This is a hidden gem right in the centre of Rochester.
Historic House and gardens with tea room - with home baked cakes .
The house is full of interesting features with helpful and friendly guides in every room to explain the history and artefacts .
The house is a private home and open 2 days per week from May - September.
I recommend their website or Instagram for opening times before visiting.

For literature/Dickens lovers, this reputedly is the house that inspired the ghostly mansion of Miss Havisham, the jilted bride of "Great Expectations." Impressive indeed, but the interior and the gardens are only open to the public in the summer months, since the house is inhabited by a real couple - not just ghosts!

Having lived in the area for many years, this is the first time I had visited . What a treat. The house itself is fascinating. Very well presented with knowledgeable volunteers on hand to give you a history of the house and it’s contents. The garden is a pure joy and so unexpected. There is no hint of the delights to be found when you see the house from the road. Given its city centre location you expect perhaps a courtyard. Instead the gardens are extensive with fountains and water features, many unusual plants and all beautifully tended. The house also has a cosy tea room. I’m so happy to find the delights of this historic location.

We were recommended to go here and were not disappointed. Wonderful gardens and a gem of a house, like an antique shop!

This is an amazing place filled with history and historical items. It’s only open a few times a year as it is still inhabited by the owners of the property. For this reason inside the house it is prohibited to take pictures and at the entrance visitors are required to put their bags and phones/cameras in secure lockers. Once you finished visiting the house you can take your belongings and admire the beautiful gardens and take as many pictures as you like. The volunteers inside each room of the house are very knowledgeable and always happy to help. All the rooms are decorated according to the period the house belongs to and everything is refurbished and preserved to mirror the houses historical past. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained and there’s even a cafe that serves cakes tea and coffee in the gardens. It’s a magnificent place that takes you back to the past

If you do nothing else in Rochester go here!
The enthusiasm of the people who work and volunteer here is absolutely awesome.
Every room has an enthusiast in it, not like a guide or a a national trust official, these people really care and it is wonderful. Their knowledge with regard to the building’s history and story is wide and really well researched. The house is full of treasures
.
The garden is beautifully maintained and unbelievably, it covers over 2 acres in the middle of a busy town! It is split up into different sections, some tranquil and restful and others, in particular, the Renaissance water garden which is slightly more dynamic. There are 2 full time gardeners, a man and a lady responsible for maintaining the beautiful beds and lawns and some dedicated volunteers who do a fabulous job . I loved that there were lots of places to sit and reflect on the plants and peace in the garden. We had a lovely sunny day which I am sure helped us appreciate all the work put in. Don’t miss this hidden gem!

Spent 2.5 hours here , a lovely home still lived in, the furnishings are 16th to 17th century all bought in by the current owners as the house was bought as a shell only and is being restored by them. A good history with knowledgeable custodians in the rooms to inform and guide you. Beautiful gardens and quite extensive well set out, fountains hedges and flowers. Well worth a visit.

Firstly I would like to thank Robert Tucker and Jonathan Wilmott rescuing this outstanding house and for restoring with such care. not only the house but also the gardens.
We were warmly greeted by a charming lady, who advised us to visit the gardens first as a larger party were going to have a tour at 11.So, we enjoyed the gardens quirkiness, something to see around every hedge.
The house is unique and filled with so many gorgeous items, you need more than one visit to fully appreciate what there is to see.
The volunteers who tell you the history from room to room, with such enthusiasm they are a joy to listen to.
Thank you for sharing your home.

I live locally, love Rochester and adore history so a visit to Restoration House was a must. I was completely bowled over by the House, the Gardens, the voluntary custodians and by the owners. Restoration House is open Thursday and Friday from May to September and the admission fee was £9.50.
The House is formed from an amalgamation of buildings and those rooms you can access are stunning. The custodians are keen to engage with you and to tell you the stories of the rooms, the previous owners (including Rod Hull), the work undertaken to present them in close to original condition and the newly acquired contents which decorate them. The custodians are knowledgeable, friendly and clearly love what they are doing.
The Gardens are truly amazing. I must have walked past the boundary walls 100's of times with no clue of what was inside. I won't spoil the surprises that you'll see for yourself when you visit.
A local charity offers a small selection of cakes, sandwiches, hot drinks etc from a window to the garden and there are chairs and tables scattered around the gardens.
I want to pay tribute to the current owners (Messrs Tucker and Wilmot). This is their private residence and 2 days a week they open it up so we can enjoy it. They have spent years, and probably hundreds of thousands of pounds, to restore, refresh, rebuild, furnish and fight legal battles to preserve this gem for the future. Thank you, as without them Restoration House and Gardens could have been lost forever.

The gardens are magnificent - so many nooks and crannies to explore and surprises round every corner. Chairs dotted about the gardens to enable you to sit and enjoy each new view.
The house is beautiful and the guides are keen to share their enjoyment of it with you. A fascinating house with a rich and surprising history.
Well worth visiting.

Well there are city car parks - and all within walking distance I think. We parked up and just walked everywhere but really wasn't tracking how far from the car were were going.
