The castle is quite impressive as you approach it from the exterior. Once inside the grounds, you can see there isn't as much of the original castle remaining. The keep in the center is more intact and is the part open to guided tours. It is worth taking the tour to learn more of the history of the whole castle and what was happening in this part of Ireland at that time. Pretty amazing to think that the buildings you are walking around date from the 1100's!

This was an incredibly interesting historic site. Braveheart fans will enjoy seeing the filming location for many scenes. Susan, our tour guide was knowledgeable, entertaining, warm, and energetic!

Though I do appreciate its historic significance, it is just a jumble of ruins that you can walk through, read the placards, and be done in an hour. Well placed in popular downtown Trim, it was nice to get out and walk around town. If this is the best preserved castle in Ireland, what do I have to look forward to?

We visited on Sunday 16th April. A magnificent Castle preserved without any extra enhancement. Lovely surroundings with pleasant walks around the castle and along the river Boyne.
Access to the grounds is free and there is a €5 charge for a guided tour of the interior of the castle which lasts about 45 minutes. We took the option of a guided tour which was very informative and I would thoroughly recommend that. Our guide, Margaret, was very knowledgeable and could really paint a word picture of life in and around the Castle. All ideas of romantic Anglo Norman knights, beautiful maidens and happy bucolic peasants were quickly disposed of .
She included everyone in the group,children and adults.
Inside the castle would be very challenging for anyone with limited mobility because there are a lot of winding staircases, made as Margaret explained, to restrict access to the interior. There are plenty of notice boards in the castle grounds which give great information on the castle complex and surrounding buildings.
Well worth a visit but give yourself plenty of time particularly if you have an interest in history.

Excellent tour with well informed guide. Great value for money. Fantastic view from top of Trim Castle. Would recommend.

It takes approx. an hour or so overall within the castle and keep, which included the guided tour. One can wander about the outer grounds free of charge. The tour was priced at €5 which is not bad considering all the work it takes to maintain the castle and grounds.
I got more of a workout than I anticipated, in climbing up the spiral narrow stone steps from floor to floor. Though there was a thick rope, as a banister of sorts, threaded through iron loops in the stone wall, it didn't feel safe to maintain balance, however that is my only downside experience in the day. I got as far as the level under the roof and as it was a wet murky day, I didn't go up the next level to the roof. (maybe a future visit on a sunny day would be better).
Overall, though I'm glad I made the effort. It was interesting and informative and Margaret was a very good and knowledgeable guide.

Tour guide was great! A lot to see on the paid tour which goes into the keep. Grounds are free to walk and there’s several building ruins and placards with information. One of the favorite castles we visited!

We really enjoyed our time at Trim Castle! You have to take the guided tour to go inside and it takes about an hour and is totally worth it! This castle is so well preserved and had 3d models inside the great hall where the tour starts to show the stages of construction! The tour guide was so knowledgeable. The view from the top was amazing and you can see several of other historic structures/ruins from there. Trim was the only castle we toured that still had the curtain wall intact so it gave a better perspective for the scale of what it once was. Fun Fact there were a few movies filmed there including parts of Braveheart! This was the perfect ending to our vacation and I would 100% recommend it!

Really need to up their game when it comes to communication. The website says "November - early February" weekends only and "early February - 16 March" open daily. I'm not sure what the OPW's definition of "early February" is, but I wanted to visit on 9th and 10th February and I found out upon arrival that it was closed. A pre-arrival email went unanswered and no one answered the phone (a good old fashioned answering machine with current information on when the castle is actually open would be a nice feature). The castle from the outside looks impressive and there are some interesting medieval era sights worth seeing around the town, but overall Trim doesn't seem interested in out-of-season tourism.

Is that the same as the Heritage Pass? Can you just walk around the outside castle and take pictures. It sadly won't be open when we will be driving by.

The OPW Heritage Card gets you in free. You can do a guided tour or have a look around the grounds yourself without going into the castle

Like others have said it is about an hour drive from Dublin airport, that is if you have experience driving on the wrong side of the road, add about another 30 minutes for safety. Also get yourself a sim specifically for Europe before you go so you can use Google maps for navigating.

There is a Gaeltacht area not far from there close to Athboy. Ráth Chairn was founded in 1935 when families moved to area from Connemara, it’s grown a lot since then! Enjoy your visit. Slainte!

Bonjour Céline! Es gratis por fuera pero para poder entrar tienes que pagar (si mal no recuerdo) EUR5 por persona (solo cash) y es un tour guiado en inglés (me costó mucho entenderlo porque el guía hablaba muy rápido y tenía un fuerte acento irlandés). Además, si vas con auto tienes que pagar estacionamiento aparte (EUR 3.5 aprox por 2hs). Si no tienes mucho dinero y/o tiempo, puedes verlo x fuera q es muy lindo y pasear x el pueblo. Bon voyage!

I don't see any way to order tickets online. Can you usually get on a tour with no problem as a walk in. We will be at the castle on June 7th.

Hello Martina,
There are two options of visit here at Trim Castle. The castle grounds are self guided. Access to the Keep (the central tower) is by guided tour only. Tours of the Keep are scheduled on a daily basis and run frequently within our opening hours approximately ever 30/45 minutes. Large groups of 15 people or more must pre-book a time slot and these are limited each day. Tickets for individuals or groups fewer than 15 can not be booked in advance. They are available every day from the ticket desk at the castle and are issued on a first come first served basis, Places are limited per tour so it is advisable to arrive as early in the day as possible as tours can fill up and delays can occur.
