Lovely little gem out of the way and quite special.
Worth a visit if you don’t mind the walk through some overgrown areas and a narrow rough path with some undulation. Couldn’t take buggy through but left it with husband and then we switched.
Beautiful shells mostly crushed but such an unusual place with interesting colours and all varieties of shell.

We both enjoy a walk along a beach and my wife “collects” shells which are strategically placed in parts of our house and garden so it seemed a good idea to visit Shell Beach when we disembarked from the car ferry at Tarbert.
We had a little difficulty finding it at first since my research hadn’t extended into too much detail. Drive along the shore road to the left of the pier and you’ll find it. There was a turning point at the end of the shore road but no obvious parking in what is a quiet residential area. A bench and some information about the local wildlife and nature but nothing about shell beach. Luckily a passing dog walker was able to direct us up a slope to the right which disappeared into the shrubbery. I parked the car as close to the edge of the road as possible to avoid causing an obstruction.
Part of the way along the track it diverged in several directions all of which were boggy in the extreme. I volunteered to venture further to see what the situation was and with my hiking boots caked in mud I reached a little opening in the bushes with a rocky outlook over the water and a small cove covered in shells. I guessed this must be it, but could it be so small? I went a little further over some rocks and discovered another section of cove with a bench overlooking the scene which convinced me this was it. Having then followed yet another track back to where my wife was I thought it would be simple just to retrace these steps. Not so - one boggy track in the bushes looks much like another but anyway we got to Shell Beach.
It’s certainly unusual the way that some of the shells have stacked upright between the rocks and there are loads of shells covering the shore but there were not many good specimens for my wife’s collection as many were broken. It provided 20 minutes of exploring, care being required near the water’s edge where the rocks were extremely slippy, but eventually some worthy shells were found so my wife was pleased.
We later discovered from a relative who lives in the area that there used to be a processing factory for scallops and other shellfish and it was the waste product from here, the shells dumped at sea and washed back, which had created “Shell Beach” many years ago.
Worth a look in dry conditions.

I didn't realise this tiny wee beach of crushed shells had a name! It's a nice wee spot and a bit unusual given it comprises of little bits of shell but given Scotland's other top notch beaches, it's just a nice small cove to wander to of an evening.Tarbert's a pretty wee place and this makes for an easy stroll at the end of the road beyond the pier.

It’s right at the end of Pier Road where there isn’t a lot of parking but I was there very early in the morning and so I had the place to myself. I didn’t expect the track to be quite as up and down as it was but I managed fine (I had my hiking boots on thankfully) and to be honest that was the most enjoyable part because the beach itself is very small. I would recommend it though just to say you have done it!

Climbing over the boulders is the most fun way but don't worry if you're alone here from Massachussets or not a rock climber, you can still get to the beach using what's known as a path. A path is like a road or track but for people or animals. Finding the path may require use of eyes and some brain function but to most mammals will be very easy to find. Great beaches, who would have though fly (or shell) tipping would create such beauty. A real gem.

What an amazing little beach which is like nothing we have ever seen before. Millions of shells are everywhere. How they all accumulate here and nowhere else nearby is a mystery but this place is a must see. Not the easiest of places to find or access but we'll worth the effort. It's about 100 metres from the seat at the end of Pier Road. Look for a path up through the vegetation and trees or clamber over the rocks. Not a trek for the infirm unfortunately and be sure to wear decent footwear.

We were lucky enough to visit Tarbert in mid-August when it was extremely hot, fantastic weather.
We followed our noses and walked up past the car ferry point and continued up the road to the very end, where there is a bench and a small memorial for some ‘lost at sea’ sailors.
My daughter and I felt the urge to scale the coastal rocks here and were rewarded by finding Shell Beach - we then worked our way back to the rest of our party via the hillside woodland path - it comes out 180 degrees behind the bench/memorial - it’s very hard to see if you don’t know it’s there.
We spent 90mins on this beach as if it were our own private beach and suntrap - absolutely idyllic - don’t miss it, one of our holiday highlights!

Walk to as far as road goes from harbour and take little footpath near the clear DO NOT SIGN. Walk through wood and you emerge to a pink twinkly beach. Even on a rainy dull day the beach has a lovely glow to it. Worth a peep. Take a picnic if nice weather it is really quite special. The short walk has a few boulders, muddy path and steps to negotiate so not for people with mobility issues.
