‪Beautiful short hike a bit over 3 miles. We went in mid-April a few day's after snowfall so it was quite different for this group from Texas. Up was no problem even over the snow/ice but coming down, micro-spikes were very helpful. As with most New Hampshire hiking trails I have done there is a steep grade over good size boulders & roots. Having done the strenuous Mt. Lafayette loop over the summer, this trail was a breeze. Rated intermediate/difficult but I would say that is only for the initial incline, much of the rest of the trail is relatively flat being that it goes around a small lake.‬

‪It was hot and humid which didn't help, but the hike is straight up without switchbacks, with a lot of rocks that seemed to go on forever. I would not take young kids on this hike. The hike around the lake was good, in that they used planks most of the way because it was wet or muddy but I've seen prettier lakes. The "hut" was large and had open restrooms which was a plus. For the effort, we much preferred Bald Mountain. ‬

‪If your looking for a awesome hike then this hike is for you! Not to mention Lonesome Lake at the top, there is also a hut near the lake where you can get food. My only complaint about this hike is that it gets steep and rocky on multiple section. Steady incline to the top until you reach the lake. You can easily get this hike done in 2/5-3 hours, not a long hike at all!‬

‪The lonesome lake is peaceful and beautiful. But 1/4 of the trial(close to the lake) is muddy and icy and makes it difficult for beginners(rarely hike during a year). We are all exhausted when we finally reached the lake and was comforted by the peaceful view: dog and green head duck swimming in the lake with the background of a clear blue sky.
When we reached the parking site at 11:30 am, the parking is full so we parked in a nearby parking area(Cannon Cliff Parking) connected by a bike path and walk to the lonesome lake trial.‬

‪This is one of my favorite short hikes in the area. Lonesome Lake is nestled in the mountains at almost 3000 feet. The lake itself contains brook trout, so it is a good fishing destination during open season for trout ponds. There is also an AMC hut on the pond if you are looking to do an overnight. ‬

‪This isn't a particularly long hike but as with all hikes in this area it has steep tough sections which may involve some scrambling over rocks but the pay offs are always worth it. This hike's payoff is the beautiful little lake sitting nestled at the top of the mountain. We made it up to the lake before rain hit and fortunately the hut/cafe was open which meant we could seek shelter from the elements before beginning our descent. Missed the great views because the weather didn't play ball but a nice hike! Oh and you can do a loop without returning on the path that you came in on - check out the map as there is another path down which is slightly longer and that meets up with the path you come up on - just adds a bit of variety to the hike!‬

‪Hike up to the lake is about 1.8 miles I believe. But note it is all uphill and very rocky. You really need to watch your step going up and coming back down. With that being said, I enjoyed it and was a good workout. Once you get to the small but picturesque lake, there is a level stair that goes around it along with some other spur trails that lead off from there. I'd do this again but only if it was a drier day. The rocky trail is of course more difficult when it's raining out.‬

‪My sister and I hiked did this hike last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. A few things you should know:

1. The parking lot is small and many, like ourselves, ended up on the road. There are signs indicating you should park in a lot, but it seems to be ignored. I have no idea if they ever enforce this.

2. Hike is rated as "moderate", which we (ages 68 and 65) found a bit understated. There is about 1,000 of elevation gain over the almost 2 mile hike, but it is concentrated in bursts which are quite steep. There are some rock stairs and wooden walkways. The footing is good.

3. On a nice weekend, you will have lots of company.

4. Lake is gorgeous!

5. There are other trails of varying lengths and difficulties in the area. The staff at the hut has large laminated maps so you can make a good choice.

6. Food, water, and restrooms as well as overnight accommodations are available at the hut. Lots of nice tables and decks to sit.‬

‪Lonesome Lake is a great destination if you are looking to do a short hike with good reward in the Franconia area of the White Mountains. From the parking lot at Lafayette Campground you look up and see the towering steeps of the Whites on both sides of the road. These are gorgeous and challenging peaks to explore, but sometimes you don't have the time or the stamina to hit those bigger peaks. The hike to Lonesome Lake helps get you into those mountains in a doable manner with good reward.

The first mile of the 1.6 miles up the Lonesome Lake Trail is quite steep and rocky, but very well worn and maintained. After that, it flattens out and a descends a tiny bit to the lake. Some hikers may find the initial climb tiring, but stick with it. Go at your own pace and know that the effort is worth it. Our family (children ages 8, 11) hiked up in 50 minutes, but we are in good hiking shape having hiked 75 miles this seasons!

The lake is a pretty expanse of water that sits on a flat rimmed by the higher peaks on the back side. You get great views of the lake and peaks near and far from different angles. Just below the AMC hut on the shore there are wooden platforms like docks where you can hang out by the lake and even swim. So bring your swimsuit! (you can change at the hut).

The Hut is a gem. It is an amazing place with restrooms, dormitories, a kitchen and dining area, and deck with awesome views. The staff is friendly and you can buy some snacks, use the restrooms, get water, etc. You can reserve rooms and stay there to explore the network of high trails, but that takes pre-planning and reservations, but Day-hikers are welcome to enjoy the cool hut atmosphere.

I suggest finishing the loop around the lake to get back to the Lonesome Lake Trail for the descent back the parking.

Our total experience took about 3 hours including a fair amount of time hanging out at the lake and the hut.

Please note: This is an extremely popular area. The parking fills up quickly and people tend to park along side the driveway and the highway. You do this at your own risk, but everyone was doing it.‬
