We are so glad we stopped in to the Harold Schafer Visitor Center! The exhibits and video are extremely well done. It’s a clean, fresh, and welcoming place any day…but especially on a hot day. Harold and Sheila were impressive and generous people and it’s so wonderful that their story continues to be told.

Harold Schafer— a marketer extraordinaire and outstanding philanthropic citizen. Medora and everything about it can be traced to this man and his wife. The Heritage Center clearly and interestingly presents background and aspects of this couple. His marketing of Gold Bond Glass Paste that had no glass or paste as well as other products such as Mr. Bubble made him a multi-millionaire. He used his money to develop and grow Medora and is credited with much good. The Heritage Center is free and extremely worthwhile.

Don't miss this! It's free and fascinating. It's one thing to visit Medora but you have to check out this spot to find out the true history of the town and Schafer's role in making it into a vacation destination. What a cool story!

It is very cool how they have set this place up Really enjoyed it, the history behind how Harold got started along with how his family has truly helped out and continues to help out Medora. Truly for Harold to be a salesperson, I think he has instilled that in so many of the Medora towns people as everyone is very friendly and helpful.

We enjoyed this FREE museum learning about Harold Shafer and his impact on Medora. The displays are colorful and interesting with helpful information posted alongside. The videos airing the commercials of his products are fun to watch. If you listen carefully, maybe you'll recognize certain voices including Casey Kasem. The two takeaways I have from my visit are 1. Mr. Shafer enjoyed financial success as a result of very hard work but his journey had business failures too (meaning you have to try new things) 2. Mr. Shafer's generosity was astounding and often anonymous. We can all adopt a bit of his philanthropic passion.

Thanks to Mr. Schafer I got to take a fun trip down 'memory lane' and learn the history behind the products he promoted ( Mr. Bubble, Snowy Bleach, stencils w/ Glass Wax) and the town he boosted into what it is today. Definitely worth the time to check out this museum and learn about his life, his accomplishments, his philanthropic endeavors and his motivation. And at no charge too! You can easily spend more than an hour if you watch the old commercials (what fun), and his story video.

Not sure, but I think many of the staff are volunteers. Their heart is in their work. The building houses the museum of Ed Schafer's life, businesses and history of Medora.

After spending most of the day in the park, we stopped late afternoon to see this free museum devoted to the life of Harold Schafer, a man who devoted time, energy, and money to revitalizing the town of Medora. Those in our age category may remember some products of Mr. Schafer's company -- Snowy Bleach and Mr. Bubble. It was fun to watch the old 1960's commercials that advertised his products. We enjoyed the interesting story of how Mr. Schafer came to be involved in Medora. The restored Rough Rider Hotel is a great testament to his efforts as well as the beauty of the pretty town. Residents of Medora have nurtured a nice town.

Harold Schafer is "Why Medora is here today." Harold Schafer spent his own time, talent, and treasure to build up Medora to what it is today. People need to know the inspirational story behind this man. This heritage center is a museum dedicated to Harold Schafer. Visitors will not understand Medora unless they understand Harold Schafer and visitors will not understand Harold Schafer unless they visit this FREE museum. Visitors will be positively impressed.

There is a great 23 minute video that explains Harold and his life and interest in Medora. The center is free and has some great exhibits. (Also nice bathrooms and water faucets!)
The volunteers who work there can answer a lot of questions and have suggestions of fun things to do.
