We heard a lot about the island but it was definitely worth it!! It is a beautiful place, the best beaches in the state, the incredible sea but also changes according to the season, we taste fresh fish in ceviche and lobster of the day fishing in the beach club captain !!! Very good service by the way, super friendly staff!! They bought us some drinks and their snack.
The water eye Yalahau!! Passion Island! Corporal Catoche!!! Woww beautiful!! I would certainly return

Holbox is a paradise that offers a lot, you have to understand that it is a destination of adventure and tranquility, it is the best of the area to rest and undoubtedly has Top-rated sunsets in Mexico. Prices for the stay are not high and there are options for all budgets. Definitely the best plan in Quintana Roo to go as a couple or family.

I visited Holbox for 2 nights in late August 2024 with my fiancé. What the other reviewers have shared is true: the people are very nice, the food is very good.
We flew into Cancun airport, then took a car service (Carm) to the ADO bus station. From there, we took a 2.5 hour bus ride to Chiquila. This was actually quite relaxing, and it was nice seeing a non-touristy area of the Yucatan. Once you arrive in Chiquila, you will walk for about 5 minutes to the ferry terminal and board the ferry to Holbox. When you arrive in Holbox, it's only a minute or two walk to the taxi stand. You could walk from there depending on where you are staying, but many of the roads were impassable because of flooding and sidewalks are pretty much non existent.
We did the sandbar walk, and that was a lot of fun. It's not easy, and takes longer than you would expect so bring sunblock and water.
Unfortunately, we found things quite expensive in Holbox. I'm from NYC and didn't expect to see NYC prices for food and drinks.
The flooded roads were fun to experience on Day 1, but by the 2nd day of having to traverse on narrow curbs, and hop along cinderblocks to avoid the pools of water (and still at times slipping in it) I'd had enough. Sometimes I struggle with mobility due to autoimmune issues, and there were times I found it challenging to get around. This is not an accesible place.
Also, likely because of all the standing water, there were a lot of mosquitoes. Our first night out and about, we were literally swarmed--they bite thru your clothes--and while insect repellent works, who wants to douse themselves all the time with chemicals that melt nail polish. There also seems to be a garbage situation--we randomly came across it in a few places and it didn't seem to be garbage night. But the flies are an issue. You will not eat in peace during the daytime. You will be swatting flies away your entire meal. I found myself rushing thru meals just to get out of the establishment and away from the flies. Again, I'm from NYC. I understand when you eat outside (or "indoors" in this case) you'll have things flying around. This situation was like nothing I've ever experienced in any other part of Mexico, and I've been to the Yucatan at least 10 times and Cabo/Puerto Vallarta 3 times.
One thing to note, because of limited septic system you can't flush your soiled toilet paper. It's not the biggest deal (it actually helped me be mindful of how much paper I was using) but it is something to be aware of.
All in all, I'm glad I came, but given the schlep to get there, combined with the flying insect situation and flooded roads, I likely won't be back.

Holbox is a great place and we loved it but it does struggle with infrastructure and price challenges. We have been coming yo Playa Tulum and this area since the late 90’s but this was our first time here. Relaxed and beautiful beaches. But expensive for what it is. And if you stay in town there are some issues with garbage and sewage smells when the streets flood. Overall we liked it a lot, great food and beaches. but we suggest you stay in a place with a pool as the ocean in July Aug is like a warm bath so not easy to cool off

I wouldn't waste time and money visiting him. There are so many better places in Mexico.
Very murky water, with algae all the way, except where it does not cover, but it was murky. There are hardly any birds. Flamingos seem to prefer another place and there are very few and far between, as it is bounded. The beach where we were, is nothing otherworldly. Pity time and money wasted. It was nothing like the videos I had seen about the place.

Holbox 🇲🇽❤️
Holbox is a wonderful island separated from Mexico by a narrow lagoon of turquoise waters inhabited by flamingos. In addition, it is one of the most beautiful destinations of the Riviera Maya and one of the must-see places in Mexico. Walking through the island, we see an impressive natural environment formed by the typical idyllic beaches of the Caribbean, virtually untouched by man. In the only inhabited area, residents enjoy the Caribbean rhythm in colorful houses and straw ceilings, where a welcoming and cheerful atmosphere reigns that makes us fall in love with this place.
One of the points that gives a more bohemian and quiet character to Holbox is that there are virtually no cars: we walk, cycle or golf cart. Walking around the island, you get to live with the local fishermen as we walk through quiet white sandy streets full of music. The garment store all over Holbox?! Bikini and barefoot!

