It is part of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour. As a result, even if you have a ticket that includes all the museums in Gosport and the Historic Dockyards in Portsmouth, you still have to go to the museum ticket office for an appointment. The bad part is this is not written anywhere... and I found it out only after standing in line for about 10 minutes at the access stairs to the submarine, right after we got off the waterbus that brought us from Portsmouth.
Anyway, I lost some time but I got over it.
Access is done in relatively small groups, but, in my opinion, still a bit too big for how tight the place is. If you want to take pictures (as was my case) you have to stay a little behind the group, otherwise you won't be able to get an OK frame because of the crowding. The problem is that, in this case, you lose out on interesting explanations. In addition, you are also pressed by the next group, which comes from behind.
Anyway, the visit is well worth it, it's very interesting!

We got left behind in a group of people visiting HMS Alliance and it really paid off! We ended up with our own personal tour with a wonderfully knowledgeable man, Rob. We got to see how the powerful supercharged 8-cylinder diesel engine worked and even got to look through the periscope! We got a real insight into how the sub worked and how the crew lived and worked out at sea. Although a visit to Alliance only takes about 40 minutes we both really enjoyed it. We have Ultimate Explorer tickets and we both agree that HMS Alloance and HMS Warrior are our top 2 attractions. Thanks Rob for your time and expertise, it really made our visit on board amazing. Sadly, Trip Advisor won’t let me add my photos so you’ll have to go see it for yourself!

Really interesting guided tour of the submarine. The two tour guides were excellent - one was Doug, didn't catch the name of the other man.
HMS Alliance is kept in a lovely condition.
We went as a family with two children - 6yr & 1yr old. The submarine is NOT buggy/pram friendly at all. We were expecting this, so baby went into a sling for the trip. I wouldn't do this trip with only very young children (under 5yrs).
Busy Boats Bay nearby at the Submarine Museum site was great for the children to play in afterwards.

Very interesting and informative. Very knowledgeable and entertaining guides who themselves are ex submariners. It was enjoyable, but at the same time concerning as the conditions were obviously tough. The young children lived through the telescope etc., so yes I would recommend it totally. There is a lot to see so come prepared !

Although not physically located within Portsmouth Historic dockyard, The A class diesel electric submarine, ‘HMS Alliance’ is for me, after my visit, the prime attraction.
She is located across the water from Portsmouth, in Gosport, very close to the old ‘HMS Dolphin’ diesel electric submarine base.
Our politicians don’t allow the Royal Navy to have any diesel electric submarines these days, or pretty much any submarines for that matter, so the base closed in 2002 I believe.
Alliance was placed on order during WW2, but was not delivered until 1947.
Her design was focused on the requirement for fast surface transits in the Indian ocean/Far east theatres.
Once you are inside Alliance the mind boggles as to how complex this machine is.
Valves, pipes, and gauges are simply everywhere.
The crew accommodation is insanely cramped, and the bunks were tiny.
Considering she had a crew of over 60, the galley was miniscule.
How the crews lived cheek by jowl for weeks on end is beyond me.
The switch gear and engine compartment must have been deafeningly loud, incredibly hot, and very dangerous to work in.
The diesel engines themselves are massive.
The control room was very impressive, and has some very antiquated electronic systems, such as a radar.
She has two periscopes, a binocular search periscope, and a monocular attack periscope.
I believe only the captain was allowed to look through the attack periscope.
She has both forward and aft torpedo tubes, and could also sow anti ship mines.
Incredibly, she stayed underwater for thirty days in 1947, during tests of the ‘snort mast’.
This was a system which let air into the boat, and expelled the diesel fumes.
Alliance faced disaster in the mid 2000s, as she was suffering from severe corrosion damage, but after fundraising efforts, and a Heritage fund lottery grant, she was saved.
She is a monument to all the RN sailors who lost their lives in submarines, and is a magnificent testament to their memory.
She is a must see.

Well worth the short ferry over from the main historic dockyard
A great way to experience what life is about onboard a submarine
Gives a true insight and feeling
Like all attractions apart of the historic dockyard, it's very well maintained

We were in a group of 24 that toured the submarine but that was twice as many people as there should be in such cramped conditions. The tour guide was excellent but when he was explaining things in the Control Room some folk were stuck in a queue in the corridor and couldn’t hear never mind see what was going on. The young man on the desk in the visitor centre was not sympathetic and offered no apology.

Great visit and made more special by the knowledgeable staff, who had served at sea in a submarine

Fantastic visit. Great to see inside the submarine, but what made it really special is the people that work there. The people inside the submarine where really knowledgeable and served at sea on a submarine.

A very well presented vessel & tour, shown round by an ex submariner, a typical ex submariner. If you know, you know 😁⚓️didn’t have time to visit the museum as it was near closing time

This was an opportunity to see what life was like on a WW2 submarine. Our guides were ex- submariners who brought the whole experience to life with their stories of a tough life in submarines. A truly fascinating experience.

On behalf of a former HMS Alliance submariner, can any one tell me if there are any 'reunions or special days' planned for Alliance veteran?
