A long and arduous hike, but well worth it for. the insane views and almost lunar landscape! They have a number of toilets along the trail. and it is well maintained. Bear in mind that it can get very busy and it is best to get there as early as possible!!

Bellissimo

Its a tough old walk, so be prepared. Weather can also change rapidly. Be sure to bring lunch, snacks, water, warm clothes (layers) and comfortable shoes.

I ended up doing the hike solo when my husband and hiking partner fell ill during our trip. I'm a 50-something woman in decent but not awesome shape, and I hike only a few times per year. I did train for several months ahead of this hike, and you do want to be in reasonably fit condition to do it. The trip to the summit has some rocky sections and some steps. Coming down, there's a tricky scree field; poles recommended. The long descent was perhaps the hardest part for me and my tired legs. But the views and challenge of it all made the effort well worth it.

This was an amazing experience. I am very happy to have done this....however...it was harder than expected. I'm not in terrible shape, but I am in my late 50's.
We started early...we were on the 6:30 shuttle and started our walk around 7. The sun was just starting to rise and the temperature was cool. Layers are definitely a necessity for this walk! I will break this walk down into the sections.
The first 4-5 km are relatively easy. Definitely not flat, uphill in some parts, but not taxing. There was not as much boardwalk as I had anticipated. There are washrooms at the start, about 20 min. in, and at the bottom of the next section.
The next section is the "Devil's Staircase". It is 384 stairs ( I counted) with inclined path between the stair sections. It was hard, but we took it slowly and rested when needed.
The crater floor was flat and really interesting. Wonderful views of "Mount Doom". Only 21/2 hours in on the walk by now. I am a terribly slow walker, so other people would be ahead by this point.
The next section was the hardest climb. You traverse up a steep section of the crater edge. It is slippery and narrow in sections. It didn't take that long, but it was tough.
At the top of this section you can see the summit. You are walking up a lip of the crater. The red crater on one side and a drop-off on the other. It was pretty wide, so I didn't feel nervous. Finally...the summit! It was pretty windy and some clouds had come in, but it was a beautiful view.
Coming down there is 200-300 m of loose shale. Very difficult. I "skied" down as best I could. My legs were shaking by the bottom.
Walking across the next crater bottom was lovely. Nice views from every direction. There is another small climb and then you walk along the blue lake. Just around the corner...there are another set of washrooms.
Then....the endless downhill. Probably 9? km of endless downhill. The first part is not particularly groomed, so you have to watch your step. Then.....on and on switchbacks. Just steep enough that you knew your knees would be sore by the end. (There are 2 washroom stops on this section). The view doesn't change.... I finally put on my airpods and let everyone pass me.
The last 45 minutes is in the forest. A little undulating here. I kept thinking that it must be over around each corner. Very happy to see the parking lot at the end. Our car was parked about 1 km away. My legs were shaking by the end.
My watch said 24.5 km, 149 flights of stairs, and 38 000 steps.
My long legged husband could have done this is 51/2 -6 hours. It took me over 71/2.
It is a definite must do in New Zealand. Just be prepared.

Were slightly apprehensive about the walk, but it exceeded all expectations.
Path was well defined. There was one very steep section, but the rest was very manageable for a couple in their 50's/60's who do a lot of walking.
The weather was great at the start and finish, but very foggy in the middle section which meant we couldn't see the lakes.
Views on the second half of the walk were amazing.
We started the walk at 8am and it was busy at the start, but everyone was soon quite spread out and it didn't feel too busy at all. It was reassuring on the steep foggy section to know there were other people around.
Make sure you read the details of what you need to carry with you. It was a fairly cool day and we still drank more than a litre of water each, so make sure your carry at least 2 litres per person.
You will also need hat and gloves even on a late summer day.

Great walk! I highly recommend this walk for all New Zealanders to do. Bucket list stuff for sure!!Can’t believe it’s free to do and that the track is still in great shape…. Plenty of overseas tourists enjoying it which is great to see.

Weather was perfect. Blue sky with hardly any clouds. It took me six and a half hours to complete but this included 25 minutes for lunch and 2 toilet stops. Highly recommend.

I did the tour alone.
The rest of my group walked to the soda spring and met me at the end of my tour.
Weather was fine, sunny, over 23 °C.
You really have to take 1,5 - 2 ltr to drink with you and a snack.
The way down is long and nerve-racking. Be prepared for long sections and thousands of steps at those stairs.
I´m expierienced from average tours in the german mountains (Alpen), so I knew, what to expect.
The most time I wore my trainers for more comfort on those long track sections of stairs and ways with plastic-nets.
Mountaineering boots are mandatory for the last section to the lookout and down to the emerald lakes. (I had those boots in my backpack)
For fit people no need to hurry. You can do it in 6 hours.
I hurried a bit and finished after 4 hours, in time for the rest of my group, that was waiting just some minutes at the parking.
Do you need a guide?
I think no. Just organize your shuttle from/to the parkings. That´s all.....
Do you really have to do this track?
I think no. It´s a great walk, with great impressions, together with really many other people. The way down is annoying, however, and I did other tracks in northern-NZ, that were great, too, without too much hikers around und with better possibilities to talk with the friends or family and so better time together.

what happen if you park more than 4 hour at mangatepopo car park where there is 4 hours parking restriction?

Much easier to book a shuttle, that way you have a ride back to hotel if you make the crossing or if you have to turn back.
Heard they were giving large fines so shuttle would be much cheaper.

In the next few weeks, my partner is going to hike the crossing and I am his drop-off and pick-up person. Can anyone give me ideas of what to do during the day while he is on the track, that is safe for me to do alone? Thank you so much in advance!

I'm planning on coming on 9/4 and just doing the Mangatepopo Valley to Soda Springs trail, would we need any snow gear? Also, would the roads up to the car park require snow chains during that time?
Would you recommend doing a shuttle service?

أتلانتا, جورجيا107 مساهمات
I cannot tell you about snow because we just visited New Zealand and don't know much about weather there. We visited the area in March this year and we booked the shuttle service from Taupo, Service was good and on time and I would do it again the same way.
Considering doing the hike around the 10th Jan 2020- has anyone done the hike in summer? How busy was it? I love hiking but dont want to do the walk if its too busy- would rather choose a quieter one.

It will be busy ...but that should NOT stop you doing it.
It’s one of the worlds great walks and not to be missed .

Yes absolutely. Our gear folded into small packs. We had great weather so we ended up not needing some of layers. But from now on it will b a lot colder up there. lots of snacks and water too.

M not a hiker but want to start from somewhere. So thought maybe I could do the 1ish hour track to start with. So is there anyone could give me some more information about that please? Thanks

There is a start and a finish. You can walk for an hour and turn around but there is no separate track. Most shuttles, if you get one, will pick you up from the start if you cannot make the full journey so I imagine they would return and pick you up if you arranged it with them.

No, con defenderte un poco sirve. Puedes hacer la reserva de los buses por correo. Si te alojas en el car park cercano, ellos lo resuelven todo y hacen las reservas. Es cómodo.

Is there a 4 hour parking restriction at Ketetahi car park or just limited parking spaces? Confused by information I’m reading on websites
Also what time have people experienced the car park being full?
Many thanks

I do recall there being a restriction on parking at the walk start - you’re supposed to park at the other end (where you’ll finish) and take the taxi bus to the start.
