Captain Kenny and first mate Jimmy took our party of 10 out to witness the whale sharks and we had a fantastic day. All 10 in our party were able to swim with a whale shark. Captain Kenny has done this many times and Captains from other boats call him on the radio to find the whale sharks. He is also skilled at getting the boat into the proper position so that you can easily slide into the water and swim alongside the whale sharks.

July 14, we experienced a stormy day (not Holbox's fault) that resulted in not seeing the whale sharks. It was a downpour but the tour operator insisted it would be fine. Even the boat mate admitted it was a very bad idea to even go out that day. Once the rain started the whales went below the surface and they can't be seen. Because of the rain and very rough seas we were allowed to jump in the water for less than a minute then ordered out of the water. We were promised to be able to get in at least four times but that never happened. The captain decided to abort the remainder of the trip canceling the snorkeling tour off Isla Mujeras and the lunch and headed directly back to the dock where we were unceremoniously dropped off and left to wait at least 11/2 hours for a ride back to our hotels. Holbox Tours guarantees you see whale sharks or you receive a refund. Holbox refused to refund the $150 per person price of the tour. We were cheated and lied to and the representative continues to be rude and unethical just as he was on the dock when we all requested refunds. Here's how they get you- You make a deposit on Paypal then pay the rest in person in cash- that way they can keep the cash without any credit card protection. It is absolutely unconscionable the way we were treated.

Tenía mucha ilusión en hacer la excursón del tiburón ballena, y contacté con HOLBOXTRAVEL, quienes me hicieron la reserva y me dijeron que no tenían competencia en cuanto a calidad y relación calidad/precio (135 USD). Cuando me llevaron en el transporte a Puerto Juárez me di cuenta de que no era Holboxtravel quien hacía directamente la excursión, sino otra compañía subcontratada, por tanto todo lo que me habían dicho de que su lancha era la más rápida, de que te dejaban tirarte las veces que quisieras, etc, etc, no era la realidad. Llegamos cuando había ya no menos de 30 embarcaciones en el lugar, y fuimos de los primeros en irnos. Nos dejaron tirarnos 3 veces, de las cuales en una no logré ver nada ya que no se coordinaron entre el capitán y el guía. La última vez que me tiré ya si estuvo bien, iba yo sólo (sin guía, mejor porque más bien estorbaba que ayudar) y nadé un buen rato con un tiburón, pero quería estar unos minutos más con otro que estaba muy cerca, y no me dejaron, me dijeron que se iban (los de Holboxtravel me aseguraron que nunca meten prisa a la gente y no se van hasta que todos han quedado satisfechos por el precio pagado, que no fue nuestro caso). En resumen, NO recomiendo Holboxtravel para el tour del Tiburón Ballena.

My wife and i are frequent travelers to the caribbean. I know that when you read reviews online you need to read between the lines sometimes so i will stick to a couple of reasons to AVOID Mextreme travel. When we booked the trip with David there was a sign at his storefront in town that said "WE SPEAK ENGLISH!" David spoke english but when we got to the boat neither of the two crew spoke a word of english. This wasn't a huge deal since i was more or less prepared for the trip and there is a sign on the boat to instruct you how to interact with the sharks. It did however become more important when the boat broke down out at sea. The battery died, so i thought they would radio in for help. It was at that point i figured out that there was no radio on the boat!! We sat for over 2 hours drifting, waving towels and life jackets trying to signal for help but there were no other boats, or land in sight. After sitting for 2.5 hours or so, the captain tried to start the boat again and i guess the battery had regenerated enough to start it this time and we headed back. I can understand that mechanical issues can arise but the fact that they had no radio on board and no plan in case of emergency is the reason why i would NOT recommend going out with Mextreme. There are other more reputable companies that will take you out in a much safer boat. We went out later in the week with Hotel Mawimbi and had an excellent day with them.

Hi Snorkeler, that was your story. Now, let me tell you mine. First of all I believe that if in front of my Office there is written "WE SPEAK ENGLISH" this does not mean that the fishermen with whom we work do as well. However, I am happy that you survived to this nightmer but let me tell you that your life was never in danger like it seems if I read between the lines. It was a bad day for you, your wife, for the fishermen and for all the crew and tourists on board. This does not allow you to generalize to us, as an agency. We are intermediaries only, we select our boats yearly, following every year improved standards. The boats that do this activity have particular licences and have the permission of the Government because found to be in good shape and fullfill the requirements asked. We work mainly with fishermen because they are the one knowing the most. All their boats, like said before, have the necessary standards, permits and insurances requested. God is out there but "s..t" happens anyway sometimes. That time was your turn, next time may be mine. I am sorry for that but I have no regrets about our job, because we always give our best and many time we reach good results. Mextreme Travel is a project, and like all projects it has its problems. Hope you'll give us another chance and try our services once again to show you that the bad trip you had was just an exception. Take care and thank you anyway. Sincerely, David

The whale shark tour was well organized, started from 7:30 am, finished at 2:30 p.m. It took 1h of boat ride to reach the whale shark area, then it took us probably one hour more to spot the whale sharks (their fins are hardly visible from distance). After we found them each of us could swam 2 times with the sharks, easch divelasted from 1- 5 minutes - it depends how quickly the shark was swiming, since you can hardly follow him. You are so slose to the shark you can touch him, which of course you shouldn't. I am very grateful for a 3rd dive with the whale shark, which everybody was permitted, who wanted it. After the whale sharsk we took also a short snorkeling in vicinity. We also saw a manta ray, dolpihes, turtle and nurse sharks at snorkelling spot. If it was possible I could spend even more time with the whale sharks, maybe the snorkelling is not that important and could be omitted. But in general it was AMAZING, to me a highlight of my trip in mexico (and I've been travelling for 1 month around Yucatan and Chiapas)

Davide Rimoldi helped me plan my 50th b-day trip for myself and 6 friends, and it was fantastic. 2 whale shark excursions...unbelievable...including many close encounters with these beautiful animals, plus manta rays and dolphins. Another day we netted baitfish, then caught bigger fish which the captain and helper made into the freshest most delicious ceviche lunch ever. We snorkled, swam in freshwater cenotes, totally enjoyed the tranquility of the island. We were all very satisfied and loved his service and recommendations.

