Visit El Cocuy National Park.
Julio Suarez He is one of the best guides I have ever met.
First of all, he speaks good English, so if you don't speak Spanish you have nothing to worry about.
Julio knows a lot about Colombia, the region and several important hiking destinations and different national parks.
He takes the time to explain the social and cultural aspects of Colombia and its regions.
He is very professional about safety and the high altitude acclimatization process.
We did a good acclimatization walk and slept in the capilla shelter(3600m) where a nice family looked after us.
The second day we walked to the large lagoon in the mountains 4600 meters, good weather but tough walking.
I recommend good preparation for any of the three hikes, they are demanding.
Additionally, she cooks and prepares a balanced local meal, very delicious with natural products, many vegetables, to help me be better in my experience in the Cocuy National Natural Park.
It was an amazing and wonderful experience for me for 2 days.

Landscapes of another level, the demand is tremendous but satisfying, when you reach the edge of the glacier.
It is recommended, waterproof, light clothing and good hydration.

We had a fantastic experience in the national park.
Our guide Julio Suarez (WhatsApp +57 3102438878) has put together an excellent program: We first acclimatized one day outside the park, then went on two hikes in the national park. The organization, accommodation in La Capilla with a family and the food was perfect.
Julio speaks good English and also travels in his own country, which is why he can assess the specifics of the region around El Cocuy well for people from abroad.

If you are interested in hiking and beautiful landscapes, I can highly recommend going to El Cocuy. We did everything with our Guide Carlos ( +57 313 2525064), who speaks some english and is very charismatic. We felt very welcome from the first moment and had a stunning time in the national park. Even though it’s quite challenging (not the hike, but the altitude), I feel lucky I didn’t miss this opportunity.

Julio was great!! Our trip to El Cocuy got cancelled last minute because of a strike at the park. Julio presented an option to Villa de Leyva and ended up being a wonderful trip. He was a great guide, very knowledgeable and really cares about his clients. We felt very comfortable and safe during our 2 day hike. He has a new phone # which I posted above.

Hello everyone I want to share that I visited El Cocuy in February, I went alone but I met Julio Suarez who was my Guide during my days of stay, he is an incredible person, he knows the territory, the community and highlights the importance of preserving the environment, without doubt the landscapes are charming and worth knowing facing the mountain demand. Julio shared with me the key points to prepare for the adventure, without losing any details, costumes, food, hot drink and above all the best attitude ☺️

My partner and I did 3 hikings on late July. It’s a beautiful place but conditions were extreme (8 hours of continous and extremely cold rain during one of the hikes); as a challenge was an amazing experience but sightseeing during the climbs and at the top was quite limited. The hightlight was a snowstorm at Laguna Grande de la Sierra that made the whole trip worthwhile. Also, we hired and experienced guide (Julio Suarez from Bioandes, his Whatsapp +573105581405) and it made the whole difference; we cannot but recommend him: Absolutely knowledgeable, service-oriented and a kind person. He arranged everything for us and made our trip the best possible given the extreme conditions. Thanks Julio, you are really the best! We are for sure coming back, hopefully in sunnier days.

July 2024.
Very nice National Park.
I have done the El Pulpito trekking.
Here follows a collection of information for this trip.
1) Transport
In order to reach El Cocuy from Bogotà, you need to take a bus.
Two companies perform the trip: Libertadores, Gacela or Paz del Rio.
The Bogotà <-> El Cocuy trip takes 12h.
On common online websites like busbud, redbus, bookaway, only Libertadores is present.
The three companies perform the route on different days, therefore you can check, as example on the Facebook page of Paz del Río, the last timetable available.
You can by the tickets at their ticket office at the Bogotà terminal de Transporter Salitre. In El Cocuy there are also two points that sells the tickets.
I suggest to take the evening buses from Bogotà. I Lost mine and so I took the next day the one leaving at 6am. The problem is that the ride is very long and we arrived late in the evening, and almost all the restaurants were closed.
2) Hostel
I stayed at El Caminante. Simple room but everything was fine.
The breakfast was not a buffet, but it was ok for me starting a trekking, with scrambled eggs, bread, cheese, fruits already prepared in cubes or slices.
Attention, they do not have a restaurant.
3) Guide
My guide was Martha Silva, which is also the owner of the hostel El Caminante. We spoke by WhatsApp before my arrival in Spanish, but she also speaks English.
She booked an entrance to the national park, the insurance, the transportation to the national park entrance. I was alone, therefore I had to pay the guide and the transport alone, but if you are in a group it will be much cheaper.
I made the El Pulpito del Diablo trekking, and it was very nice!
Attention: with this trekking you will arrive at 4850m, you could feel mountain sickness, have a look about this topic.
I really recommend to do this trekking, and also the hostel and the guide Martha. Everything was fine, and I spent a very good day on the El Pulpito trekking.

