Called during a long canal walk. Couldn’t see any way to get to the cafe with our dog so took him very quickly through the ground floor and straight outside at the cafe. The world’s most officious museum guide informed us that we couldn’t take the dog through and would have to walk all the way round the building to a small gate (almost hidden) to get to the cafe. Very unwelcoming.

Recommended by friends. We took our young grandchildren and it didn't disappoint. Free parking; free entry. Two floors of fascinating exhibits in an old warehouse in a lovely canal side location. The early 20th century industrial and social history of the area was represented in a really interesting and informative manner. The children enjoyed the recreations of the old shops, school and houses etc complete with life like manikins. BUT....my word it took some finding! The satnav didn't land us and the signage as we neared the place was very poor. PUT SOME CLEARER SIGN POSTS UP TAMESIDE COUNCIL!

What a brilliant museum, loads of information about Ashton and it's people from days gone by,it also incorporates a small part of the Manchester museum, and the best part about the museum is that it is free to visit,i can certainly recommend a visit to this museum for anyone interested in local history.

Discovered this museum experience by chance. Thoroughly enjoyed looking round the different floors and seeing the different nostalgic rooms. There is so much to see and interact with. Our 2 teenage boys found it really interesting. The cafe was another surprise and the carrot cake was the best we have eaten. Also great to have a walk round the canal paths at the back of the museum. We will definitely be back now we have discovered this hidden gem. Well done to all involved.

What is the Portland Basin Museum?
The Portland Basin Museum is a social and industrial Museum that is located in Ashton Under-Lyne. It is housed in a beautiful nineteenth century Ashton Canal Warehouse.
It has two floors full of interesting stories on how it was like to live in Ashton Under-Lyne in the 1920s. You will also find and explore printing machines, clogs, boats, trains and a little farm section. It is fun and interactive for anyone no matter what your age is.
The 1920s Street
Walking down the 1920s street at The Portland Basin Museum was brilliant. It made me feel as if I was actually there witnessing how it was back then living during those times.
The old house was beautiful with lots of lovely furniture and a great fireplace. It highlighted how old houses were small in which big families lived in crammed conditions. There is also a piano in the living room too.
The school looked real with a desk and shelves piled with books. There is a bell there too to add real effect. The education system in Tameside was about teaching pupils the 3 R’s. Also later on there was part time attendance where students would only attend 2 hours a day.
The Fish and Chip Shop was great. There was a till that looked real with a person to make it look like they were selling Fish and Chips. Cool. It was one of the common meals for people to eat in the old times. If people were poor then they could only afford little pieces of Potato.
Other highlights were the grocery store which included real life items that people bought such as the weighing scales and gravy.
The Church was well designed with lovely furniture and a piano. There is also a GP surgery and a Pub to a name a few too. It was also a nice touch to look at some historical objects from Egypt and Greece too.
It was interesting, interactive, and engaging. It was brilliant in making every aspect looking so real when it is not. Great.
The other Gallery focused on the history of the Printing machine and Clogs which are shoes that were worn by Mill workers and dancers too. There were some on display to look at. There were some ticket machines and a little area with boats and trains. This covered the history of Transport.
Entry
Entry is free at the Portland Basin Museum.
Facilities
There is a café that is independent that serves a range of sandwiches, cakes, hot and cold drinks. There are also picnic benches that you can sit on and relax during your visit.
There are also toilets too.
Lighting and Access
The lighting at the Museum was great and the objects were easily visible. In relation to accessing the Museum it is open plan and there is a little step to enter the building. There are lifts and stairs to access both floors of the building.
Parking
The Portland Basin Museum has it own car park which is on a cobbled surface. There are also a small number of disabled bays for Blue Badge holders too.
If you love finding out about the history of Ashton Under-Lyne in a fun and engaging way then The Portland Basin Museum is for you.

An excellent museum highlighting the industrial and social history, and development of Ashton under Lyme. Tucked away at a quiet junction of the canals in the area.
Two floors of diverse displays and exhibitions including a walk-in school room, pawnbrokers and pub.
There is a small cafe downstairs, with outside seating by the canal, lift access is available. It does get quite busy at times so you may have a short wait depending on when you go
The staff in the museum are extremely helpful, pleasant and friendly, as well as being informative.

We visited this place yesterday with some friends from Sunderland. We spent a couple of hours looking around. It's so interesting . The 1920s street is amazing and nostalgic even though we weren't born until the 50s. The man on the desk (ex army and from a family of ex army people) was really friendly and welcoming and certainly told us a lot about the Manchester Regiment. I really recommend a visit here. Well done to everyone.

Cobbles in car park, but once inside, lifts and good access for all exhibits.
Again cobbles on the quayside, but if on a cushion should be ok!! Good two or three hours out.
Hope this helps.
