Dont skip the entry pavilion video. Its amazing history and it sets the stage for what you will experience and learn.
Dont just wander through without following the informative map/guide.
Truly you should not ignore the significant history here.
The endless beauty here can and will constantly distract you from the small and monumental artifacts that litter this park. Take your time see everything and make sure your camera has an empty chip and is fully charged.

Our family loves visiting National Park sites so we were excited to visit Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park while visiting the big island of Hawaii. The park is located pretty far south on the island and it took us a little over an hour coming from Waikoloa. It is next to a popular snorkeling spot that is not part of the park. There is a large parking lot and you enter the park through the park store. The NPS stamp is located in this area. There is an auditorium area for viewing the park film but the audio was not working. The park numbers various places to see on the map which is very helpful. The main area of the park was actually smaller than I thought and was very easy to navigate.
We arrived around 11 am and while it was not very crowded it was very hot. There is some areas that provide shade but much of it is pretty open so going early would be advised. We walked around and read the map while stopping at the various sites. We typically do the Junior Ranger program but decided to pass this time. We spent a little over an hour here and really enjoyed learning more about native Hawaiian culture.

We enjoyed stopping here and learning the history behind the place of refuge. You just walk around and learn about the culture and what this place means. Lots of huge palm trees. The area is beautiful. We weren’t there long. There are goats that roam freely all over the island. We saw several as we were leaving right beside the parking lot.

This is one of the many historical parks to must see while on the Big Island. There is so so much history of what the Hawaiian life was all about. There are 17 sections of the park that explains what these areas represented for the native people. If you love history this is inspiring!!!

My family and I enjoyed learning the history of the Hawaiian people here and touring the grounds. It’s a nice park and very well maintained. Clean and quiet. Make sure you watch the film by the visitors center and grab yourself a map to learn more.

We were interested in learning more about Hawaiian history and were encouraged to come here by locals. Taking a self-guided tour of the park was interesting, but the highlight for us was the talk given by ranger Kala Holiday, which was electrifying. Ranger Holiday is native Hawaiian and gave his talk dressed in traditional Hawaiian garb. He is an amazing speaker who held us captive. My friend said she had goose bumps listening to him!

What a beautiful and historic site! You start by entering a large parking lot and getting easy access to the site. It’s a self guided experience but you get a helpful map with additional information to help you on your trip. There were staff available to answer questions if you had any. The site was clean and well maintained, and very easy to navigate (especially if you had the map). It was a very interesting and beautiful place with gorgeous surroundings. Great opportunity to learn about cultural practices in the area. They had water fountains and toilets, as well as a hiking path nearby that leads to a beautiful viewpoint.

Easy place to visit and learn some history of natives. Well preserved and well maintained. The colored fishes in the shallow water make it an interesting place.

This is a nice place to spend an hour if you are interested in Hawaiian culture. This was both a site of refuge for those who broke with traditional Hawaiian customs and at one time was a burial place for ali'i, Hawaiian high chiefs. The park is quiet and peaceful. Certainly not a spectacular destination but definitely worth a visit if you are interested in Hawaiian culture and history.

Hi Rob Can you tell me where you rented the kayak? I am interested in doing it that way but don't want to do an organized kayak tour. Thanks

How is it free, did you go on a specific day to be free? Usually there is a charge.

We paid $20 for our family to enter the park. You can return for no charge for the next week by showing your paid receipt 🙂

Hi
Our cruise ship is at Kailua Kona for one day - is the park easy to get to ? Could we make our own way there ?
Thanks

Sorry, just saw this - we took a Roberts tour. One issue is the port requires a tender so you need to be sure you have plenty of time to make the return tender. We thought the site was well worth the cost and time of the tour even though the tour guide and coffee plantation stop were not. There is also a stop at a painted church - tour (Roberts or other) is probably much cheaper than cab. Rental car is an option, but the tender issue complicates that.

Though many guide books and misguided residents claim that our park and "Two Step" (traditionally known as Lae kole) are one in the same, that is completely incorrect. We are adjacent to one another, but are managed by separate organizations. Our parking lot is not intended to accomodate visitors that are snorkeling outside of our property, nor is snorkeling/water access permitted anywhere within our National Park. Visitors going to "Two Step" are encouraged to park along the road when space is available. If no parking is available, it would be best to try another snorkeling site instead or return later when less crowded.

HI! I understand that you can have a talk by a ranger. Is that correct ? At what time does this take place? Mahalo Laura

We attended two Ranger talks mid morning, and close to noon. Ask the exact times upon entering the park. Both very informative, highly recommended. One is in the covered pavilion, and the other is a walking tour of the park.

No tour necessary, though I'm sure there are folks hoping to charge you. Pu'uhonua o Honaunau it is an easy drive from Kona, and it is a National Park, so other than a modest entrance fee, no other costs. Once in Park Rangers give great interpretive talks and answer questions, and the area is small enough to fully explore on your own without concern for getting lost.

The park does provide big bubble tired wheel chairs designed to safely and effectively wheel across the sand. I am not sure if it is possible to reserve them in advance but the last several times I've been in the park I have seen the wheel chairs not being used but available.
