This is a beautiful stone cottage, left as it would have been 150 years ago. Thomas Carlyle was born here. I knew something of him before I visited the birthplace, but I learned so much more. There are so many personal items here that you feel acquainted with the Carlyles and you get an understanding of how huge a public intellectual Thomas Carlyle was. David H. brought it all to life - what a brilliant and passionate guide. One of the best visits I have ever made to a historic site.

This house museum was the birthplace of Thomas Carlyle in 1795. It’s an unassuming building, unsurprisingly since Caryle’s father was a humble farmer and stonemason. There are three rooms. Downstairs is the kitchen, with items belonging to the Carlyle family on display as well as common kitchen items of the 18th century.
There are two rooms upstairs. A bedroom typical of the 18th century i.e. small for a family by modern standards. There are personal items on display that belong to different members of the Carlyle family. The other room is tiny, almost like a narrow loft room and in here many of Carlyle's personal belongings are kept here along with a collection of portraits and photographs, including an unusual gold pencil case gifted by Mary Aitken Carlyle to Thomas. The great Scotsman also lived and worked in his house, and his writing desk, along with reference books are housed in this room.

So glad we visited Ecclefechan today on our way up to Bathgate. We were totally ignorant of who Thomas Carlyle even was but there were lots of information points to read around the village and the guide in Carlyle House was extremely knowledgeable (David H). Thank you so much for all that you do as a volunteer.
I would recommend a visit to both the village and the house to anyone who is interested in history of just as a lovely place to stop and stretch your legs whilst travelling.

My friends and I enjoyed our spontaneous visit to Thomas Carlyle's Birthplace and Mr Peal did a fantastic job of taking us round and brining it all to life. If you are reading this Mr Peal, "marginalia" is a word to use, I was trying to think of the word at the time, but that is what Mr Carlyle did, he has marginalia around some of the pictures, and the books. It is old age settling in for me and I am left wondering if this is another word that Mr Carlyle invented...

This is an amazing place to visit if you like history. The guides were excellent and really knowledgeable. They told us the history of Thomas Carlyle and explained a lot of the items in the house. The guides really made this place come alive.

We were driving past here from Dumfries and decided to view this building. It is a short hop off the motorway and is a charming building situated by a stream, right in the centre of the hamlet of Ecclefechan.
A sign on the window confirmed it was closed due to the Covid crisis. We will call again when it is safe to do so.

Provided a short guided tour and in depth history by the chap on reception at this small historic house.
Did not know a lot about Thomas but learnt a lot.
Plenty of items to see and read about this essayist who had many contemporary colleagues that were even more famous.
Well worth the visit even though there is not much else in the village.

A National Trust Scotland treasure we discovered just over the border. The young man in charge for the day was very friendly, knowledgeable and information. Well worth a visit.
