setting is gorgeous. You are in the midst of a Jurassic Park like cloud rain forest. The preferred way to get there is via the one minute Tarabita cable ride over a spectacular gorge. Once on the other side you can spend much of the day hiking the trails and cooling off in a half dozen different cascade pools over a 3 mile stretch of which Nambilla is the closest and largest. While Nambilla, unlike other cascades there, has bathrooms and a changing area, it's not swimmable after heavy rains, while the other cascade pools are.

We are going in April and I am terrified of heights. I would not be able to go on that cable car without having a heart attack. Is there a way to hike to the waterfalls without taking the cable car? I have been reading reviews, but it was kind of unclear. Thanks for any help

Yes, there is a path. A little hidden and the people selling the tickets for the Tarabita are not eager to point it out. Instead of walking Right to the ticket office, look LEFT and the path is just along the edge of a wall - a little snack shop borders it.

Approximately how many hours would one recommend setting aside to hike the waterfalls? I am going to be adventurous and take a bus (not an organized tour) from Quito in the morning. I wanted to do ziplining in the morning and was wondering if I'd have time to do the waterfalls in the afternoon before catching a bus back to Quito in the late afternoon/early evening?

Yea you'd definitely have time. We did the same. Did the 10 canopy zip-line then went to the waterfalls. We did only do to the first big waterfall though, because we didn't wake up until late (wake up early that was our mistake) Give yourself at least two hours if you want to see more than just the first one. Also, last bus from Mindo to Quito leaves at 5 pm. We had to run to make it.
