Again, we didn't hike but when traveling via car you pass through this range. Not sure I would have gone out of my way to visit.

My wife and I made the Walnut Creek Drive going from the Flagstaff airport to Sedona and back again going to the Grand Canyon. The scenery is spectacular along the drive. The area along the creek were very picturesque. It is a curvy and hilly road but well worth the drive.

After visiting the interesting Visitor center, we hiked the beautiful Rim trail in the Walnut Canyon.
We were amazed by the dwellings, which were built 900 years ago by the Sinagua Indians. It's very interesting to notice that “sin agua” means “without water” in Spanish language. Indeed, accessing water and hunting were very complicated for Sinagua Indians. On the path, there were has very fine displays! The hike allowed us to:
-discover this beautiful landscape in the canyon, composed of steep sandstone cliffs. The shapes of the rocks show that they come from dunes of an old desert sculpted by the wind !!!
- better understand how the life of Indians, by visiting the dwellings, which were built in the shallow alcoves of the sandstone cliffs. The dwellings were dug out, having cave-like appearance.
Altogether, I highly recommend to visit Walnut Canyon National Monument!!! Unfortunately, we did not have time enough to hike to spot the very rich fauna in the canyon!

The canyon is very pretty but rather small for hiking. The visitor center was not open yet. There is a small paved trail at the top and some trails heading down, though again at this time they were not open. A nice short trip if your strapped for time.

Another walk through time. Allow a good 2 hours for this, the 'Island' walk around is fascinating. Hopefully the full walk will reopen in spring 2020. This is our 2nd visit, and we were lucky enough the first time to get the entire loop. Call ahead to check on how they progress in the path improvement. The rim walk is great too, flat all the way.

vistas are beautiful, very busy road so plan on taking your time. Places you can pull off for lunch or soaking in the views. As you head towards sedona the scenery changes and the redstone rocks are everywhere, gorgeous. We enjoyed it so much we went both ways to make sure we got to see all the views! Go for it!!!

Fellow tourists told us about the Scenic Vistas - on Walnut Canyon Drive out east of Flagstaff, so we visited when going that way. Sure enough there was indeed beautiful mountain scenery, densely packed forest & rocky outcrops. Nice. Enjoy!

if you love your car, do not take it on this road! Big holes and ruts and not any good views at all.-a waster of time

After visiting Mesa Verde Cliff dwellings we didn't know what to expect but we enjoyed this as well. The steps up and down could be daunting depending on your physical condition but the average person should have no problem.
You are able to see up cliff dwellings up close that were lived in centuries ago by the native americans of the area. The canyon itself is beautiful but it's hard to imagine how these early people were able to build these dwellings on the side of cliff and live their lives there. A unique opportunity to explore early history first-hand. A must see if your in the area!

So is it correct that people are mixing up these 2 roads? The scenic one is to Sedona and the Walnut Drive is not worthwhile?

Correct. Walnut Drive is just like a driveway, as it takes you to the Monument, and that’s it. The one from Flagstaff to Sedona is the super gorgeous scenic one.
