‪On a mission trip to Haiti in the early 80's, (wasn't able to select that date from the pulldown menu) this was one of the "breaks" we took on one day of sight seeing. Wow. We took a taptap (riding on TOP of a VW Microbus) to the Citadelle, then took the ride on a mule up the steep narrow mountain path. Absolutely worth taking time to see.‬

‪Absolutely breathtaking. The road there is long but the natives helped me on a horse named Panama. Gave everyone 500 goudes each for the help ($6USD) my guide there was so knowledgeable and knew so much! The place is MASSIVE and absolutely beautiful ‬

‪Close to the sky, situated on the top of the mountain, this fortress is breathtaking. For athletic visitors is an excelent choice to walk to the top (around 40 min), but you can also ride the horses. The ideal is to go with a guide so you can know the history importance of this monument that Is a must to visit The Citadelle.
It was recognised by UNESCO as a protected site in 1982, and is still the largest fort in the Americas.‬

‪The Citadelle is also known as Citadelle Henri Christophe. It is located at the top of mountain Bonnet a L’Eveque, which is 950 meters high. Public transportation goes as far as Milot, so it is probably best to arrange a guide to reach the fort. The narrow road leading to the fort is 6.3 km in length, and starts at the Sans Souci Palace site. The first four kilometers can be driven in a 4WD vehicle or bus. The many bike taxis in the village are also an option for the braver tourist. The road ends at a car park which has bathroom facilities and gift shops.

At this section, the road narrows but can be navigated by bike taxis, horses or on foot. A sign to the left states "Site de Ramiers" 2.64 km, which is a small fort just beyond the main structure. The path is in good condition, but will be dangerous for bikes if wet, as it is very slippery. The walk will be difficult if you are not used to trekking, as there are areas which are quite steep. If you are not used to trekking, there are horses available at an additional charge.

There are two smaller fortification structures on your right as you walk towards the main fortress. On reaching the main fortress a few canons are on display outside, but the main weapons are inside the double wooden gates. On entering the gates, a chapel is to the left. This building now houses generators and other equipment for the maintenance of the fort. As you climb up to the next level, the vast array of canon balls are displayed. This will give an appreciation of the work which was involved in hauling all these weapons to the top of the mountain. The canons all have 18th century dates which are still clearly seen.

The fortress was closed on the day, and rain fell throughout our trek to the top, which made taking photos almost impossible. Due to the rain and fog, we couldn't experience the spectacular views which this site is famous for. We hope to return in better weather to experience the interior of the fortress and the spectacular views. After defeating the French in 1804, Emperor Dessalines tasked his Liuetenant, Henri Christophe, with constructing the fortress on Peak Laferrière. Henri was familiar with the terrain, having worked on a farm in Milot. The architect was Henry Barré, but Henri was intimate with all details of the construction. The fort was built between 1805-1820.

The fort is approximately 10,000 m2, and has walls 3 m wide and over 30 m in height. Over 2,000 soldiers could be comfortably accommodated. Look out for the wide drainage areas leading away from the fort, which could also be used as secret passageways to stealthily move soldiers. The fort originally had 365 cannons, but many of these have been removed. The ammunition supplies appear to have remained intact from 1820 when King Henri died. It was recognised by UNESCO as a protected site in 1982, and is still the largest fort in the Americas. The fort was never used in battle, has survived many earthquakes and was last renovated in the 1980's.‬

‪This place is great for people who love adventure, considering it’s located on one of the highest mountain in the island. It’s great for visiting with friends and family members.‬

‪Amazing architecture and history. To learn this part of the Americas history astonished me. The blood, sweat and death that went into building this fortress... Wow. A great workout for those who want to walk the trail. Definitely a hidden gem‬

‪Up on the north side of the country in Cap Haitien lies the greatest architecture feat in the country- the immense Citadelle fortress built by the French to protect the area.. with no guard rails or fences, you can easily fall 2000 feet to your death if you lean too far over the edge so be careful! It takes a good healthy walk up the switchback path, and the locals have a way of cutting straight up to set up vendor tables when they hear people are coming and see vehicles approaching. Amazing! A couple thousand men lost their lives erecting the unfinished structure up on top of the highest peak, and you can see for miles! Afterwards head to Cormier Plage beach or Labadie resort up in the coast!‬

‪In the north of Haiti is the most wonderful historical monument of the country. Built and inhabited by King Henri christophe, after the division of the country, the citadel remains and remains the greatest wonder of all times for the Haitians. It is a plain fortress of secrecy. You who want to travel a little in time, I propose you a small guided visit to the citadel. You will not be disappointed.
