Amazing heritage centre displaying the history of a wonderful train station. It really is a diamond that should be preserved. I think everyone should make a donation to keep this going, as it is a great little museum, which if you visit, you will find out.

This place would be heaving were it not for the car parking. Given over to a greedy private company by the rail company. We won’t go back which is shame as the heritage centre deserves to be very successful

Great museum, packed with information for train and film fans (and a mini cinema showing Brief Encounter). The volunteers were so kind and helpful, in particular to our children (who love trains). We also took a little train trip down to Lancaster using the cheap off-peak tickets. Great to also hear that the Heritage Centre has been saved from closure.

Don’t bother unless you have a mobile phone with you. We didn’t Cash or plastic cannot be used to pay for parking. So these potential customers from Wyoming USA had no option but to go away.

Good experience until you return to the car park and find a £50 fine from the railway company on your car. It’s a trap. No ticket machine, but a small notice high up a lamppost, saying you should go online, download an app and pay £4 for 24 hours parking. A total con.

One of my all time favourite films Brief Encounter so when I heard about this gem of a place I just had to visit. Parking at the station was easy and straightforward. Cannot pay by cash but you can by card through Ring Go either by phone or app/online, was very easy. We couldn't find access to the Brief Encounter Heritage Centre at first but soon saw the directional arrow and into the small underpass we found it. We had lunch in the Refreshment Bar before visiting the museum. It was very nostalgic and both staff and food were good. The highlight though was the exhibition and museum. Before you reach the museum where it is a £2.50 entrance fee , cash only, there are a few rooms which are free to visit showing a lot of historical memorabilia of the railways, Carnforth Station, the 1940s and WW2. There is also a lovely little shop to purchase Brief Encounter memorabilia. Now to the museum. Wow I just loved it and so much to see. Don't forget to put on the hat and coat for a photo of the scene where Laura is on the train at the carriage door and Alec is on the platform. There is a tiny cinema with original red velvet seats that shows the film. There is memorabilia everywhere and I really found the David Lean room very informative and interesting, learnt so much about all the films he directed. How could I have not known he directed Dr Zhivago, A Passage to India to name a few. If you love Brief Encounter this place is magical but even if you don't you can still enjoy, my husband was very pleasantly surprised how much he enjoyed it and even better the Refreshment Bar was licenced.

We were looking forward to seeing Carnforth Station. We tend to agree (to a point) with ‘Emma H’ last year. Parking outside is not easy unless you have a mobile phone and took ages to pay. The outside of the station looks tired and really does need a lick of paint and clean up (not quite as it looks in the picture opposite)
The approach is in need of a tidy up too with weeds and looks scruffy along the line before heading down the tunnel to the main platform.
So disappointing the clock is still missing and have just been reading the reasons why, which again, if true, is sad.
Once on the platform apart from a few stacked old suitcases and posters it could look so much more authentic of the time associated with ‘Brief Encounter’. A leaf out of Pickering Station maybe, which I’ve just been watching on T.V.
The gentleman volunteer was very friendly at the museum and wanted to engage with us and we paid £2.50 each to enter. Again, whilst of interest the layout could be improved. The mini cinema showing the iconic film was charming and agree with another review that the film and info about David Lean was the better area. Lots of lovely nostalgia in different rooms.
We appreciate somewhere like this relies on volunteers but both shops were unattended. Our meet and greet gentleman apologised and said someone would be along shortly but they didn’t show.
The cafe was in use by visitors but we didn’t stay. At least the old till brought back memories of the film. Nice that it was dog friendly. Overall so much more could be done at Carnforth without losing its authenticity. Hopefully the Trustees can look at this little gem they are responsible for through fresh eyes and see more potential.

Visited after lunch at next door cafe, cost £2.50 entry, cash preferred, lots about Brief Encounter but found the room dedicated to David Lean more interesting.
Would recommend if in the area.

Love this place. Brief Encounter is my all time favourite film and so visiting the station was a must! Disappointed to see that the clock had been taken away for repair, but hopefully will return soon. Lovely experience, great exhibition and lovely gift shops. We had booked afternoon tea in the bistro and it was amazing. We were seated in what was originally the Station Master's office. We had a lovely large leather chair each, so comfortable and the afternoon tea was exceptional. There was a small cup of soup, which was delicious, a bowl of small sausages in a honey and mustard sauce which were so very tasty and a fabulous assortment of sandwiches and cakes. The tea and coffee were also very nice. This was easily the best afternoon tea I have ever experienced and there have been a few. The price was also very reasonable and on a par with others. Where we were sat in the Station Master's office there is a beautiful fire place and apparently Celia Johnson would sit there chatting during filming. Very nostalgic experience.

Amazing to go and have a look round all the old railway artefacts. The mini museum can keep you busy for a surprising amount of time and then if you like you can have food/drinks in the lovely cafe nextdoor.

I live fairly locally and have passed it many times by rail through the hundreds of old trains and decaying carriages stored there. Are they part of the museum - and are you allowed to get a close look at them - I would be very interested

Both are separate, but I'd check their website for details, and also agree with previous post about how the staff are really friendly and knowledgeable.

How long should I allow to enjoy the facilities? I am planning a visit with a party of 14 to visit the Heritage Centre early to mid afternoon on a Saturday in September 2017. Thank you.

The visitor centre does not need that long. An hour to hour and a half would be all you need plus any time for the cafe.