Having just returned after a week on Holbox Island and read the only other review on Mextreme, my wife and I had a totally different experience during wildlife/ nature day trips organised by the company.
This included three whale-shark watching trips and a number of other excursions. We have been taking wildlife tours longer than we care to remember and have always found that when it comes to wildlife and nature, nothing is guaranteed. It was therefore surprising that in early June, when the whale sharks are only just arriving in small numbers, on all three occasions we found whale-sharks. Admittedly they were shared with one or two other boats but this was not a problem as, unless you are a strong swimmer, you will not be able to keep up for very long anyway and the boats take turns to put two people in the water (the maximum permitted with each whale-shark).
The boatmen and guides that Mexreme used were all local, and although they spoke limited English, their effort to find the whale-sharks and help you when in the water, has to be admired. To drop in the water, look down and see these magnificent creatures glide past a few feet away, is a fantastic experience. The fact that we were not strong enough swimmers to keep up for very long meant the experiece was short, but the crew were quite happy to repeat the move as many times as we liked, basically until we were exhausted or the whale sharks went deeper (which they do around midday).
Being an encounter with nature, you have to realise that many things can affect the trips (all three of ours were different and they were only two days apart). Wind can make the water choppy and the whale sharks are more difficult to spot when you are trying to jump in alongside them. Cloudy weather and rain storms up to a day previously can make the plankton layer sink lower in the water and therefore the whale sharks will be well below the surface. Finally that same plankton can make the water cloudy and the whale sharks will quickly disappear from view unless you can keep up, or may even swim close by without you realising it.
On the same trips giant manta rays were spotted and we were able to get in the water alongside them for a brief period before they somersaulted away into the depths. There was also time for a leisurely snorkel over a small reef with some soft coral and colourful fish. (the Great Barrier Reef it isn't, but it made break from chasing the whale-sharks).
These trips lasted about 6-7 hours each and over the three, we were in the water with whale-sharks 12 times and Manta Rays 4 times.
Other trips orginised by Mextreme were affected by prevailing weather or climate conditions but they always did their best make the trips a success. Apart from the whale-sharks, the manta rays and the dolphins, most of Holbox Island and the nearby mainland's attractions are for people who like simple pleasures. Nothing is spectacular, just interesting, but you may have to be patient as nature seldom performs to order. We spent our last evening searching mangroves by torch light for a couple of hours before finding caymen swimming in the shallows just a few feet from the boat. Travelling back to Holbox in total darkness and at high speed across the lagoon, was also a memorable experience, only the distant glow of the town guided our boatman across an area littered with shallows. As I said, simple pleasures, but we enjoyed it. We may have been lucky with our sightings, but at the same time Mextreme were always flexible and tried to adapt the tours to make the most of prevailing weather conditions.

On a recent fishing trip to Holbox with my brother-in-law, we worked with a tour company called Mextreme. In talking with them we lined up both a fishing trip and a trip to swim with the Whale Sharks.
While the Whale Shark experience was okay, they completely screwed us on the fishing trip. David (or Daveed as he said it) promised us that we would be on a decent sized two motor boat, that we would be out trolling for large fish (using fishing rods)and that the tour would include drinks (non-alcoholic) and sandwiches. Unfortunately, we prepaid for this and he took us good.
We showed up at the beach for our big day of fishing only to find a very old, single motor boat that didn't even have a place to put a fishing poll. When we checked the cooler there were no beverages, no sandwiches, no anything. We had to go buy our own stuff and put it in the cooler.
I have to say that the fisherman we went with was VERY good. He did his best to help us have an enjoyable day, but, as you can guess, he didn't work for Mextreme and got the job via his boss.
Unforunately, we didn't have time to go back to the Mextreme office to have it out with David, or whoever was working that day, but the experience we had was awful. They are not trustworhy, they outright lied to us.
I would recommend staying away from this company and looking for another company and trying your luck there. There's another company called Willy's tours that may be a better shot.
I hope this review saves someone from having the experience we had and from wasting good money.

Hi, I am David. Well guys I really don't know who you are but according to my records I don't remember to have had such a bad planning. In any case if I am wrong accept my apologize in advance. Nevertheless, next time please step by to tell us personally your feelings (or what went wrong) so that at least we can do something about it, and not just answering to bad comments, almost offensive in a way, and not even sure if what listed really happened. You know, doing ecoturism creates many ennemies sometime. All kind of weapon are allowed then, when business/interests are touched. Like every project Mextreme Travel will probably need some adjustements/improvemente but I think we are still doing good or at least never so bad and definitely Planning is not our week point, . We believe that there are other people, hopefully the majority, that enjoyed the trip made with us. Our selection of boats has been made between all fishermen, giving a chance to everybody. Only the best ones for the moment are working. We will listen to your comments and apply them in the area where we lack. To keep the same level of quality, people and comments like these are important. Looking forward to see you once again on Holbox. I hope that at least the destination was acceptable :-)
