‪This can be a short stop while touring Vicksburg National Military Park. You can use the walkways to tour the insides of the ship. There is a small museum and gift shop, though closed due to covid in Sept. 2021.‬

‪Fantastic…. Totally worth the trip to see. Unfortunately the museum was closed but you can see the Ship. We had a guide who provided a lot of information. I would highly recommend booking a guide‬

‪The USS Cairo as displayed is a remarkably well restored superstructure of the ship that allows the visitor to visualize the ship, see some of the original ship, and appreciate how freakin’ miserable service on that thing must have been. The damage to the starboard bow is visible and well-preserved. It really is a must-see for visitors to the Vicksburg National Military Park.‬

‪I stopped by the USS Cairo on my driving tour of Vicksburg NMP. The ship was raised from the bottom of the nearby Yazoo River in the 1960s. The remains of the ship can be toured with items like the boilers and paddles still visible. It was really awesome walking through such a historic ship that I remember reading about in history class as a kid. The museum wasn’t open, but since the ship is outside under a cover, it was open for viewing. The national cemetery is also located here. This is a must stop location in Vicksburg.‬

‪A highlight to the military park was to view the “city class” 13-gun, 175 ft long US Iron Clad Cairo at the Vicksburg National Military park.
The 2.5-inch-thick iron armor plate was bolted to 2 ft thick white oak frames. These wood frames were designed to absorb the impact of the shot against the plating. Without this thick backing the iron plate would most likely have shattered like glass.
The 5 steam boilers at full load consumed about one tone of coal per hour to produced 140 # steam pressure which ran two steam piston engines on either side of large central paddle wheel (location inside of both the side casements), giving the craft an approximate 7 MPH speed.
The 13 guns of the Cairo consisted of large 8-inch smoothbores, 42-pound rifled cannon, 32 pound smaller smoothbores, 30-pound rifle cannon and a single 12-pound howitzer. For example, a 32-pound smoothbore fired a SOLID 32 pound solid cannon ball that could reach out about one mile. This specific cannon required a 11-man crew to load / maneuver / fire.

The Cairo is one of only 4 surface vessels (USS Cairo / USS Monitor / CSS Neuse / CSS Jackson) still in existence (on display) from the civil war.

‪The visitor center was closed unfortunately, but we got a good look at the ship with plenty of explanatory signs. Certainly worth seeing.‬

‪The reconstructed ship is very interesting. You get a real feel for the power and complexity of these vessels. Unfortunately, the museum was closed when we were there.‬

‪My wife and I have visited Vicksburg National Military Park on other occasions so we weren't terribly disappointed when we realized on our most recent trip that the USS Cairo Museum was closed because of the COVID pandemic. Of course, visitors can park in the parking lot and stroll around one of the first American ironclad warships built at the beginning of the Civil War. Inside or outside, the Cairo is an impressive site. After participating in the capture of Fort Pillow on the Mississippi River in June 1862, it was sunk in December 1862 while clearing mines for the attack on Haines Bluff on the Yazoo River. It was the first ship ever to be sunk by a mine remotely detonated by hand. Over the years, the ship was forgotten and slowed covered by silt and sand. It was found in 1956 and salvaged from the bottom of the river in 1965. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, the Cairo was opened as a museum in a shelter on the tour road near the Vicksburg National Cemetery in the Vicksburg National Military Park in November 1980. The recovery of artifacts from the ship revealed a treasure trove of weapons, ammunition, naval stores and personal gear of the sailors who served on board. Externally, visitors can see one of the cannons on the side of the Cairo and the framework for the paddlewheels.‬

‪Was not open, so could not get close. But even so it was a good view and worth the trip. Certainly an interesting naval and civil war vessel.‬

‪Set in a magnificent hillside venue, you can immediately get a perspective of the shear size of this ship .In pandemic mode, access to everything is limited (many buildings are closed). So you can't get very close to the ship itself, but you can still appreciate the grandeur. Wander around and get a few pics. The USS Cairo is located in the same park as the Vicksburg battlefields, so once you're done looking at the ship you can simply continue onward and experience the rest of the park. Recommended‬
