PROS
* Good hiking trail with some shady portions
* Epic views of snow covered mountains of Swiss Alps
* Easy access via cable car from Bellevue and gondola at Prarion
* Less crowded than other places
CONS
* Access from Bellevue is through a forest grove and is not super well marked nor evident
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... as part of my successful quest to use every gondola, cable car and chairlift in the Chamonix Valley.
I started hiking in the shaded forest portion, but then it rained, so I returned to the Bellevue tram station and did not continue. I did, though, visit the abandoned hotel there- that was boring.
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
It is free with the Mont Blanc Multipass
WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Yes

We did this walk on a very hot and sunny weekday in August. We started off by parking in the Bellevue cable car car park. It was free but the parking was chaotic. We arrived at about 2pm and people had parked all over the place - I’m sure some of the people who had parked early would have found themselves blocked in by some of the later parkers. We almost got stuck just trying to drive around the car park but fortunately managed to find a space somehow. The car park still looked pretty awful when we got back at about 4.30pm and we didn’t see any spaces then.
We already had multipasses so just went up the stairs and showed them to the lady so we could board. There were toilets and places to eat nearby. The Cable cars were every 10-15 minutes.
It wasn’t very busy - by time cable car set off it was about 80% full.
There were toilets and cafes at the top as well. The views were truly beautiful and spectacular, hence the name. We saw many spectacular views on our Chamonix holiday but these might have been some of the best.
We then walked to the top of the Prarion cable car. It didn’t look like too bad a walk but actually it was steeper than it looked. For some of the way you walk along the side of the Mont Blanc tramway so that was interesting to see. It looked like there were stations for the tramway along the way. The trams looked pretty full.
Most of the paths were gravel - first it goes down quite steeply and there are cafes and a hotel down in the lowest part before you start to climb. We had ice creams at the first cafe - it wasn’t entirely clear how to get them. There was an ice cream cabinet but it had a sign on it saying it wasn’t self service. So I went inside to ask - it’s one of the only times when people didn’t seem to understand English so I had to say Glaces rather than ice creams. Then a lady came out and got the ice creams I’d chosen and then I had to go back in again to pay. I paid cash - not sure if they took credit cards.
It was very hot on the climbing up sections of the path. It was really steep. We’ve done lots of steep hikes this holiday but all the others have really been clambering up over rocks on mountain edges which I thought was bad enough so this would surely be better? But somehow walking up a steep gravel path is less interesting than clambering up a dangerous mountain side so it gets a bit samey. The boys were a lot more mount on this walk than on the dangerous clambering walks. The only things which kept them interested were seeing all the monstrous grasshoppers/crickets hopping around on the path and we also saw a monstrous caterpillar which we named the pickle monster as it looked like a gherkin. We also found some blueberries growing on the side of the path which we ate. I don’t think mountain bikes are meant to come down the path we were on but we saw a few.
At the Prarion cable car there were toilets and I think a cafe although we didn’t use it. There was no queue to get down in the cable cars. The car park at the bottom looked a lot nicer than the one we had parked in. We then walked along the pavement back to our car park at the initial cable car.
So the views were amazing and we loved those. The walk itself was far less dangerous than the other ones we’ve done but somehow not as interesting because of it.

Mooie wandeling, mooie uitzichten.

In the Chamonix valley there are more paths named "Grand Balcon Nord". Here we want refer specifically to the Bellevue-Prairion stretch, included within the municipality of Les Houches.
It is a very pleasant path, suitable in beautiful summer days (but a greater number of people probably travels it in the winter months, by skis or not), which constantly keeps a quota of 1800 mts or so; for which it allows sweeping views. And at the same time it doesn't feature great denivellations, nor presents any technical difficulty, so that it's fully suitable for families.
All this is possible because the route links the upper stations of the "Bellevue" and "Prarion" cable cars: then the ascent and descent are mechanized, and for the walker only the almost flat stretch (at most 200 mts of height difference) remains. The path run on the grassy or wooded wide ridge, mostly along the route of the picturesque TMB - Tramway du Mont-Blanc.
The route is rather well marked; officially it lasts 2 hours; but allow more time if you want to walk slowly, or to stop here and there.
Almost the whole route allows scenic views on the Glacier and the Aiguille of Bionnassay (to which the TMB is headed) and / or on the Chamonix valley.
A pleasant stop on the route is the "Col de Voza". This pass was used in the past as path to the valley of Chamonix, since the gorges of the Arve stream were quite unpassable.
A tip for summer walkers: if you intend to have lunch, rely on the resources available at Col de Voza. In fact at Prairion upper cable car station, in mid-July, we didn't find open restaurants.
In my view this path is overall one of the most beautiful (excluding the properly mountaineering trails) within the Chamonix region.
