Stowe House is not part of the National Trust, so to visit inside the house costs £7.50 each adult. This was our second visit to Stowe gardens, so this time we decided to have a look around the big house. To be honest, its interesting, but not as interesting as I hoped it would be. Sadly much of the house was sold off in 1922/23 to pay off debts so many of the rooms are devoid of furnishings. The ongoing restoration work of the house exterior and internal decor is without doubt excellent. The library is quite something to see, a vast collection, which is used by Stowe School next door.

As a working school, they offer a fairly limited visitor experience even in school holidays - a small basement museum and tours including some of the main rooms. It’s worth knowing that most of the former treasures of the house were sold following a bankruptcy but the trust is painstakingly restoring the main rooms. It’s a work in progress.

John gave our family a fascinating tour of the house, with so many interesting stories, he was a brilliant guide. Would really recommend!!

Beautiful gardens, big car park, nice places too eat. Very dog friendly staff happy to help.buggy for less able

In the three decades I have been visiting the wonderful landscape gardens at Stowe, I had never got around to visiting the interior of the house. I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to do so, during my latest visit.
I chose to view the house by way of a small, guided tour.
The facade of the house, as I was already aware, is grand and striking in the extreme. To my surprise, I was even more impressed by the grandeur of the interior, which contained some of the most stunning design features and works of art I have seen anywhere.
Stowe is opulent throughout - pretty in some parts, exotic in others - but one or two of the rooms are fairly jaw-dropping. The vast and luminous space that is the oval room, for example, is quite literally breath-taking, eliciting audible, spontaneous gasps from several of us on the tour.
The history of the house is also worthy of a gasp or two. Fabulous wealth and power, famous names, scandal, destitution and resurrection all come into play. The tour guide, John, was very well informed and entertaining. I was very glad I had chosen a guided tour for my first visit.
It is also possible to tour the rooms independently, making use of guide books and/or audio guides. I intend to do so on my next visit, when I will also make a more thorough visit to the superb small museum on the entrance level, which is well provided with artefacts and images, brought to life by impressive, interactive multimedia displays.
The entry fee of £9.50 (£7.50 for NT members) seems very modest.

A rare opportunity to visit an amazing house which is operated as a school during term-time. Despite the lack of period furnishings, the guided tour explains the family history and shows some of the most magnificent rooms. The Marble Saloon alone made the visit worthwhile.

Though you only see a few rooms, this was well worth the admission fee, as those rooms and their stories are very special. Our guide, Martin, was entertaining and informative. The only disappointment was that the dining rom was closed for refurbishment. But an excellent add-on to a day out in the National Trust landscape.

We visited using our historic house pass and found Stowe house a beautiful treat as you can see the bare bones of the building.
Stowe is now a private school so we had a guide take us around, he was very knowledgeable and was very passionate about history and the house,
there is a audio visual display which you can visit before and after your tour which told the story of three ups and downs of the owners

Went on the guided tour of this house and really enjoyed the experience. The house is very well worth a visit and the architecture is lovely. Nice to see these historic homes restored and learn about there history.

Very expensive to just walk through dried up fields. There are NO gardens. Then pay to get into the house to see three empty rooms. Total ripoff and I did email them direct to tell them so. Got the standard corportae reply of sorry etc etc. meaningless rubbish. Ive been in many many homes, castles etc over the years and this was by far the worst value for money

Website states enjoy 75o acees for free ? But there is a price list?

Can you just book tickets for the guided tour when you’ve finished your walk through the gardens, I can’t see us being able to pre book on line ( much as I usually like to) as I’m not sure when we will arrive at the house...

From memory we ‘booked’ the guided tour on entry to the facility - i.e. where you either show your NT cards or pay admission - just as you walk up from the car park. I think it is more a case of being told what time the guided tours commence rather than booking and they start outside the house.

I think the same as when school is operational. We only saw about six rooms
If you want to see a grand English house you might be better going to Blenheim it's about 20 miles from Stowe
