‪Very disappointing. Trail closed at less than half a mile. No notification anywhere. No access to the historic sites. The signs were mostly illegible. No one at the office. This trail is no longer as described and mapped.‬

‪This is one of our favorite walks in the Santa Fe area. Although only about 1 1/4 miles long, it does connect to the Dale Ball trail system if you have time for a longer walk. We like this walk for two main reasons. First is time. It is easy to access and short enough that you can get a little fresh air and exercise even if time is limited. Second, you go from field to forest and around a pond in a short distance. What you see changes with the seasons so going back several times is worthwhile. There are plenty of birds and other animals. The only real problem is parking. The small lot fills up most days. Fortunately, parking is available along the road so that's not too much of a problem.‬

‪While this is not a "must do", I enjoyed the relatively short walk of several miles through this preserve where we saw interesting grasses, shrubs, cottonwood trees with wildlife such as various kinds of birds and lizards along the trail. After walking through some lower areas, the trail takes you up along a higher path where you can look out over the area previously walked, then returns you to the parking area. It was quiet and pretty.‬

‪Beautiful nature walk suitable for children and adults who are adjusting to altitude. Difficult to find- we got lost, and had to drive to the edge of town to follow directions given on website. ‬

‪The sign boards made this both informative and humorous. Benches along the way allow opportunities to sit and enjoy the scenery. Wide open paths are, for the most part, very walk-able. However, the trail (toward the end) has had some wash-out or slippage. With some effort, it can be circumvented but most advise that the hiker turn around and forget about the loop circuit.

This was our first time at this trail and we thoroughly enjoyed it.‬

‪I got here before 8am and there was plenty of parking at the trailhead, but that might not be the case if you arrive mid day. The parking lot was much fuller when I returned 90 minutes later. It was in the upper 50s on an August morning when I started, so make sure you layer up when you come here; it can be notably cooler than downtown - even if you are a couple of miles away. This circuit has a branch that connects with the entrance to the local Audubon Society on Upper Canyon Road. Plenty of seats to watch and wait for wildlife, though all I saw were cottontail rabbits. ‬

‪The Santa Fe Canyon Preserve is a mini-gem very close to the city, but far away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas. It is a Nature Conservancy property at the site of a former dam that supplied water for the city of Santa Fe. It is now a wild area with a pond (something unusual in the area) which attracts birds and a stream habitat that attracts beavers.

Although you can see a few houses nearby, you feel like you are a million miles away from civilization. It is quiet and you can hear the breeze in the trees and the birds. Place is busy in spring and fall, not with people but with birds. It's a nice quite place to spend an hour or two and get away to nature. It's also need the Davey Audubon Center, so a trip to both is easy in an afternoon or morning.‬
