bygget af 31 bjælker, ankom af sig selv til havnen i Monopoli. Oven på tømmerflåden stod ikonet med Madonna della Madia, som stadigvæk kan ses på hovedalteret i kirken.
Stedet hvor kirken ligger er historisk meget spændende. Under kirken er der flere lag med grave og rester af templer fra forskellige tidsaldre, og det er muligt at komme ned i krypten og se udgravningerne der er foretaget. Desværre var der ikke åbent da jeg besøgte Monopoli.
Den romanske kirke blev nedrevet i 1700-tallet og fra 1742 – 1772 blev den nuværende katedral i barok stilart opført.
Man kan på internettet læse omfattende artikler om kirkens historie og arkitektur og også om myten om tømmerflåden og ikonet.
I Monopoli er der flere spændende kirker, men Cattedrale Maria Santissima della Madia er den vigtigste af dem at besøge.

Bellissima da visitare, nel centro storico di Monopoli, arrivando dal lato mare la visione del campanile tra i vicoli e' spettacolare!!

Appena entrato nel centro storico di Monopoli, mi imbatto in una delle chiese più interessanti della Puglia, la Cattedrale Maria Santissima della Madia.
Si percepisce subito l'abbraccio della grandiosa facciata baroccheggiante e la vasta parete scenografica costruita per contrastare la forza dei venti sulla piazza antistante nonché l'altissimo campanile.
L'interno è meraviglioso, ricco di decorazioni e marmi policromi e di numerosi dipinti.
Proseguendo oltre il transetto, dalle navate laterali si accede tramite due scaloni al "cappellone", fulcro dell'intera costruzione, il cui altare, un trionfo di colori, custodisce la bizantineggiante icona della Madonna della Madia. Estasiante !!!

Do not be fooled by the plain exterior - the inside is cool, peaceful and amazing paintings. make sure you take the steps behind the altar - the views back across the church are superb

Siamo stati a Monopoli, per cena ed abbiamo visitato il centro storico e la la magnifica cattedrale. Bellissima, si resta affascinati.

Work started on this fabulous cathedral in 1107, but through a series of misadventures including lack of roof beams, sieges and the resultant damage, it was rebuilt to its current Baroque style by 1772. The Chapel of Our Lady of Madia is dedicated to the Virgin Mary after the miracle of the Madonna icon appearing in the harbour.
Don’t be fooled by the plain, beige brown exterior because it’s the interior that explodes into life. The rich marbles, ornate paintings, decorated altars, artifacts and sculptures all conspire to take your breath away in an awe-inspiring view. Just plain beautiful, a hidden gem that gleams…

An impressively beautiful cathedral for such a small town in Monopoli, Italy. Work on the cathedral was completed in the late 1770's and considered a minor basilica in 1921.
Very plain architecture on the outside, light colored yellow stone. Doors are quite plain also but once you step inside, it's a very different view.
The cathedral is massive and so colorful, it takes your breath away at first. Multi-colored marble covers the cathedral and the chapels along the side aisles.
There are steps on either side of the altar allowing visitors to walk above and behind the altar giving you a different view of the interior.
I have visited a few times, as the colors and size make it a nice retreat from the hot sun during the day.

Tiene una bonita fachada en una amplia plaza cerrada en tres de sus flancos. El campanario no está en la misma plaza. Es del siglo XVIII. El interior es toda una explosión barroca. Tras el altar mayor se levanta una capilla a la que se accede por sendas escalinatas laterales en la que se venera a la Madonna della Madia, icono bizantino, desde la que hay una vista espectacular de toda la catedral.
