‪A very impressive and moving cemetery. As it is important to remember history, we were honored to stand on hallowed ground. Very well kept and simply beautiful. Trees and rolling landscape are a sight to see.
The entrance sits in a
“concerning” neighborhood and we passed police patrolling. Don’t let this deter your visit-the destination is well worth it.‬

‪This is a huge cemetery with many graves of Confederate soldiers. We were there on June 9, 2021 and found a soldier who was born on June 9, 1863, which I thought was rather cool. After much walking we found the grave of "Douglas" the camel. The tombstones are grouped according to states which makes it easy to find the sites of ancestors.‬

‪Such an interesting cemetery with very historical headstones. Well worth the time to drive around slowly.‬

‪Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg, Mississippi, is as celebrated or as visited as such iconic cemeteries as Arlington in Washington DC, Hollywood in Richmond, Virginia, and Graceland in Chicago. Located at 326 Lovers Lane, Cedar Hill predates the Civil War and remains as one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in the United States that is still in use. It contains the graves of over 5,000 Confederate soldiers with over 1,600 of them identified, including Major General John Stevens Bowen, who was killed during the siege of Vicksburg in 1863. Two other Confederate generals, Isham Warren Garrott and Martin Edward Green, who also were killed at Vicksburg, also are buried on the beautifully landscaped Soldiers' Rest plot. But the most interesting and most popular attraction in the cemetery is Douglas the camel, a domesticated camel that was used by the Confederate army to transport supplies during the Civil War.‬

‪Found on Atlas obscura , we always try to visit the unique . This one, a gravestone marking an obedient and trustworthy camel from the civil war, was a relatively easy find. Hang a left onto Lindsey St. from Sky Farm Ave....the grave stone is a couple rows in on your left, ~100yds from the turn-in. The GPS coordinates are: 32.3643, -90.8599 (according to my phone) and the Cemetery is easily accessed by car. Recommended‬

‪In contrast to the military battlefield, this cemetery was more difficult to find, but if you are in Vicksburg for the history, it's worth a drive through the confederate soldier burial regions‬

‪To be honest, we came for the Douglas the Confederate camel gravestone. If you aren't familiar with this little civil war episode, that is both tragic and sort of funny, I would recommend googling his story. The camel grave is located exactly where previous reviewers have noted: Enter the secondary entrance at Lindsay street and you feel find it part way up the hill, on the left, second row before you reach the second cross street. I only want to add that the camel gravestone is small and blends in. We were expecting it to be larger and easily identifiable and missed it on our first drive by.
The whole cemetery is beautiful and well maintained. It is quiet, somber and dignified. I am hoping that we can preserve this place and others like it instead of rushing to erase our history.‬

‪After the Vicksburg National Cemetery being closed, we decided to visit Cedar Hill. So glad we did. We got to see the Confederate graves and the grave of Douglas the Camel, who worked in the Civil War as a pack animal. If you enter on Lindsey street, just before the 2nd road to the left, you'll see his marker. It's clearly a camel marker. On the 2nd row. There's also, way up on the hill past the Confederate memorial statue (to the left of it), a piano tombstone for a young lady who died many years ago. So neat and unusual! Look for Estelle's name and photo on the white piano marker.‬

‪Pretty old cemetery a lot of history from the civil war, including some small signage regarding a ironclad ship and a military camel. Take a minute to view the "visit Vicksburg" or atlas obscura website for a guide to the camel's grave and story. Came in conjunction with touring Vicksburg National park.‬

‪My wife, who is generally so-so on the state of Mississippi, said “Okay. You can bury me here.” This is possibly one of the nicest old cemeteries I have see.

Plus, be sure to find the grave site of Old Douglas the Confederate Camel who is buried here. ‬
