Zou er niet speciaal voor naar IJsland of Gardabaer reizen. Is vrij klein en was tijdens ons bezoek half gevuld. Daardoor ook vrij entree.

This venue is off the beaten track and even with Google Maps took lots of effort and planning. It's in the middle of an out of town non-descript shopping arcade and I walked around aimlessly for 10 minutes eventually asking directions to be told I was at the venue, extremely understated in an Icelandic way :-).
I went for the Kristín Þorkelsdóttir exhibition and the effort was most definitely worth while with a comprehensive and well described exposition of the artists career, highly recommended.

This exhibition is located in a beautiful building. The lady at the reception "warned" me ight away, that this exhibtion is only one floor. The pieces found their are interesting, but nevertheless I would have expected a bigger exhibition. Even though it is stated that these objects are the créme de la créme of Icelandic design, I can't believe that this is it. Also, I was wondering if there is so few recent design to be shown. Most objects date back to the 80s or 60s. I personally believe that this exhibition has more potential, but if you are around, it is not to be missed.

This Museum is about 10 minutes by car from Reykjavik city center. There is a big parking lot in front of the building. The collection is not very big, but they have a some really nice examples of genuine icelandic modern design. Creative and inspirational stuff, I really liked it. The staff is very friendly and open minded. The museum shop has also some unique icelandic design objects for sale, but they are very expensive, like almost everything else in Iceland. I can recommend this museum to anyone interested in contemporary design.

my main reason for being in iceland was to try to get a sense of modern icelandic design. in reykjavik itself, there's very little sign of any distinctly icelandic design aesthetic. so an important destination was the museum of design and applied art.
first of all, you have to take a fairly long ride on a city bus and then walk a bit. very important to have a good map. the front desk at my hotel helped a great deal with getting me there and back on public transportation (it would be an extremely expensive taxi ride).
it's housed in a large building, but you enter their large gift shop, then go up to the second floor for the museum, which turns out to be shockingly small, with very little of particular interest to see. there are a few chairs in the vein of danish mid-century modern, but not as interesting. and the whole exhibition space is perhaps 2,500 square feet. a tiny museum, in other words, which seems to prove the lack of a peculiarly icelandic modern design aesthetic.
the whole trip took me about 2.5+ hours for about 20 minutes or so in the museum.