Holbox Island, Mexico - A Mixed Bag with Beautiful Beaches and Rough Roads
Holbox Island, located about three hours from Cancun, Mexico, offers a unique travel experience that left me with mixed feelings. While the island is known for its stunning beaches and warm, welcoming locals, there were several aspects of the trip that made it my least favorite destination in Mexico.
First, the island’s charm is somewhat diminished by its challenging infrastructure. Holbox doesn’t have cars, so the primary modes of transportation are on foot or via golf cart-style taxis. While this might sound quaint, the reality is far from it. The roads are all sand and dirt, and many sections are frequently flooded, turning the island into a muddy mess. The bumpy rides on four-wheeler-style golf carts were so rough that I felt like I needed a chiropractic adjustment after every trip. The condition of the roads was easily the worst I’ve ever experienced, and it significantly detracted from the overall enjoyment of getting around the island.
The town itself has a typical Mexican tourist vibe, with vendors hustling to make a sale at every corner. While I respect the need to earn a living, the constant pressure to spend money everywhere I went was overwhelming and gave the island a less-than-relaxing atmosphere. Compared to other places I’ve visited in Mexico, Holbox lacked the charm that usually makes me want to return.
That said, the island isn’t without its highlights. The beaches are undeniably beautiful, with white sands and warm, clear waters that were perfect for swimming. Beach time was one of the few truly enjoyable aspects of the trip, and the cleanliness of the beaches was impressive compared to the rest of the island.
The food was another bright spot. Every meal we had was delicious, and the people we encountered were kind, friendly, and eager to make our stay enjoyable. Despite the general hustle, the locals’ warmth made a positive impact.
However, the city itself leaves much to be desired in terms of cleanliness. Trash was a common sight, which was disappointing and somewhat diminished the natural beauty of the island.
Timing was another issue. Visiting in August was a mistake, as the heat was nearly unbearable. The air conditioning in our hotel struggled to keep our room at a tolerable temperature, making our stay uncomfortable. I would strongly advise against visiting Holbox during the hottest months unless you’re well-prepared for the heat.
One logistical note: getting to Holbox involves either taking a ferry or a private taxi boat. The private boats are small, with basic outboard engines that make for a rough ride over, which may not be the most pleasant experience for everyone.
On a more positive note, one of the highlights of our trip was the opportunity to swim with whale sharks, a seasonal activity in the area. At $130 per person, the tour was a bit pricey but well worth it for the once-in-a-lifetime experience of seeing these magnificent creatures up close.
In summary, while Holbox Island has its beautiful moments, particularly the beaches and the local cuisine, the overall experience was marred by poor infrastructure, overwhelming heat, and the constant hustle of the tourist areas. For me, Holbox is definitely a "one and done" destination. If you’re looking for a more relaxing and charming Mexican getaway, I’d recommend exploring other options.

The excursion to Holbox includes, a cenote (is very bad) 30cm of water, very ugly, luckily it is short. From there you go to passion island and mosquito tip, beautiful the 2 places. Then the island is totally beautiful, the bars are not so expensive and having a drink you can enjoy its beach. Ideally spend at least one night there, Rondan 100usd a night, highly recommended to visit this place.

Does it rain a lot in August? I’m worried we are picking a bad time to visit.

Hello, we were just in Holbox for 2 weeks in August and the weather was great. It was hot and it rained a little bit here and there in a tropical manner. Small showers here and there. But there was a tropical storm in Late July which we missed luckily. But Aug and Sept are potentially hurricane season so good to have insurance and or flex tickets

Is there a way to get to the island after ferry hours? Taxi boats?
كُتب بتاريخ 31 مارس 2022
Hello , yes this is Mexico so everything is possible for a price. It’s only a 30 minute ride. We took a motor boat from Holbox back to the mainland for the same price as the ferry as there were 5 of us. So there are always captains around to take you. If you come very late this may be more difficult

What is the situation with seaweed now in mid April 2021?!
Also are there any places where we can swim in the ocean or is it shallow all along the beaches?

I’ve just returned from 2 weeks Cancun-Playa del Carmen-Tulum vacation.
But I have not been to Holbox. However there is at least light Sargassum season already, as I heard.
Especially south of Cancun to Tulum and further south, there is plenty of it every day & expected to be even more in the more unstable weather season coming up.
(Besides it’s getting worse every year, unfortunately - it’s a widely known manmade problem->>>>>
I just watched youtube videos from news channels: It’s a world problem only in the beginning but already having massive negative influence on many areas of the Caribbean and marine life!!)
I have been starting posting some environmental things, also concerning that, on Instagram : hanzthepilot
We have to make a change and involve politics - it’s vital !!!
