‪Kouvara is the largest mountain on Andros with an altitude of about 990m. It’s summit has stunning views out across the Aegean Sea. Climbing the mountain is not particularly difficult from a starting point near to Vourkoti. You can find the starting point by driving from Chora to Vourkoti, or come from Remata to Vourkoti. Aim for the highest point of the road before it snakes down to Vourkoti (where the road off to Achla beach begins).

You then ascend the ridge over a four mile route which in the last few years has had a dirt road ploughed in to it to allow for archeological digs at the summit. You can reach the summit without needing any real equipment or skills.

The route to the start point through Remata and Arni takes you through some stunning lush green valleys making for a nice drive. At the valley bottom in Remata its worth getting out to paddle in the stream which runs all year round.

I have climbed this mountain about 5 times and I have yet to see a fellow walker. The first 1.5miles from the road are the toughest with about 639ft of uphill.

Once you reach the end of the road, you will find an ancient ruin of a church. The view down to Palaiopolis and out to sea is stunning. Well worth the hike! In the summer months, make sure you bring enough water.‬

‪Andros si distingue dalle altre idole cicladiche perché offre ben 176 km di sentieri e varie opzioni per non stare sempre e solo al mare. Interessante! ‬
