‪At first, I thought there was roadwork being done, until we pulled over to read about this twisted mess. Very interesting. On the way back, we saw some adults sliding down it.‬

‪This is simply a pair of twisted pieces of metal from the old bridge with graffiti on them. Whilst a reminder of a tragic geological event, can't see what the fuss is about.‬

‪The Skeiðará Bridge Monument is an extraordinary sight indeed. We stopped here on our way back from our visit to Jökulsárlón; it’s about 130 kilometres east of Vík í Mýrdal, on the main highway which circumnavigates Iceland. What the sight conveys is the extreme power of the natural elements which are part and parcel of life in Iceland. Twisted girders are all that remain of an Icelandic bridge that was wiped out by a combination of volcanic heat and glacial floods. The force of the destruction of the natural elements on seemingly immovable man-made structures such as this is just mind blowing!

This little-known monument is made up of the remnants of the Skeiðará Bridge. Once the longest span in Iceland, the Skeiðará Bridge comprised a portion of the Icelandic ring road. The bridge carried drivers across the Skeiðarár Sandur, a wide plain of black volcanic sand marbled with creeks from the run-off of the Skeiðarárjökull glacier, one of Vatnajökull’s many outlet glaciers. Skeiðarárbrú was the final part of Route 1, the Ring Road, to be completed. The bridge was taken into use in 1974. In 1996, the volcano Vatnajökull, which sat beneath Skeiðarárjökull, erupted, melting portions of the glacier and creating massive floods. While the girder bridge was built to withstand a hefty amount of flood waters, there was no preparing for the house-sized icebergs that the floods washed down the plain. A number of these glacial boulders crashed into the bridge, wiping it out and creating a gap in the main ring road around Iceland. It’s been said that some of these floating ice boulders were the size of two-story houses.

All that remains of the original bridge today are two twisted girders by the side of the new road. They form a unique monument to the lovely but powerful beauty of Iceland’s natural landscape.  There’s a really interesting information board there to provide insight into the history of this incredible memorial and the unbelievable power of nature in the land of ice and fire.

As you appreciate the monument, your eyes will no doubt be drawn to the breathtaking scenery beyond. Both Skeiðarárjökull and another glacier, Svinafellsjökull, are visible in the distance, offering stunning views to those who visit.

This is a ‘must do’ stop if you are travelling Route 1. Do not miss it!‬

‪I think the main reason to stop is to read the big information boards which tell you a bit more about the region. The monument is good to see at the same time.‬

‪Everything in Iceland is worth learning about. But this is more of an oddity that explains the vagaries of time and weather and geology. Our guide gave us a running commentary so we just glanced at it as we went by.‬

‪Without knowing too much about this monument, it was a stark contrast to see hunks of metal jutting from rocks in a desolate area.‬

‪The disfigured metal structures of the bridge demonstrate the terrible power of nature. The bridge was demolished by a glacier in 1996. Slowly but surely. Inch by inch. Creepy, but very informative...‬
