belonging to an old brahmin family with famous cultural traditions (kathakali), our hosts provided a warm welcome, tasty and various (vegetarian) meals and fascinating insights into their history and rituals.
the accommodation was nice and with a large veranda to sit outside in the evening and relax.
the only thing that could make a little bit uncomfortable was the imagination how to escape the building in case of a fire - very narrow stairs, all windows and the veranda protected by iron bars ...

I visited Olappamanna Manna last November, and returned in February to experience a number of festivals in a nearby town. The host told me each day the best time to be at that day's festival and what to look for. He was right every time. They all involved elephants either as a deity represented on a float or an actual elephant painted and covered with jewels and all part of a parade with music and dancing that went on for hours. I loved it all. There was a meal waiting for me each time I returned to Olappamanna Mana. Everything possible was done for me each day that made my return stay another special time.

Worth the visit, especially in the evenings when religious rituals are conducted. There is a small temple with an interesting origin. Classes are held for children learning to play the Chanda (a type of drum) and sing, that is worth watching. Note the carvings on the wooden beams of the roof.

A truly magical and spiritual experience that enables you to embrace the culture and history of the region.
Memorable accommodation that provides a step back in time, and welcoming family hosts make you feel relaxed and at ease. Exquisite and lovingly prepared home cooked vegetarian meals also.

Olappamanna Mana is a mesmerizing experience for your spirit and soul. Forget about artificial resorts, forget about typical hotel environments or even conventional homestays. What you get here is simply unique: A breathtakingly beautiful, utterly authentic 300 year old Kerala mansion belonging to one of the oldest and most distinguished Brahmin families of Kerala. A family of great scholars and poets! The whole estate is a secluded paradise, with dense groves of coconut palms, banana plantations, spice and vegetable gardens, old water tanks. There is a soothing feeling that time stands still here and that everything is enveloped in peace and tranquility. The buildings are veritable labyrinths with internal courtyards, old libraries with priceless books, doors that would be the envy of any museum, old vintage pieces everywhere. The guest rooms, in one of the buildings, are spotless, refreshingly simple, with a/c and ample hot water. The veranda in front of the rooms is straight out of an old movie and the view of the red tile roofs under the endless palm trees is magical.
Mr. Damodaran, the Brahmin owner, is a wonderful person, full of dignity and charm, always eager to meet any request, as well as a mine of information about Kerala life and culture. His wife is a delightful lady who welcomed us in her beautiful home - in glorious seclusion some distance from the guest house- and cooked for us superb vegetarian food. She is actually quite famous all over Kerala for her food and even appears on TV cooking shows.
However the absolute highlight of our experience was the opportunity to witness some fantastic rituals and performances organized by Mr. Damodaran especially for us. These are religious and cultural events that have nothing to do with tourist spectacles. They are quite simply the real thing! The first was Kallam Ezhuti Pattu, a rare Hindu ritual to Goddess Kali, where an intricate image of the goddess is drawn on the ground using colored powder with breathtaking precision and then a Brahmin conducts a sacred ceremony. It left us speechless! The other was the most amazing Kathakali performance I have ever witnessed -and I have seen quite a few. It was simply touching and we felt humbled by such perfection.
Overall, what I can say is that in an age when India is changing at a furious pace, staying at Olappamanna provides a precious opportunity to get in touch with the timeless spirituality, nobility and grace of an immensely rich ancient civilization. Mr. Damodaran and his wife are the living embodiment of all that. Ollappamanna is by no means just a place to stay. It is a total experience, a destination in itself.

It was the greatest homestay while traveling in India. Best food ever, nice hosts, wonderful place. The area has lots of fruits, ricefields and wild peacocks. It's pure natural. We had a big bedroom and a small sweet bathroom. Book this homestay If you wanna see the real indian life.

This is not a place for tourists.
This is not a place for fun.
This is not a place for indulgence in the artificiality of life.
BUT...
This is a place for your mind and your body to relax and rejuvenate in the surroundings of a yet to be "polluted to the hilt" village and its centuries old traditions and culture.
This is a place where you get the warmth of non-commercial human relations.
This is a place where even staying indoors make you introspect about life.
We stayed at the mana and visited parts of Vellinezhi for just 1 day, but the experience and the warmth of all the people we met will stay with us and force us to visit them in future.
What you get to experience - staying in a premise with centuries old traditions and art forms, the caring and warmth of all the people of mana (Mr & Mrs damodaran, Mrs Damodaran's mother and their assistant), true kerala vegetarian food (how many people from outside kerala know about that!) move around the village to visit various places of interest for Kathakali, visit nearby places for less crowded beautiful traditional Kerala style temples, unpolluted Kunthi river from Silent Valley, procure traditional dress materials from local handloom industry shops, etc.
For a truly satisfactory experience plan for atleast 3 days in and around Vellinezhi!

Good evening
Could a family visit this place without staying there? If yes which would be the best time to visit?
Thank you
