My husband and I visited rurutu for the whales in september this year. We set up four whale watching tours with raie manta club over 2 days just to increase our chances of seeing whales! As luck would have it this was apparently the best year in a long time for humpback whales according to Axel our awesome guide. Axel called the morning of our first excursion to let us know that even though it was raining we were still good to go and to get our size of wetsuits. They picked us up in a very cool beat up land rover truck at our pension and were super friendly from the get go! The team all speaks French mostly but always told us everything in perfect English as well. We arrived at the harbor to change into wetsuits and pick up the boat driven by a very experienced local fisherman. They use a small boat with a quiet motor so as not to disturb the whales. There is no ladder so you have to push yourself up on the back of the boat to get in but it is doable and everyone helps each other. We could see the whale spouts from the harbor while we were getting ready. We drove out and within minutes found a mother whale and her calf who were very tolerant of us and friendly. They are literally right in front of you. Mom rests on the bottom while baby goes back and fourth to the surface for air. It was mind blowing how close we were. The water was clear and beautiful. There were four mother/baby pairs this year and at least two of them regularly let the snorkelers interact with them. We stayed with them for about 30 min until they swam away. We saw the same pair again a little later and then had the most amazing encounter with a male and female involved in a mating dance. We swam with them for what felt like hours watching them dance around each other and up to the surface and then deep again. You could hear the male singing his song. I might have been crying in the water it was so amazing. You defiantly get the sense that the whales are allowing you to be with them. They can swim away from you in seconds if they want to but they just let you be near them. When you make eye contact with them it is amazing. What I loved about Axel and his team is that they seem genuinely excited themselves to see the whales every time even though they do this every day for several months. Axel was always leading the pack of us with his camera and taking photos. He would exclaim over and over how beautiful it all was and he just loved it. They only take a few people out each time so it never seems over crowded. It was also amazing that they were never strict about the time. The tours are on average 2 or so hours but they never made you get out of the water until the whales ended the encounter. If there was something like this in American I am sure they would make you get out and head back in as soon as the time was up but not in Rurutu. It was all about the whales every time. Over the 2 days and four excursions we saw more whales than I can remember. I kept thinking it could not get any better and it always did. At one point we were in the water with 5 adult whales ( 2 females and 3 males). It was mind blowing. They were all around us in the water and dancing at the surface. This experience exceeded my expectations in everyway. It was beyond anything I could have imagined. The Raie manta club staff was professional, friendly and knowlegable. I can not recommend them highly enough. This is truly the experience of a lifetime and one that is not to be missed. If you can get there you must do this. You will not regret it and one has to wonder how long something like this will go unspoiled. Make it happen if you can!

Exceptionnel, grandiose, inoubliable.

My wife and I work as volunteers on whalewatch boats in Maui and Los Angeles. We're not marine biologists, but we have a lot of hours watching whales from boats. This past season, after a number of years hoping, we finally had a couple of humpbacks poke their noses up on the rail of the boat. But nothing prepared us for what we saw in Rurutu.. As soon as we cleared Moerai harbor, there were two animals milling around a small area just outside the entrance. Our guide Axel went in to ascertain that they were “calm”, and soon beckoned us in.
Meanwhile, we had been watching them surfacing very near the boat (very near = 10 to 50 yards!), but hadn't seen them for a few moments. I slipped into the water, and as soon as the bubbles cleared from my mask, THERE THEY WERE. Two huge adults, stationary, slowly sculling their pect fins right in front of me. The water was gin clear, and they were eighty feet away, but seemed like 20 feet away. They filled the mask. They stayed more or less in the area for 40 minutes, rising to breathe from time to time. Occasionally one or the other would cruise away, then come back. As our other guide Justine remarked, they truly seemed curious about us. They definitely give one pause when they start to ascend if they are pointed right at you. We felt like we were in a Flip Nicklin video, just the experience we came for. On a second encounter a few minutes later, we swam with four adults in deep open ocean. One was a female with lots of white on the sides as well as white pectoral tops, less frequently seen here.
The boat captains are extremely experienced local fishermen, and the guides are expert SCUBA instructors who work in the Tuamotus the rest of the year. They are able to make the cat herding process of guiding the snorkel trip fun and exciting. Like the best SCUBA instructors, they know how to unobtrusively keep their clients safe while appearing to just be out enjoying a nice day in the ocean with the gang. They clearly enjoy the best job in the world.
Our day started in Moerai harbor and proceeded past the airport downweather to Avera, where the trucks were magically waiting to take us back to the lodge. That way we were not part of the pounding boat ride back to Moerai. Later in the week the windward Moerai side became too rough, and the trips originated and ended in Avera. We understand close range swimming encounters happened on each and every trip this week. Axel says it's the best year since 2003.
Our total cost for the whale swim? 11,000 CFP, about $125. Of course, you have to get to Rurutu, and you have to stay somewhere... We stayed at Rurutu Lodge and recommend it heartily. The dive staff are on site in the evenings, and seem to enjoy swapping sea stories and celebrating the day's adventure as much as the guests.
Curious? Come on down before well intentioned whale nannies and self ordained “scientists” shut down this incredible adventure. There's no talk of that so far, but it can't be too long coming. It's too good to go unpunished.