I loved my three-day trek in the mountains of El Cocuy Park. The views are sublime and reward the efforts of to climb to more than 4500m altitude to admire lagoons and glacier.
Julio is a terrific Guide who knows the region perfectly and is committed to transmitting the beauty of Colombian nature and traditions. He speaks very good English, which allowed us to discuss a lot during the hikes. The cottage La Esperanza is also exceptional, the rooms are spacious and comfortable to rest between two hikes, and the whole family is very warm and welcoming.
I highly recommend the services of Julio, who organizes everything for you, transportation, accommodation during the trek, formalities for the entrance to the national park, and offers an unforgettable experience. Thank you very much!

Hello, can I ask some questions about Parque Nacional El Cocuy?
1. Is it possible to get to the town of Cocuy and then on to the park the next morning in a rental car? Or is bus/lechero the only way?
2. Is it possible to climb any of the glaciers to the top? (Ritacuba Blanco in particular?)
3. How difficult are the three hikes? (Class 1-5?)
4. Is it possible to Is it still required to have a guide to take one of the three open day hikes? Is there a way to contact and hire guides before my arrival?
5. Is there a way to register before arriving? And if not, how long does this process take?
Thank you!

Hi! I was wondering if anyone had any experience visiting the park in rainy season? We are pretty keen on hiking but we find ourselves in Colombia in April, which is supposed to be the rainiest month of the year, and were wondering whether the park would still be worth a visit? Any input would be awesome! We will be in Colombia for a month so we could possibly come back later in the month if forecasts are looking better. Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
I am planning to attend El Cocuy in June and was wondering how many days you would recommend in order to complete two of the hikes. So far, I have planned three days in the area (one in the town El Cocuy, and two for hiking), but I worry this may not be enough time. Any help and advice is truly appreciated :)
Regards,
Braelin

Hi Braelin
First of all, welcome to our beautiful country! By June the weather will be better (hopefully!). The little and beautiful town of El Cocuy can be visited in just a couple of hours, there’s not much to it. To climb, you need to make reservations at 7 am, the spaces to go up to any of the paths are limited, so you need to be there very punctual at 7am, you also need to have a guide as this is a requirement to enter any National Natural Park.
Now it would depend where you’re coming from and how much you’re planning to do: if you’re coming from a place that is on the sea level, you would need one entire day to stay in town before attempting to climb as it is very high (4600 mts above the sea level), if you are used to living in high places, then it’d be up to you, but natives always recommend one day. (I’m from Bogotá which is 2600 mts and I was fine, never got mountain sickness, but people from other cities in Colombia that are lower, they got headaches and other symptoms)
Regarding the actual climbing: you need one day per path, so it would depend how much you want to do and your physical condition. I made reservation for two paths, but after the first climbing I was too exhausted to climb the second, so I lost that money. I took the path to go to the Laguna Grande, it was an exhausting climbing but it was worth it, you need to climb up for 6 hours but it’s not very steep, then go back down for 3 hours. The other path that is called Ritacuba (Ritak U’wa) is a little shorter in terms of time (it’s done in 7 hours up and down) but it’s more difficult as it is more steep and rocky. Everybody says this one is better because, although is more difficult, the views are fantastic, you really get to be next to the glaciers and see more snow (which for us Colombians is really unique) than in the Laguna Grande.
So, three days would be little time if you plan to take the two or more paths, but if you take only one (maybe Ritacuba) then the 3 days would be fine, but you need to keep in mind that making the reservations is not that easy: you need to be at 7 am with the guide (you pay for the guide and you pay to enter the park) and then most of the spaces are taken for the next day (let alone the very same day you arrive) so you need to make reservations today to climb the day after tomorrow, and this is done in other little town called Güican, not in EL Cocuy. Keep that in mind!
If you have any questions about anything there, let me know. I’ll be happy to help!
Regards,
Astrid W.
