We did the Mangrove fishing tour with Beatriz, a knowledgeable local guide. She was kind and showed us how to fish on the canal. She also let us try paddling the boat. Relaxing expérience on thé water.
Choza Chula provides a translator. Half of the tour cost goes to education of local children.

I wanted to do something other than hang out at the hostel or on the beach during my short stay in El Paredon. I had previously read about La Choza Chula on a number of travel blogs while researching my trip. The fact that it is a NGO that appears to help the community is of importance to me.
I did the mangrove tour. Unfortunately, I was the only person that signed up for the desired date and time; a minimum of two was required. Being comparatively inexpensive, I just paid for two people. The guide, via a translator, was excellent, and answered all of my questions (and I think the translator learned a bit also). And I got to try my hand at fishing.
I am guessing tourism is down due to COVID; but hopefully is increasing. I recommend one of La Choza Chula's activities if you have time in El Paredon.

La China Chula are fantastic. My wife and I booked the turtle tour, cooking class and mangrove tour with fishing. All of which were brilliant and provided a real glimpse in to the life of the locals.
Our guides were knowledgeable and friendly and we had a fantastic time.
They are inexpensive and worth every penny. And you are contributing to a worthy cause. Can’t recommend enough!

We truly loved experiencing this piece of paradise via boat tour and learning about the sea turtles that inhabit this area. We got to see a lot of them up close. Our tour guides were knowledgeable and so friendly and we loved getting to know them. You won’t regret doing this boat tour and learning more about this project.

We were coming to Puerto Quetzal by cruise ship on our Panama Canal Trip. My spouse and I have been to Puerto Quetzal before but it was his aunt & uncles first time. We wanted something different to do besides the typical into Antigua for the day. Something more local. It was hard to find much but we ended up coming across a forum on Tripadvosir about La Choza Chula. La Choza Chula is located about an hour and a bit from the cruise port in a village called El Paredon. This seemed like exactly what we were looking for. I msged with Anniina several times. She was always so quick at respond. No matter what day of the week it was. She’s very knowledgeable. She set up a wonderful day for us with pick up at the cruise port. We wanted to book more activities but she recommended us to only do 2 so we would have extra time to get back to the cruise port. We did have to pay a 50% the amount up front but I believe paypal.
The day of there was a little bit of confusing how the ship took us into a commercial port instead of the normally port with the cute market but the cruise ship did shuttle us over to the other port where we meet Anniina with a driver to picked us up. She had a sign saying La Choza Chula. So she was easy to spot.
Anniina is an absolute gem. She’s is so caring, knowledgeable and passionate about the amazing things La Choza Chula is doing for the community in El Paredon. We really enjoyed spending the day with her, Celia, Adelso, Aura & their son Pedro!
Your first stop was at the La Choza Chula office where they had clean drinking water and restrooms we could use. This is where we met Celia an intern who just arrived a few days before. She did a great job for only being there a few days and this was one of her first few tours. Then we were on our way.
We were there on a Sunday so we got to see the school & library that they have build for the community but classes was not in section. I love that they have a veggie garden at the school and are teaching the kids about growing veggies. They have painted the school & library lovely colors, which really made them, feel inviting and fun for kids. They have also painted beautiful murals on same of the brick walls to make the town so colourful.
We headed down to the Canal de Chiquimulilla in the Sipacate Naranjo National Park where we met Pedro & Adelso who were taking us on a mangrove boat tour and showing us how the locals fish. Boat 1 had my spouses Aunt & uncle, Anniina & Pedro and boat two had my spouse, myself, Celia & Adelso in it. These are not huge boats. But they were a lot of fun and it was such a nice day to be on the water. My spouse doesn’t like boats and was a bit nervous in the beginning but really came around to them by the end and this whole day was the biggest highlight of the whole trip for him! Anywho, back to our day! Our Spanish is horrible so Anniina & Celia translated tons of stories, information, questions for us.
After our boat ride we walked up to the office again for clean water & restrooms and off we were walking the village to Adelso & his wife Aura’s home for a tour of a traditional Guatemala home and have a traditional home made lunch that we could help prepare. On the way we saw the cutest small local pineapples for sale. We did not have any quetzal’s so Anniina offer to pick one up but we only would allow it if she would allow us to pay her back in US funds. Which she did. She is so comminted to making sure you have an increedible experience.
Omg Aura and her whole family was so welcoming and accommodating to all of us plus my food allergies. We had such a great time. I helped make the salad and we all helped make the fresh tortilla & empanadas. I love cooking back home but learned that I am the worst tortilla maker on the planet. But we all laughed and had a good time. Everything had amazing flavour and was cooked on an our door wood stove. They had this beautiful stone that they use with the dough for the tortilla’s that has been passed down for generations. They also had clean drinking water.
We learn so much on how they live and what they eat. It was a wonderful eye open experience. That I would do again in a heart beat.
After our fabulous time with Adelso, Aura & their family. We walked around the village a bit more and headed down to the beach. The streets are all sandy/dirt. Which gets really hot when it 35 degrees Celsius out. I wore sandals, which I would recommend wearing something a bit more how it does pour into the sandals and is very hot.
We went back to the office where we could get clean water, use the restrooms or hang out in the hammocks until our driver can and picked us up (which was about 30mins) to take us back to the cruise port. At the office they also have items you can purchase. The items have a tag on them that gives you a bit of info about the person who made it. They were fair priced and way better then any souvenir you could get from the cruise port. Plus it helped out the community and the maker.
Even with all the translating we knew everyone was having a good time how there was so much laugher going around it was contagious.
I love everything this group is doing for this little community plus introducing them to tourism and showing them that it can be really good. I really hope they can get a vehicle so they don’t have to contract one out to pick up guests. Plus everyone we met that was volunteering for La Choza Chula was incredible to talk too.
At the end of the day back on board the cruise ship we all couldn’t shut up about the amazing day we just had. It was the best day of our whole cruise!

Wow - we are so taken for your review! For a small social enterprise like us, that works closely with the community, we are so proud to have exceeded your expectations and making it a memorable day. We always want every experience to be unique and personal. It was wonderful to spend the time with you and to share the life in rural in Guatemala with you. We will be sure to pass the greeting to Aura, Adelso, Pedro Celia and everyone else involved. All the best to you!

Found this through “the back door” while trying to find fishing excursions while the ship was in port. We were picked up at the port and (not quite) whisked away to El Paradon.... traffic was bad heading out but much better on the return to the ship.
We had two different types of boat rides separated by a delicious meal in one of the local homes. The first one went to see the turtles with a stop to see the salt farm/processing.
After lunch and a short walk, we boarded another boat for a ride through the mangroves where we saw numerous crabs, water birds, and “four eyed fish.”
Towards the end, we tried our hand at fishing. Since it took so long to get away from the port in the morning, we were concerned about the timing so decided to cut the fishing time short. We got back to the port with an hour to spare.
A delightful way to get away from the crowds with two ships in port.

There were only two of us and I am confident they will accommodate you too. Please tell Alex and Raffa hello for me, Bob Holbrook. You will love this experience.
