We looked for the hide but were informed that it had been damaged and was no longer in use. We were given good advice at the I Site centre in Twizel on where to look for Black Stilts.

Lured in by an enthusiastic guide book that said there were observation hides, we assumed this was the place where we had a reasonable chance to see this rare bird, knowing that sightings entirely depend on luck. However, we were not prepared to see only birds in captivity. And yes, there were observation hides. But tell me, is there anything more pathetic than looking through binoculars at caged birds from behind the glass of a hide? The entrance fee was not at all expensive, but we lost valuable time here.

The facility is mainly for the conservation work, and the tours are an educational add-on rather than the main purpose of the hide. The tour certainly educated me about the state of the Kaka, and was very interesting and varied. I wish it had been made a little easier to photograph the captive birds, however.

Shirley was a wealth of information on our one hour tour around the kaki visitor hide. We got the opportunity to hear more about why they are endangered, the conservation effort which is underway to save these quirky and charismatic birds, as well as view some stilts which are part of their captive / re-introduction programme. If you like wildlife, then this tour is a must.

Interesting to hear about the attempt to reintroduce the Kaki. Also to see the birds so that when we saw one in the wild it was easy to identify. FYI - it was on a small marshy/pond by the side of the main road in Lake Tekapo

We took a tour of the kaki/black stilt viewing hide in Twizel. The kaki is an endangered wading bird, so the tour is an overview of the bird and an opportunity to see the work that the Department of Conservation is doing for bird protection. After an introduction, we were brought into a secure area where we were able to see a couple of injured birds up close. After a video presentation and explanations from the docent, then we were brought into an area where we could see a number aviaries in the distance (with binoculars provided) to see the bird. To me, it's not a must see, even if you're in the area, but of interest, especially if you're interested in wildlife.
